Section 2: Verbal Skills

Section 2: Verbal Skills SAMPLE QUESTIONS There will be 3 sections of 25 Minutes each based on following quetions

Directions: Each passage in this section is followed by questions based on its content. After reading a passage, choose the best answer to each question from the five choices marked (A), (B), (C), (D) and (E) in your test book. Then fill in the corresponding circle on your answer sheet. All questions should be answered on the basis of what is stated or implied in the passages. Population size and composition do not, of course, fully reveal a markets economic profile, which is a function of income level and distribution, i.e., effective demand. Large but poor populations may not constitute mass markets for higher-priced products that are oriented toward more affluent consumers. Yet in all large-population countries, even those classed as low-income, the market segment of affluent consumers will be significant as a result of the uneven distribution of income. For example, although India is among the poorest countries in per capita income, 20% of its population earns about 52% of its total income. That makes this segments average income about five times greater than the national average and comparable to averages in middle-income countries. Furthermore, because of Indias huge population, this more affluent segment is a significant market in absolute purchasing power: around $80 billion. Even the top 5% of the economic pyramid probably represent a market of $10 billion to $20 billion. Clearly, the LDCs economic stratification calls for marketing segmentation. Although lower-income segments have very limited individual income, their aggregate numbers also constitute economically sizable market segments for products in their consumer basket. Food expenditures generally dominate their budgets; as incomes rise, absolute expenditures on food increase, although the types change and the share of total expenditures decreases. If a country has a relatively small population, this may lead companies to broaden their product line or to focus on export markets. Taiwans Tatung Company did both. Its chairman, T.S. Lin, explained: With a small domestic market, it is very easy to reach the saturation point. Whenever that happened, we found a new product to develop. Which of the following statements is true (A) (B) (C) (D) LDCs do not constitute a good market because of low incomes Population size can impact the speed with which a firm introduces new products Only the affluent segment provides reasonable opportunities in developing countries As most LDC consumers need basic foods, market segmentation will not prove profitable

(E)

Indias average income is comparable to those of other middle-income countries

The best possible title of the passage is (A) (B) (C) (D) (E) Economic disparities in LDCs The role of population in marketing Marketing in India and Taiwan Purchasing power and product policy Marketing in developing countries
