A Report on 5th Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture and Other Concurrent Activities

A Report on 7th Thomas Alva Edison Memorial Lecture and Other Concurrent Activities IAS Distinguished Lecturer (DL) Prof. Alfio Consoli, Department of Electrical, Electronic and Systems Engineering, University of Catania, Catania, Italy (accompanied by his wife Ms.Maria Grazia Maccarronello) arrived Delhi in the evening of September 25, 2003 by Indian Airlines flight from Calcutta and was put up in the Main Guest House of IIT Delhi. In Delhi with Prof. Alfio Consoli as main resource person, an IEEE Workshop was conducted on Recent Advances in Power Electronics and Sensorless Control of Drives on September 26-27 as coordinated by Prof. Bhim Singh & Prof. B.P.Singh of EE Dept. of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The workshop had 39 attendees (8 IEEE Members & 31 Non-IEEE Members) from academia, industries and R&D organizations. The inaugural session was held on September 26 at 9 A.M. in the committee room of the EE Dept. of IIT Delhi and Prof. M. Gopal, Chairman of the Dept., inaugurated it. Prof. A. Consoli, who gave useful background information on sensorless operation of AC motor drive, started the first technical session. It was followed by a series of lectures by Dr. K. R. Rajagopal on switched reluctance motor drive, Dr. G. Bhuvaneswari on vector control of induction motor drive, Prof. Bhim Singh on improved power quality AC-DC converters. The workshop for the day ended with laboratory demonstration of state-of-the-art drives employing power converter in sensorless modes. The participants were also exposed to different software packages such as Matlab, PSIM, PSPICE, SPEED, etc., available in the laboratories. The second day started with a two-hour lecture from Prof. A. Consoli, who dwelt upon advanced aspects of sensorless control of drives. This was followed by a lucid lecture by Prof. Bhim Singh on Power Filters and Multipulse Converters, a lecture on analysis of variable frequency operation of three-phase induction motors by Prof. B. P. Singh. The post lunch session started with a lecture on Power Quality problems and its remedies by Prof. C. M. Bhatia. The next session was a lecture by Dr. M. Veerachary on DC--DC converters with photovoltaic application. The workshop ended with a concluding session where feedbacks on various aspects of workshop were taken and topics of concern for future workshop were outlined. The last item of the concluding day, September 27, was the 7th Edition Memorial Lecture by Prof. A. Consoli on Advanced Control Techniques in Electric Motor Drives at 6-15 P.M. It was attended by 15 IEEE Members and 19 non-Members, from academia as well as industries. Abstract of the presentation is given below: The impact that AC Motor Drives are experiencing on several technical applications such as transportation, electrical appliances and consumer, industrial system automation, multi-function motor control, finally gives compensation to the incredible interest and research effort that has been spent in the last thirty years within both the academic and industrial communities. The role of electrical drives is essential in a digital control world where internet-enabled appliances, ultra-precise manufacturing systems, efficient hybrid electric vehicles are expected to be massively introduced in the market. Inherent advantages of adjustable frequency operation of drives could not be fully exploited without adopting a suitable control strategy. The lecture gave an overview of present trends in advanced control techniques employed for torque, speed and position regulation of variable frequency drives. Sensorless and estimation issues were also discussed. Emphasis was placed on describing the evolution of power electronic components directly connected to the realization of advanced motor drive systems to meet the performance required by each class of applications. In particular, the availability of powerful microprocessors was considered that could make the drive able to perform several tasks in industrial automation applications, such as start-up and shut-down sequencing, self-test, fault monitoring and diagnostics. Application of modern control techniques, ranging from adaptive and robust controls to learning control by expert systems, fuzzy logic and neural network approaches were also included, showing how the rapid evolution of technology in various branches could find a natural field of application in modern electrical drives. The event was followed by dinner hosted in honor of the visiting dignitaries and attended by Chapter Executive Committee Members, Section Officers and faculty involved in the Delhi Workshop.
