Overview
Purpose

This section describes the procedures required to perform an RF power calibration on a

NodeB.
RF power calibration is not a standard procedure, but can be used when components must
be changed or a new RF path is added to a previously deployed NodeB.

RF power calibration (MCR configurations)

Preliminary information

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Preliminary information
NodeB status

The NodeB must be booted on a valid call processing software load to perform the RF
calibration.
The connection between the NodeB and the RNC must be broken.
Offline mode

Before performing RMT power calibration, the NodeB must be switched into offline
mode. This operation will automatically reboot the NodeB.
RMT setup

Before RMT can be used with the NodeB, the laptop must be configured appropriately.
This includes the IP address and NodeB software loads.
The RMT must be physically connected to the NodeB through an ethernet connection.
RF path maps

The RF path maps are stored on the NodeB backplane memory chip. The initial maps are
populated when the factory calibration is performed.
The record version of the RF path maps must be set to 1.
The digital shelf number and the logical unit number must be set according to the
site-specific conditions.
When a recalibration is performed due to the addition of a new RF path (that is, a new
radio or filter), the path maps must be changed to ensure the new configuration is mapped
correctly.
RF power calibration

The RF power calibration is a semi-autonomous procedure which calculates the gains and
losses through the test path and writes these values to the NodeB backplane memory chip.
These values are then accessed each time the radio is brought into service to ensure the
radios operate at their power levels.
To retrieve the new backplane parameters, you must restart the NodeB application.
However, it is not necessary to restart the RMT.
The RF power calibration procedure applies only to the 9391 Macrocell. It does not apply
to the 9396 d2U/d4U and the distributed NodeB.

RF power calibration (MCR configurations)

Calibrate the RF path

....................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Calibrate the RF path

Before you begin

Ensure that the following prerequisites are met:

Required tools

The power calibration procedure requires the following test equipment:

Power meter, sensor, or attenuator (power range 40 dB and 300 W)

Adaptor cable or connector for N type to DIN connection
Note: Prior to attempting RF path calibration choose an appropriate power meter,
head, attenuator, and test cable such that the combination of these test components
provides the desired calibration accuracy, while protecting the attenuator and power
meter head from thermal damage.

System requirements

The NodeB must be in the offline mode.

The following components must be configured:

BTS Primary RF Path Map and BTS RF Test Path Map must display the new

configuration (after addition of a new RF path, that is, a new radio or new filter).
The power meter used to measure the signal must be calibrated and setup to provide
the correct measurement.
If antenna jumper cables are connected, they must be removed to connect the power
meter.
Important! Alcatel-Lucent recommends that you store the BTS Primary RF Path Map
and the BTS RF Test Path Map, andMCR RF Test Path Maps tab prior to the RF
calibration. For more information, see Save RF path configuration files (p. 3-22).
Important! If, after a calibration, a window appears stating that a value is out of
range, then the calibration is not valid. In this case, do not store the values. The
problem must be identified and the calibration procedure must be re-executed.

Calibrate RF path for Diversity 1

To calibrate an RF path of the NodeB for Diversity 1, perform the following steps:
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Select the Tx ON/OFF switch on the radio's faceplate to the OFF position.
Important! Set the DOWN position = OFF.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Connect the power meter adapter cable (with the 40 dB attenuator) to the appropriate
sector External Antenna Connection (EAC) on the NodeB.

MHz NodeB (p. 3-8) and Figure 3-5, Frequency for 1900 MHz NodeB (p. 3-9) for
determining the specific channel number associated with the assigned carrier frequency
you want to calibrate.
For a 850 MHz band NodeB, use the Figure 3-4, Frequency for 850 MHz NodeB
(p. 3-8) to convert the assigned carrier downlink or transmit frequency to a channel
number.

Set up closed loop RF power verification

Required tools

The power verification procedure requires the following test equipment:

Power meter, sensor, or attenuator (power range 40 dB and 300 W)

Adaptor cable or connector for N type to DIN connection

System requirements

System requirements before performing RF power verification:

The power meter used to measure the signal must be calibrated and setup to provide
the correct measurement.
If antenna jumper cables are connected, they must be removed to connect the power
meter.
The Tx ON/OFF on the radio faceplate for the transmit path that is to be tested is
switched to On.
The CTU must be configured.

Set up closed loop RF power verification

Proceed as follows to set up closed loop RF power verification:

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Switch the Tx ON/OFF switch on the radio's faceplate to the OFF position.
Important! Switch set to the Down position = OFF.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Connect the power meter adapter cable (with the 40 dB attenuator) to the appropriate
sector External Antenna Connection (EAC) on the Node B.
Additional information: The RF attenuator or the antenna has to be connected behind

the power meter in order to have a proper RF termination.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Switch the Tx ON/OFF switch on the radio faceplate back to the ON position.
Important! Switch set to the UP position = ON.
...................................................................................................................................................................................................

Select Test Code Domain.

Switch the NodeB to online mode

Online mode

The purpose of the online mode is to check on the operation of the NodeB while the
system is functional. This is also used during installation and certification of a site. If you
want to monitor the status of the NodeB without performing any tests, the NodeB can be
left in the online mode.
Important! If configuration parameters are changed in online mode, the NodeB must
be rebooted.
Online/Offline control

NOTICE
Service-disruption hazard
If this procedure is not performed correctly, service may be disrupted.
Read and familiarize yourself with this procedure and all of the associated information
before performing this procedure.
The BTS Online/Offline Control dialog allows you to switch the NodeB into online or
offline mode of operation without being attached to the WMS.
Important! Transitioning from Online or Offline results in a reboot of the
NodeB.
Before you begin

Ensure that you have installed the appropriate release of the RMT for the active software
generic of the NodeB.
If the NodeB is already in service, a backup of the NodeB database should be performed
using the OMC-UPS. If you plan to activate a different software generic in offline mode,
the backup is mandatory.
Procedure

Perform the following steps to switch the NodeB to online mode:

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

From the RMT main menu, select Config > Cell > Online/Offline Control.

Possible error causes

The attempt to switch between online/offline mode can fail for the following reasons, and
results in error messages being displayed:

Attempt to communicate with the Node B application software fails.

The entered password is not understood by the Node B application software.

The application software rejects the request.

An existing online/offline transaction is already in progress.

An online/offline transaction is in progress and this transaction is preempted by

another request.
