Official Song Title: The Courage to Believe

Lyrics and Translation Notes (Updated Dec 6th 2014) From the film: Free China: The Courage to Believe Music Video link: www.FreeChinaSong.com Films website: www.FreeChinaMovie.com
Music by Tony Chen, Kean Wong & Michael Perlman Performed by Q'orianka Kilcher Lyrics by Kean Wong & Michael Perlman (Chinese translation by Tony Chen) Executive Producer: Kean Wong Produced by (Publishing Rights): Kean Wong, Tony Chen and Michael Perlman

Objective:
Through this award winning song and film, theres a wonderful opportunity to find well known singers/actors who may be interested in supporting our cause by singing a version of the song in their native language or perhaps a cover version of the song (ie in English) even. Through their fan base, the song could spread to millions of people around the world (especially through the power of social media), thus helping raising awareness about the issues highlighted in the film. The following serves as notes on how to translate the song. Working with famous singers is a relatively complex, time consuming project (will most likely involve legal matters and requires the close cooperation with the publishers of this song) so the initial steps of translating and subtitling the music video in your language can serve as a relatively easy way of spreading the message in your country. Please note: All subtitling/translations need the final approval from the main coordinator of this song - Kean Wong before being released to the public, otherwise unauthorized versions will be asked to be taken down. He can be reached on kean.wong@ntdtv.com Summary of the 4 phase rollout (more details in the document below): Phase 1: Appointment of Free China Song Coordinator - If you are interested in helping or coordinating this project for your language, please email/contact your local Free China coordinator and Kean and send us some background information about your experiences in translating/music/song writer (or the team youve put together). So as to avoid multiple translations its important that we first appoint an appropriate coordinator for a particular language (as opposed to country) based on their experience/expertise etc. Some of you have already taken the initiative to get started, which is great. Phase 2: Translation of song lyrics - please send through to Kean the draft version of the translation and I will coordinate with our team here to provide feedback (if you already have sent through a draft, please read the notes below and make modifications accordingly

before sending another draft for review, if indeed any changes need to be made). As we do have many other projects on the go (getting the film onto TV worldwide and into China which is a priority for 2014), we may take a while getting back to you, so please be patient in this regard and follow up accordingly. At the same time, we understand that the music video is a good way to help spread awareness about the film as well. Phase 3: Subtitling the Music Video with the translation before even finding a potential singer, its a good idea to subtitle the music video. This may be sufficient in terms of helping promote the film/cause even if we dont get a singer for it (as it is not an easy thing to do.) Phase 4: Researching/Finding a Singer to sing the song in your language as mentioned above, this is not easy to do but reaching out to famous singers about the song, regardless of whether they sing it or not is a good way to clarify the truth to them. They may still want to help promote the cause simply by Tweeting/Facebooking the music video with the subtitles! (And you would ask them to do so, in the event they couldnt sing the song etc).

Phase 2 in More Detail: Opening Words in the Music Video that need to be translated:
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere Martin Luther King Jr. Can Music Change Our World? Can a Film Change Our World? Can YOU Change Our World? What if we told you we now have the technology.. to bring freedom to over a billion people. And the time is now

(Please note, theres no need to do the animation of the words as we do in the music video, just subtitle down the bottom of the screen the relevant translation.)

Closing Words in the Music Video that need to be translated also:

Free China (when the final Free China logo appears, have the words Free China translated and subtitled below in the music video) This Year we Spread the Truth And Breakthrough the Great Internet Firewall of China From June 4th www.FreeChinaMovie.com (just keep this website, or if you have bought a domain name that is in your language and is simple to remember and has the same meaning as free china movie then put that in the subtitles. From our main freechinamovie.com website, we will eventually have a drop down menu that will link to the other language websites)

Notes to Lyrics and Translation:

'Come from our ... first breath' Meanscoming from the source of life first breath Chi or qi (life energy/life force of the universe), or like in the beginning there was the 'word' (bible reference) first breath/chi/word of which ...'freedom' is calling you (ultimately we are here to break free of illusion - to become truly free through cultivation/spiritual awakening (which is why we show the buddha in the music video)

Lies turn fear to hate

Referring to how the propaganda (lies) against Falun Gong, all the lies used by the Chinese Communist Party result in fear amongst the peoplewhich also ultimately turns many to hatred against those persecuted.

Silent, feel the pain

We are calling on the listeners to close their eyes, be silent and empathize with those who have and are still suffering the persecution.

Tear drops in the flame

Visually representing how we honor and in commemoration/remembrance of those who have suffered at the Candle Light Vigils we often hold around the world.

Sleepless through the nightWe slave away

Referring to those in slave labor camps slaving away al l night making products like Homer Simpson slippers as depicted in the music video. Please note, we did not always translate the song in a literal sense when converting into Chinese here for We Slave AlwayTony translated this into inner heart/soul locked up/trapped. If the translation works and sings well, then its good to keep to the original meaninghowever if its difficult to find words that sing well (you need to follow the number of syllables/notes/beats for that particular phrase of lyricssee vocal lead sheet below for more understanding of the rhythm/notes.) 'Mother, your shame...hear us' Refers to the following: 1) All mothers who've been shamed by having to have abortions and other shameful things as a result of the Chinese Communist Partys (CCP) rule of Law. 2) All mothers (people) like Jennifer Zeng who were forced to renounce their faith /give up their families/ who were jailed for their beliefs etc 3) China is often referred to as The Motherland so here were also referring to all of China who have been shamed by the CCP in persecuting its own people through the last 60-70 years of rule

4) Mother, your shame also was meant to mean mothering ones shame or wipe away your shame (as a mother would forgive you for your wrong doings) So we're really referring to 'everyone' ...that they should hear us 'hear this call'...of 'Come, stand for truth' Please note, this is a rather tricky thing to translate while keeping to the rhythm of the song. In Chinese for example, we translated Mother Your Shame..hear us as simply Mother, wipe away the tears the first time it appears in the song and the second time as Mother, stop the tears Til the End, we defendTranscend Here for the Chinese, Tony translated it the first time as let the heartbe the nd guardian/protector of freedom and the 2 time it was translated as let the heartalways be free or have freedom 'Transcend' Ideally, if you can find one word that has 2 syllables and sings well (rhymes etc though they dont always need to rhyme of course) then the last word means: transcending mind body spirit through spiritual improvement/cultivation transcending the persecution - peacefully transcending anger/hate (inspite of the persecution etc) etc

We know the Way

Refers to how we know the Way /the path to freedom (through peaceful means, prayer, righteous thoughts etc). Also a play on words about The Dao/Tao which is often translated as The Way spiritual path to enlightenment.

Use of Rhymes
We did use some rhymes in each verse (verse A hate/wait, verse B pain/flame, pre-chorus Believe, Be Free (near rhymes) and Be Free/See, verse C light/unite, Pray/Way, Chorus Till the End/We Defend/Transcend rhymes). If they flow naturally, please use rhymes (dont over use etc). Near rhymes are good also (where the vowels are the same but the final consonant doesnt matter , for example find/time, see/meet, away/save.) For your language, rhymes can also help make the song flow/sing better.

Other General Guidelines for Translations

When translating the lyrics its important you know how the song sings how the notes flow, the syllables used etc. Simply translating the meaning without considering the tune/music will not work well. The key to translating/song writing is simplicity while at the same time incorporating deeper inner meaning.

We had a number of people (3) help translate the lyrics into Chinese, but ultimately Tony Chen (the composer who speaks both Chinese/English and is a good singer as well) came up with the final version. Chinese draft version for your reference (sung by Tony please note we chose a different key to suit his voice). This is just a draft! We are looking to find a suitable Chinese singer (if you have any ideas/suggestions, please send to kean.wong@ntdtv.com ) https://www.dropbox.com/s/zra3gp1pq0e5u6p/FREECHINACHINESE_R.mp3 We suggest that you find a lead translator who ideally has singing/music background and other translators can assist with translation also. If you send an email out to practitioner base, you will probably find some people who have written songs/music backgrounds. Getting the help of professional singers/song writers is also a good way to raise awareness of our cause. This is something to consider. Once you have a draft, please send to kean.wong@ntdtv.com and I will work with Tony/Michael to see how the lyrics flow.

The Songs instrumental track once you have a draft version of the translation, Kean
will send the coordinator the mp4 instrumental track of just the music (with no vocals) so you can further refine the lyrics.

Phase 3: Creating a subtitled version BEFORE finding a good singer

Once we have finalized the draft lyrics, the next step is to subtitle the music video (down the track the singer may want to modify the lyrics a bit which is fine, but its good to have a subtitled version of the original music video to present to them for review when you first approach them.) Heres the link to the high definition version (.MOV) of the music video (Its about 6gb so will take a while to download) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8-CXla7Kn-OVG5pWjFYUm9KMjg/edit?usp=sharing Heres the much smaller but still HD .mp4 version of the music video (only about 100mb which can still be subtitled if you have problems downloading the .MOV file above) https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8-CXla7Kn-OQzJTcG4xT2p6ZzA/edit?usp=sharing Heres the project file that we created with English and Chinese subtitles as reference (you can put your language over the English text etc). Note, this FINAL CUT PRO 7 project file is linked to the .MOV file above. If you dont have final cut, then just subtitle the .MOV or .mp4 files above using whatever software you prefer. Please use the subtitling format/style/rough font sizes we used in the youtube links as reference. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B8-CXla7Kn-OQ0MtR2I4TFVSdW8/edit?usp=sharing

Phase 4: Finding a Good Singer

This is not an easy thing to do! We met up with Qorianka back in Nov 2012 after being referred to her via a few practitioners. We had contacted her in fact a few years back at the beginning of the project but did not hear from her. After we were nominated for Best Soundtrack Album in 2012 at the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, we met with her and after she saw the film, she agreed to sing the song. We wrote up the lyrics in December 2012 and in late January 2012, flew a crew over to Los Angeles where she lives and recorded the song and shot the music video. It took about 4 days in total. (2 days of location shoots, 2 half days of recording in a studio.) By March 2013 we had the music video finished and it was finally approved by the singer as well around April 2013 (Qorianka has a certain percentage royalty stake what is referred as mechanical rights to the English version of the song.) In some sense, Qorianka was an ideal singer she starred in The New World film (as the real life Pocahontas opposite Christian Bale (aka batman) and was relatively famous back when she shot the film. She is also a big champion of human rights and has been all her life. She studied singing since she was very young although she ended up being known for her acting and never ventured into a singing career. She has a very powerful and moving voice so was a natural candidate for this particular song (we saw a youtube video of her singing on the famous Ellen Degeneres show http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5sjOXl3Qng ) . Ideally, to keep things simple, we would find a singer who is willing to sing the song for free (initially we thought Qorianka would sing for free, but as we didnt sign any contracts it become more complicated later when we discovered she did in fact want compensation in the form of a royalty). Of course, like with Qorianka, they may also want some royalty compensation for the version they are singing. This is something that the publishers of the song (Kean, Michael and Tony) can negotiate with the singer/producers of the song. Once again, it is NOT easy to record a single song (and shoot a music video!) it took really weeks of preparation work and dealing with celebrities of any nature can be complex. The post production work is very complex as well (we had to find and pay for the recording and mixing and fine tuning the song takes quite a lot of expertise and time to do well.) Our main priority right now is to focus on creating the Chinese version of the song as working on different versions of the song (in different languages) is very time consuming unless the local team has experience in producing songs. This is something we can discuss with local coordinators on a case by case basis. This is why on a simpler level, we could initially just create the subtitled version of the song and upload it on youtube to spread virally (without needing to find a singer just yet). Research: in summary create a list (in excel) of singers with a heart for human rights (theyve sung for different causes), you can find out their backgrounds on Wikipedia often (or the equivalent), and find out ways you can contact them. Remember, even if they arent likely to sing, they may still help in terms of promoting the subtitled version of the song/the film itself. Before you do reach out to the various singers, please discuss with Kean to see if theyre suitable or not (send samples of their singing and background info etc). In terms of reaching out to them, we will provide sample letters etc you could send to their agent or sometimes its as easy as reaching out to them on facebook etc

We will have more guidance and more questions will arise on this as we ourselves reach out to singers for the Chinese version etc and share more about our experiences. Lastly, please join us on our weekly Saturday sonant calls at 9:30am New York Time to discuss Free China related issues.
