COURSE DESCRIPTION AND GOALS
This content is for demonstration purposes only and is not reflective of an actual WorldatWork course. This sample course focuses on the compensation area of total rewards. Content includes an overview of the Total Rewards Model, basic quantitative methods, communication, regulatory environments, job analysis and pay structures. By the end of this course you will be able to: Discuss the Total Rewards Model and the role of compensation Define basic statistics commonly used in compensation Discuss effective communication strategies Identify regulations and legislation that impact compensation Perform job analyses Identify base pay programs and merit pay systems Discuss variable pay, including common business strategies and communication Analyze data sources that influence market pricing

PROCEDURES
Course Materials
The Course Book may be downloaded from a link in the Course Materials area in Blackboard. This course is arranged in modules. The course content and related activities will be made available on a weekly basis according to the schedule below. With the exception of the first week, the course materials will be available the Thursday before the listed date. Use this syllabus as a guide to help you plan and prepare for each week. There are two Live Web Sessions that you are asked to attend. At these virtual meetings the facilitator will review the course materials and discussion board topics. The case study will also be discussed. You will have an opportunity to ask questions of the facilitator and your classmates.

Communication/Discussion Boards
Some of the weekly activities include discussion topics. Please keep all responses directly related to the content. If you have other questions or topics you would like to discuss in connection to this course, please reply to the main thread in Discussion Board: General Q & A. This discussion must be accessed in the Course Menu > Discussion Boards.

Week 1 Module 1: Introduction to Total Rewards
Introduces the Total Rewards Model. 1. Discussion Board: Introduce Yourself Please take a few minutes to introduce yourself. Complete the e-learning for Module 1.

Week 2

Module 2: The Role of Compensation


Defines the role of Compensation within the Total Rewards Model. 1. Complete the e-learning for Module 2. 2. Complete Exercise_Role of Compensation.pdf and check your answers (answer sheet provided).

Week 3

Module 3: Statistics
Addresses basis statistics commonly used in compensation. 1. Download Spreadsheet for Statistics.xlsx for reference. 2. Complete the e-learning for Module 3. 3. Use the information from Case Study 1_Part 1.pdf to complete Case Study 1_Part 2.pdf and check your answers (answer sheets provided).

Week 4

Module 4: Laws, Regulations and Requirements


Discusses many of the laws that impact the field of compensation. 1. Complete the e-learning for Module 4. 2. Attend the Live Web Session Thursday at 10:00AM (Pacific). The link to the Live Web Session is in Course Materials>Week 4.

Week 5

Module 5: Job Analysis


Explains fundamentals of how to conduct a job analysis. 1. Complete the e-learning for Module 5. 2. Discussion Board: Job Analysis Which job evaluation methods are currently in use in your organization? Do managers use them effectively? How could they be improved? The link to the discussion board is in Course Materials>Week 5.

Module 6: Base Pay and Merit Pay
