Introduction to Carleton Academic Student Government

What is CASG?
CASG is the Carleton Academic Student Government and as such sometimes has the
acronym CASG. CASG is given power by the University Senate to elect students in
all departments across campus to their respective departmental boards. Before it's
reform, CASG was the New University Government (NUG).

Where is CASG located?

The CASG office is located across the hall from OPIRG at 325 University Centre. To
get there from Mike's Place; make a right towards Porter Hall and walk down the
hall and turn left. Walk up to level 3, the office will be on your right.

FASS Representatives:
Once you are elected to CASG, you are responsible for attending department and
faculty board meetings (the frequency of meetings depends upon the nature of your
department or faculty and as need arises) as well as CASG general meetings (twice
a semester).

- All Student Representatives are encouraged to take on one and only one major
project each year relating to student issues at Carleton, for instance changing a
problem course within their program, sitting on a University-wide committee or
pushing for other academic reforms.

The Role of a Student Representative:

- You are a leader
- You are representing students
- You are looking out for their best interests
- You are the link between students and faculty

As Students who sit on the Departmental Board:

- You are to provide a student perspective
- You are to aid in finding other possible solutions
- You are "professionals‐in-training"

---

You are expected to attend as many meetings as possible. If for any legitimate
reason you are unable to attend, please forward your regrets to both Faculty
Coordinators (as soon as possible). A total of three absents (with no regrets) is
inexcusable. Therefore, should this be the case, you will no longer serve as a
CASG student representative.

The Meetings are as follows:

1] Student Board Meetings

- Faculty Coordinators organize these meetings where you will bring up any issues
that you've encountered at the faculty/departmental board meetings (that may
affect FASS)
- To summarize the discussions there
- If you are unable to attend, you must send regrets to both of your Faculty
Coordinators.

2] CASG General Assembly Meetings

- Location: Senate Room, 608 RO (Robertson Hall)
- Forward Regrets to both Faculty Coordinators as well as Vice-President Internal:
csg_vpi@carleton.ca

3] Departmental Faculty Board Meetings

- These meetings discuss new initiatives and courses the department will be
offering.
- It's your job to bring your experience as a student to the meeting and give
advice on the topics they discuss.
- Please forward any regrets to your Faculty Coordinators as well as the Chair of
the Department

4] Faculty Board Meetings

- First Year FASS Reps must attend these meetings as they are not required to
attend departmental meetings.
- Forward Regrets to your Faculty Coordinators as well as the Executive Assistant
to the Dean
