1st Period

Colonization of India
India was colonized by the British. The British were abusive towards the Indians. They were colonized for 350 years.

Mohandas K. Gandhi
Freed India from the British. He was assassinated by a religious fanatic. Brought peace to India using non-violent protest. Influenced Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King Jr.

Non-Violent Protest
Fast until DeathGandhi refused to eat until something changed. Followers refused to fight back when attacked. Boycott of British goods (cloth and salt). Protest marches.

Independence
August 15, 1947-India gained its independence. Gandhis actions caused the British to give up and leave. Muslims and Hindus began to fight over who would control India.

India was divided into two parts: India (Hindus), Pakistan (Muslims). Fighting continued until Gandhi did a fast until death.

India was colonized by Great Britain. India was colonized for more than 350 years. The British treated the Indians as second class citizens. British took Indias natural resources.

He was called Mahatma, which means great soul. He was a lawyer who studied in Great Britain. He started non-violent protest. He inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. He was a Hindu

Non-Violent Protest
Fast until Death-Gandhi refused to eat until a change occurred. Refused to fight back when attacked. Protest marches Boycott British goods (cloth and salt).

Independence
August 15, 1947-India gained its independence. Gandhis methods caused the British to leave. Muslims and Hindus began to fight over who would control India. Gandhi fasted until they stopped fighting.

Colonization of India
India was colonized by Great Britain. India was a colony for 350 years. The Indians were treated as second class citizens (based on race). Great Britain was taking Indias natural resources (the good stuff said Marcus)

Mohandas K. Gandhi
Gandhi used nonviolent protest to free India from Great Britain. Gandhi was greatly respected around the world. He was assassinated in 1948. He inspired Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.

Non-Violent Protest
Fast until Death-Gandhi refused to eat until a change was made. Boycott of British goods (salt and cloth) Protest marches Burned passports (in South Africa)

Independence
India became independent August 15, 1947. Fighting broke out between Hindus and Muslims over who would control India. Gandhi fasted until fighting stopped.

Pakistan was created for Muslims who lived in India. Hindus and Muslims were divided because they blamed each other for their problems. Lots of people had to leave their homes.

Great Britain colonized India. They were colonized for 350 years. The British treated the Indians with little respect. The British took Indias natural resources.

Mohandas K. Gandhi
Gandhi helped India gain freedom from the British. Gandhi was assassinated over religious differences. Gandhi used non-violent resistance to change laws and help India. Gandhi was a Hindu. Gandhi went to jail for several years. Gandhi also helped South Africa.

Nonviolent Protest
Gandhi taught to never fight back when attacked. Fast until death-he refused to eat until something changed. Gandhi taught that by not fighting back, it calls on something in the human heart of the attacker. Boycott of British good (cloth and salt)

Independence
India gained independence August 15, 1947. Gandhis protest were the reason Great Britain left India. Hindus and Muslims began fighting over who would control India, which led to the creation of Pakistan.
