Lyrics and Translation Notes (Updated Dec 6th 2014) From the film: Free China: The Courage to Believe Music Video link: www.FreeChinaSong.com Films website: www.FreeChinaMovie.com
Music by Tony Chen, Kean Wong & Michael Perlman Performed by Q'orianka Kilcher Lyrics by Kean Wong & Michael Perlman (Chinese translation by Tony Chen) Executive Producer: Kean Wong Produced by (Publishing Rights): Kean Wong, Tony Chen and Michael Perlman
Objective:
Through this award winning song and film, theres a wonderful opportunity to find well known singers/actors who may be interested in supporting our cause by singing a version of the song in their native language or perhaps a cover version of the song (ie in English) even. Through their fan base, the song could spread to millions of people around the world (especially through the power of social media), thus helping raising awareness about the issues highlighted in the film. The following serves as notes on how to translate the song. Working with famous singers is a relatively complex, time consuming project (will most likely involve legal matters and requires the close cooperation with the publishers of this song) so the initial steps of translating and subtitling the music video in your language can serve as a relatively easy way of spreading the message in your country. Please note: All subtitling/translations need the final approval from the main coordinator of this song - Kean Wong before being released to the public, otherwise unauthorized versions will be asked to be taken down. He can be reached on kean.wong@ntdtv.com Summary of the 4 phase rollout (more details in the document below): Phase 1: Appointment of Free China Song Coordinator - If you are interested in helping or coordinating this project for your language, please email/contact your local Free China coordinator and Kean and send us some background information about your experiences in translating/music/song writer (or the team youve put together). So as to avoid multiple translations its important that we first appoint an appropriate coordinator for a particular language (as opposed to country) based on their experience/expertise etc. Some of you have already taken the initiative to get started, which is great. Phase 2: Translation of song lyrics - please send through to Kean the draft version of the translation and I will coordinate with our team here to provide feedback (if you already have sent through a draft, please read the notes below and make modifications accordingly
before sending another draft for review, if indeed any changes need to be made). As we do have many other projects on the go (getting the film onto TV worldwide and into China which is a priority for 2014), we may take a while getting back to you, so please be patient in this regard and follow up accordingly. At the same time, we understand that the music video is a good way to help spread awareness about the film as well. Phase 3: Subtitling the Music Video with the translation before even finding a potential singer, its a good idea to subtitle the music video. This may be sufficient in terms of helping promote the film/cause even if we dont get a singer for it (as it is not an easy thing to do.) Phase 4: Researching/Finding a Singer to sing the song in your language as mentioned above, this is not easy to do but reaching out to famous singers about the song, regardless of whether they sing it or not is a good way to clarify the truth to them. They may still want to help promote the cause simply by Tweeting/Facebooking the music video with the subtitles! (And you would ask them to do so, in the event they couldnt sing the song etc).

Phase 2 in More Detail: Opening Words in the Music Video that need to be translated:
Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere Martin Luther King Jr. Can Music Change Our World? Can a Film Change Our World? Can YOU Change Our World? What if we told you we now have the technology.. to bring freedom to over a billion people. And the time is now
(Please note, theres no need to do the animation of the words as we do in the music video, just subtitle down the bottom of the screen the relevant translation.)
Song Lyrics (see Appendix 2 for vocal lead sheet music score etc)
Verse A Come from our first breath Freedom calls your name Darkness lies in wait Lies turn fear to hate Verse B
xin leng shanghen tou Chinese translation for your reference di yi chihu xi zi you huhuan ni hei an kongju zhong huang yan yu henlai xi
Silent, feel the pain Tear drops in the flame Sleepless through the night We slave away Pre-Chorus
lei huo yanzhong liu wu mian dechang ye nei xinbei suo kou na chu yong qi xiang xinzi you
With Courage to Believe, Be Free We will hold on and see Mother, your shame hear us Chorus
rangzhen xiang yi li
Come, stand for Truth For Hope, reclaimed Till the end we defend Transcend (words on screen) Let's Unite For Justice And Freedom Verse C
Step in to the light Its time we now unite Voices rise we pray We know the Way
wo men zhou dao yi qi xin zhong zai qi dao lu yi zai mian qian
Pre-Chorus
na chu yong qi xiang xinzi you
With Courage to Believe, be free We will hold on and see Mother, your shame hear us Chorus
rangzhen xiang yi li
Come, stand for Truth For Hope, reclaimed Till the end, we defend Transcend Chorus
rangzhen xiang yi li
Come, stand for Truth For Hope, reclaimed Till the end, we defend Transcend
4) Mother, your shame also was meant to mean mothering ones shame or wipe away your shame (as a mother would forgive you for your wrong doings) So we're really referring to 'everyone' ...that they should hear us 'hear this call'...of 'Come, stand for truth' Please note, this is a rather tricky thing to translate while keeping to the rhythm of the song. In Chinese for example, we translated Mother Your Shame..hear us as simply Mother, wipe away the tears the first time it appears in the song and the second time as Mother, stop the tears Til the End, we defendTranscend Here for the Chinese, Tony translated it the first time as let the heartbe the nd guardian/protector of freedom and the 2 time it was translated as let the heartalways be free or have freedom 'Transcend' Ideally, if you can find one word that has 2 syllables and sings well (rhymes etc though they dont always need to rhyme of course) then the last word means: transcending mind body spirit through spiritual improvement/cultivation transcending the persecution - peacefully transcending anger/hate (inspite of the persecution etc) etc
Use of Rhymes
We did use some rhymes in each verse (verse A hate/wait, verse B pain/flame, pre-chorus Believe, Be Free (near rhymes) and Be Free/See, verse C light/unite, Pray/Way, Chorus Till the End/We Defend/Transcend rhymes). If they flow naturally, please use rhymes (dont over use etc). Near rhymes are good also (where the vowels are the same but the final consonant doesnt matter , for example find/time, see/meet, away/save.) For your language, rhymes can also help make the song flow/sing better.
We had a number of people (3) help translate the lyrics into Chinese, but ultimately Tony Chen (the composer who speaks both Chinese/English and is a good singer as well) came up with the final version. Chinese draft version for your reference (sung by Tony please note we chose a different key to suit his voice). This is just a draft! We are looking to find a suitable Chinese singer (if you have any ideas/suggestions, please send to kean.wong@ntdtv.com ) https://www.dropbox.com/s/zra3gp1pq0e5u6p/FREECHINACHINESE_R.mp3 We suggest that you find a lead translator who ideally has singing/music background and other translators can assist with translation also. If you send an email out to practitioner base, you will probably find some people who have written songs/music backgrounds. Getting the help of professional singers/song writers is also a good way to raise awareness of our cause. This is something to consider. Once you have a draft, please send to kean.wong@ntdtv.com and I will work with Tony/Michael to see how the lyrics flow.
The Songs instrumental track once you have a draft version of the translation, Kean
will send the coordinator the mp4 instrumental track of just the music (with no vocals) so you can further refine the lyrics.
