Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to document the specification for signage, demarcation,
labelling and colour coding.

Scope
This standard applies to all buildings, fixed plant and pipelines at the RTA Weipa Site. Colour
coding applies to all plant and pipelines, concrete floors in buildings but excludes mobile
equipment, office buildings and the colour coding of electrical switching equipment and
related components. Electrical colour coding requirements are defined in EW3 - Electrical
Enclosures And Other Equipment

Definitions
Critical Switches, Isolators & Valves
Are those components that control the energy source to the equipment. For instance, main
air supply to a workshop, circuit breakers, battery isolator on heavy equipment, emergency
shut off switches.

ACTIONS & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Superintendents shall ensure that:
They contact the Specialist Civil Engineer for information regarding colour codes and
specifications.
All demarcation and equipment colour coding in their area of responsibility complies
with the colours specified in Annex A.
All plant and pipelines are colour coded as per Annex C, this is not mandatory for
ducting, drainage and tailings lines.
Colour coding is not allowed to deteriorate to such an extent that it becomes indistinct.
All demarcation is a minimum of 75mm wide and areas of different colour are
separated by a 75mm yellow line
Keep Clear Zones for electrical distribution boards are a minimum of 800 mm deep
from the front of the board.
All fire hose reels or other fire fighting equipment are painted red and identified with a
relevant sign placed to assist in the location of equipment.
An area 250mm on either side of and 300mm above the extinguisher, extending to
floor level is painted with red and white diagonal lines 75mm wide with the diagonal
running from top left to bottom right at 45.
An area 1000mm x 1000mm on the floor below the extinguisher is painted red with a
yellow border 75mm wide.
In the event that safety footwear is not mandatory, yellow boot prints are painted on
the walkway at 2 metre intervals.
Height changes in areas frequently accessed by pedestrians are marked with black
and yellow stripes 75mm wide at 45 angle.

The leading edge or nosing on stairs is highlighted by painting a 25mm wide yellow
strip on both the horizontal and vertical faces.
The Colour coding reference chart is prominently displayed in their area.
The CLASSIC quarterly inspection colour code sign is prominently displayed.
All critical switches, isolators and valves are clearly labelled with the ON/OFF positions
clearly marked
"NO SMOKING - NO NAKED LIGHTS" signs are posted in areas where gas cylinders
are stored.
NO SMOKIING WITH 4 METRES on buildings and at entranceways
Mandatory signs are clearly displayed where PPE must be worn.
All road signs for vehicle traffic comply with the manual for uniform traffic control
devices - Queensland Transport.
