BIRLA GOA CAMPUS Second Semester 2013-2014 Tutorial Sheet-1 Course No. MATH F113 Course title: Probability and Statisitcs

Date: Jan 22, 2014 Question 1: Why does it pay the player to bet consistently on seeing 6 at least once in 4 throws of a die , but not seeing a double 6 at least in 24 throws with 2 dice ? Question 2: Suppose in BITS 60% people subscribes Times of India, 20% subscribes Hindu and 10% subscribes both. If a person selected at random, (a) What is the probability that he subscribes at least one of the two news papers ? (b) What is the probability that he subscribes exactly one of the two news paper ? Question 3: The sum of 2 non-negative quantities is equal to 2n. Find the chance that there product is not less than 3/4 times there greatest product. Question 4: A has one share in a lottery in which there is 1 prize and 2 blanks; B has threes shares in lottery in which there are 3 prizes and 6 blanks; Compare the probability of As success to Bs success. Question 5: What is the probability that at least 2 out of n people have the same birthday ? Assume that 365 days in a year and that all days are equally likely. Question 6: If n distict biscuits be distributed among N persons, nd the chance that a particular person receives r(< n) biscuits. Question 7: A ve-gure number is formed by the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 (without repetition). Find the probability that the number formed is divisible by 4. Question 8: A die is loaded in such a manner that for n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 the probability of the face marked n, landing on top when the die is rolled is proportional to n. Find the probability that an odd number will appear on tossing the die. Question 9: If A, B and C are random events in a sample space and if A, B and C are pairwise independent and A is independent of (B C ), then A, B and C are mutually independent. Question 10: A manager has 2 assistants and he bases his decision on information supplied independently by each one of them. The probability that he makes a mistake in his thinking is 0.005. The probability that an assistant gives wrong information is 0.3. Assuming that the mistakes made
1

by the manager are independent of the information given by the assistants, nd the probability that he reaches a wrong decision. Question 11: Two persons throw a pair of dice once each. What is the probability that the outcome of the 2 throws are equal. Question 12: The probability that a dealer will sell at least 20 televisions in a day is 0.45 and the probability that he will sell less than 24 televisions is 0.74. What is the probability that he will sell 20, 21, 22 and 23 televisions during the day ? Question 13: Two urns contain respectively a white and b black and b white and a black balls. A series of drawings is made according to the following rules: (i) Each time only ball is drawn and immediately returned to the same urn it came from. (ii) If the ball drawn is white, the next drawing is made from the rst urn. (iii) If it is black, the next drawing is made from the second urn. (iv)The rst ball drawn comes from the rst urn. What is the probability that nth ball drawn will be white ? Question 14: If P (A) = P (B ) = P (A B ), then show that ) (A B )) = 0. P ((A B Question 15: If A,B and C are any three events such that P (A) = P (B ) = 1 P (C ) = 1 4 , P (A B ) = P (B C ) = 0, P (A C ) = 8 . Find the probability that at least one of the event A,B or C occurs. Question 16: Consider an experiment that has N outcomes, say w1 , w2 , , wN , where it is known that outcome wj +1 is twice as likely as outcome wj , j = 1, 2, , N 1. If Ak = {w1 , w2 , , wk } nd P (Ak ). Question 17: A random box contains tags marked 1, 2, , n. Two tags are chosen at random with replacement. Find the probability that the numbers on the tags will be consecutive integers. Question 18: A sign reads ARKANSAS. Three letters are removed and put back into the three empty space at random. What is the Probability the sign still reads ARKANSAS? Question 19: A speaks truth 3 times out of 4 and B 5 times out of 7. If A and B are 2 independent witnesses in a case and both of them agree in a

statement. What is the probability hat the statement is true? Question 20: Two persons A and B stand in a line with 10 other persons. What is the probability that there 3 persons between A and B? Question 21: Three Machines M1, M2 and M3 produce identical items. Of their respective output 3%, 2% and 2% of items are defective. On a certain day M1 has produced 20% while M2 and M3 produced 40% each of total output respectively. An item selected at random is found defective. What is the probability that the item is from M1 or M3? Question 22: What is the probality that a leap year selected at random will have 53 sundays? ************************************
