Kabse Hoon Kya Bataon (Ghalib)

A Ghalib classic. A point to be noted is that the ghazal, which was sung by Jagjit in the serial,
was an abbreviated version of this ghazal. Only some shers were taken which have been duly

Baazi-cha-aie-Atfal (Ghalib)

One of Ghalib's classics along with the translation! A point to be noted is that the ghazal which
was sung in the serial by Jagjit was an abbreviated version of this ghazal. Only five shers were
taken which have been duly marked in the same.

1-
Baazi-cha-aie-Atfal Hai Dunia, Mere Aage
Hota Hai Shaboroze Tamasha Mere Aage
[I perceive the world as a playground
Where dawn and dusk appear in eternal rounds]
Ik Khel Hai Aurang-e-suleman, Mere Nazdeek
Ik Baat Hai Ajaaz-a-Maseehah, Mere Aage
[In His Universal form is a plaything the throne of Solomon
The miracles of the Messiah seem so ordinary in my eyes]
Juz Naam, Nahin Surat-a-aalam Mujhe Manzoor
Juz Vaham, Nahin Hasti-e-ashiya, Mere Aage
[Without name I cannot comprehend any form
Illusionary but is the identity of all objects]
2-
Hota Hai Nihan Gard Mein Sahra, Mere Hote
Ghista Hai Jabin Khak Pe Dariya, Mere Aage
[My anguish envelopes the entire desert
Silently flows the river in front of my floods]
3-
Mut Poochh, Ki Kya Haal Hai Mera, Tere Peeche
Tu Dekh Ki Kya Rung Hai Tera, Mere Aage
[Ask not what separation has done to me
Just see your poise when I come in front of you]
Sach Kehte Ho Khudbeen-o-Khuddara Hun, Kyon Na Hun?
Baitha Hai Butt-a-Aaeena-Seema, Mere Aage
[Truly you say that I am egotistical and proud
It is the reflection, O friend, in your limited mirror]
Phir Dekhiye, Andaz-e-Gul-Afshani-e-Guftaar
Rakh De Koyee Paimana-o-Sahba Mere Aage
[To appreciate the style and charm of conversation
Just bring in the goblet and wine]
Nafrat Ka Guman Guzre Hai, Mein Rushk Se Guzra
Kyonkar Kahun, Lo Naam Na Unka Mere Aage
[Hatred manifests due to my envious mind
Thus I say, don't take his name in front of me]
4-
Iman Mujhe Roke Hai, To Khenche Hai Mujhe Kufra
Kaba Mere Peeche Hai, Kalisa Mere Aage
[Faith stops me while temptations attract
Inspite of Kaaba behind and church ahead]
Aashiq Hun, Per Mashook-Farebi Hai Mera Kaam
Majnun Ko Bura Kehti Hai Laila Mere Aage
[I am the Lover, yet notorious is my charm
Thus Laila calls names to Majnu in front of me]
Khush Hote Hain, Pur, Vasl Mein Yon Mur Nahin Jaate
Aayee Shab-a-Hijran Ki Tamanna Mere Aage
["Dies" not one though the union is a delight
In premonition of the separation night]
Hai Moujzan Ik Kulzum-e-Khun, Kaash, Yahi Ho
Aata Hai, Abhi Dekhiye, Kya Kya, Mere Aage
[Alas, this be it, the bloody separation wave
I know not what else is in store ahead of me]
5-
Go Hath Mein Jumbish Nahin, Aankhon Mein To Dum Hai
Rahne Do Abhi Sagar-O-Meena, Mere Aage
[Though the hands don't move, the eyes are alive
Wine and goblet, let them stay in front of me]
Humpesh-O-Hummastrab-O-Humraaz Hai Mera
"Ghalib" to Bura Kyon Kaho, Accha Mere Aage
[Says "Ghalib"
Conscience is companion and trusted friend
Don't pass any judgments in front of me.]
Ishq Mujhko Nahin (Ghalib)

Ishq Mujhko Nahin, Vehshat Hi Sahi

Meri Vehshat Teri Shohrat Hi Sahi
Katta Keeje Na Taalluk Hamse
Kutch Nahin Hai To Adavat Hi Sahi
[(You say) It is not love, it is madness
My madness may be the cause of your fame
Sever not my relationship with you
If nothing then be my enemy]

Mere Hone Mein Hai Kya Rusvayee

Ae Veh Majlis Nahin Khallat Hi Sahi
Hum Bhi Dushman To Nahin Hain Apne
Gair Ko Tujhse Mohabbat Hi Sahi
[What is the meaning of notoriety in meeting me
If not in public court meet me alone
I am not my own enemy
So what if the stranger is in love with you]

Apni Hasti He Se Ho Jo Kutch Ho

Aagahi Gar Nahin Gaflat Hi Sahi
Umr Harchand Ki Hai Barke-Kharam
Dil Ke Khoon Ki Fursat Hi Sahi
[Whatever you are, it is due to your own being
If this not known then it is ignorance
Life though fleets like a lightening flash
Yet it is abundant Time to be in love]

Hum Koyee Tarqe-Vafa Karte Hain

Na Sahi Ishq Museebat Hi Sahi
Kutch To De Ae Falke-Na-Insaaf
Aaho Fariyad Ki Rukhsat Hi Sahi
[I do not want debate on the sustenance of love
Be it not love but another dilemma
Give something O biased One
At least the sanction to cry and plea]

Hum Bhi Tasleem Ki Khoo Dalenge

Benayazi Teri Aadat Hi Sahi
Yaar Se Chedh Chali Jaye 'Asad'
Gar Nahin Vasl To Hasrat Hi Sahi
[I will perpetuate the rituals
Even if cruelty be your habit
Teasing and cajoling the beloved cannot leave 'Asad'
Even if there is no union and only the desire remains]
Zindagi Jab Bhi Teri Bazm

"bazm" = assembly/company (at a feast or entertainment)

Film - Umrao Jaan

Music - Khayyaam, Lyrics - Shahryar, Singer - Talat Aziz

Zindagi jab bhi teri bazm mein laati hai hamen

Ye zamin chand se behatar nazar aati hai hamen

Surkh phulon se mahak uthati hain dil ki rahen

Din dhale yun teri aawaz bulaati hai hamen

Yaad teri kabhi dastak kabhi saragoshi se

Raat ke pichhale prahar roz jagaati hai hamen

Har mulaqat ka anjaam judai kyun hai

Ab to har vaqt yahi baat satati hai hamen
Meri Zindagi Kisi Aur Ki
Meri zindagi kisi aur ki,
Mere naam ka koi aur hai
Mera naqsh hai sar-e-aaina,
Bas aaina koi aur hai….

Mere dhadkano mein hai chaap se,

Ye judaai bhi hai milaap se
Mujhe kya pata mere dil bata,
Mere saath kya koi aur hai….

Na gaye dino ko khabar meri,

Na shareek-e-haal nazar teri
Tere des mein mere bhes mein,
Koi aur tha koi aur hai….

Woh meri taraf nigraan rahe,

Mera dhyan na jaane kahan rahe
Meri aankh mein kai suraatein,
Mujhe chahta koi aur hai….

Meri zindagi kisi aur ki,

Mere naam ka koi aur hai
Mera naqsh hai sar-e-aaina,
Bas aaina koi aur hai…
Koi Yeh Kaise Bataye

Arth: Kaifi Azmi/Kuldip Singh - Jagjit Singh

Koi yeh kaise bataye ke woh tanha kyun hai?

Woh jo apna tha wohi aur kisi ka kyun hai?
Yehi duniya hai to phir aise yeh duniya kyun hai?
Yehi hota hai to akhir yehi hota kyun hai?

Ek zara haath badha de to pakad le daaman

Uske seene mein sama jaye hamare dhadkan
Itni kurbat hai to phir phasla itna kyun hai?

Dil-e-barbaad se nikla nahi ab tak koi

Ek lute ghar pe diya karta hai dastak koi
Aas jo toot gaye phir se bandhata kyun hai?

Tum musarrat ka kaho ya isse gham ka rishta

Kehte hai pyar ka rishta hai janam ka rishta
Hai janam ka jo yeh rishta to badalta kyun hai?
Gulshan Ki Faqat

1. gulshan ki faqat phooloN se nahiN, kaaNToN se bhi zeenat hoti hai

jeene ke liye is duniyaa meiN GHam ki bhi zaroorat hoti hai
[faqat = only; zeenat = beauty/attractiveness]
[The beauty of a garden, is not only because of flowers but also due to thorns
To live in this world, one also needs sorrows (along with happiness)]

2. ae waaiz-e-naadaaN kartaa hai too ek qayaamat kaa charchaa

yahaaN roz nigaaheN milti haiN, yahaaN roz qayaamat hoti hai
[waaiz = preacher; qayaamat = day of judgement; nigaaheN = eyes]
[E preacher, don't talk to me about The Day of Judgement;
Here, everyday our eyes meet, and everyday is A Day of Judgement]

3. woh purshish-e-GHam ko aaye haiN, kuchh keh na sakooN, chup reh na sakooN
KHaamosh rahooN to mushkil hai, keh dooN to shikaayat hoti hai
[purshish-e-GHam = inquiry of sorrow, pay condolences, sympathize]
[She has come to inquire the reasons for my sorrows; I can't say anything, and I
cannot keep quiet either
Keeping quiet will make things difficult, while telling the reasons would only be a
cause for complaints]

4. karnaa hi padegaa zapt-e-alam, peene hi padeNge yeh aaNsoo

faryaad-o-fuGHaaN se ai naadaaN, tauheeN-e-muhabbat hoti hai
[zapt-e-alam = bottle one's emotions, keep sorrow to heart;
faryaad-o-fuGHaaN = crying out aloud and beseeching;
tauheen-e-muhabbat = disgracing the act of love]
[A person has to bottle his/her emotions and drink his/her own tears
By crying out loudly and beseeching attention, hey inncocent, your are only
disgracing love]

5. jo aa ke ruke daaman pe 'Saba' woh ashq nahiN hai paani hai!

jo ashk na chhalke aaNkhoN se us ashk ki qeemat hoti hai
[chhalke = to top the rim and overflow, in this case, the eyes brimming with tears]
[Hey 'Saba', the tears that flow from the eyes and fall onto the lap, are not tears but
plain water
Of priceless value are those tears, which do not flow from the eyes]
