TODAYS GOSPEL
Matthew 6:31-33

So do not worry and say, What are we to eat?
or What are we to drink? or What are we to wear?
All these things the pagans seek.
Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.
But seek rst the kingdom of God
and his righteousness,
and all these things will be given
you besides.

FR. ADRIANS CORNER

Lent is almost upon us and it seems we just said good-
bye to Christmas! Lent is a wonderful me of possibility
when we have the opportunity to refresh our relaon-
ship with God and come close to Jesus. Lent is a me of
preparaon for Easter when we celebrate the Resurrec-
on of the Lord and bapze our newest sisters and
brothers in the Faith.
We have two retreats in the parish for Lent. The rst
is in English and will be conducted by Abbot Damien
from St. Andrew Benedicne Abbey in Valyermo, CA. Fr.
Damien will preside at Mass and preach on Monday 10,
Tuesday 11 and Wednesday 12 of March in the Parish
Chapel beginning at 7:00 p.m. His reecons will be
short on each night, aording busy parishioners the op-
portunity to parcipate without taking up the enre
evening. I hope that as many as possible will come and
join us for the short three-day retreat on the theme:
The Joy of the Gospel.
The Hispanic retreat will be given this year by Vicente
Leal on the same theme the Holy Fathers leer to the
Church entled, The Joy of the Gospel. The retreat in
Spanish will take place at the Serra Center on March 24,
25 and 26 beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Our parish pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi is full with a
considerable waing list. If you are unsure of the dead-
line for deposits please give Wendy Brophy a call at 858-
756-4174 x1702 or email Wendy at wbro-
phy@ggtravel.com.
Our Mens Prayer and Discernment Group will meet
on Thursday 6
th
of March at 7:00 p.m. at the St. Francis
Room in the Old Mission. We are prey full at the mo-
ment so please contact me directly by email if you are
interested in taking part. (fradrian@sanluisreyparish.org)
The Parish Liturgical Council has goen underway and
is planning for Holy Week and Easter. The members of
the council are Lupe Rios (Director of Worship), Laura
Woodward-Gibson, Fr. Luis, Tavale Tavale, Jenny Flynn,
David Coe and Fr. Adrian.
Parcipants in our RCIA program together with spon-
sors and teachers will meet Bishop Cirilo in San Diego on
Sunday 9 March for the Rite of Sending. Congratulaons
to our soon-to be-sisters and brothers in the Faith. I
would like to say a parcular word of thanks to Mary
Dorso and to her team who run the RCIA program. Not
forgeng Larry LaGrasta, who takes care of the younger
folk and Araceli Gonzalez with her team in the corre-
sponding program for the Hispanic Community. On be-
half of the whole parish I want to thank all our wonderful
teachers, Hispanic and English-speaking for the
tremendous work you do with our children, young peo-
ple and adults, and to the volunteers who support and
assist in so many ways. I include also Monica Duran and
her team who run the Childrens Liturgy of the Word on
Sundays during the 10:00 a.m. Mass. We are blessed in
this parish with such generous people who work in Reli-
gious Educaon at so many levels.
Pope Francis has called for a Synod of Bishops from all
over the world to discuss the Family. In a leer to all
families on the Feast of the Presentaon in early Febru-
ary, the Holy Father shared these thoughts with us:
I am wring this leer to you on the Feast of the
Presentaon of the Lord in the Temple. The evangelist
Luke tells us that the Blessed Mother and Saint Joseph, in
keeping with the Law of Moses, took the Baby Jesus to
the temple to oer him to the Lord, and that an elderly
man and woman, Simeon and Anna, moved by the Holy
Spirit, went to meet them and acknowledged Jesus as
the Messiah (cf. Lk 2:22-38). Simeon took him in his arms
and thanked God that he had nally seen salvaon.
Anna, despite her advanced age, found new vigor and
began to speak to everyone about the Baby. It is a beau-
ful image: two young parents and two elderly people,
brought together by Jesus. He is the one who brings to-
gether and unites generaons! He is the inexhausble
font of that love which overcomes every occasion of self-
absorpon, solitude, and sadness. In your journey as a
family, you share so many beauful moments: meals,
rest, housework, leisure, prayer, trips and pilgrimages,
and mes of mutual support Nevertheless, if there is
no love then there is no joy, and authenc love comes to
us from Jesus. He oers us his word, which illuminates
our path; he gives us the Bread of life which sustains us
on our journey.

May the Lord bless our Parish Family! Have a wonderful
week ahead.
Fr. Adrian.
THANK YOU
To our dear parish family: We would like to express our
hearelt thanks for your generous support in our me of grief.
Though he is dearly missed, Phil le us at peace with the beau-
ful and fullling life he lived and the legacy of family he built
for us. We ask for your connued prayers as you all connue
to be in ours. God Bless, the Borja Family

nuestros nios, jvenes adolescentes y jvenes adultos, y a

da Jess: l nos ofrece su Palabra, que ilumina nuestro camino;

mente.
As we prepare for the Season of Lent,
please keep the following in mind:

LENT FASTING AND ABSTINENCE

Fasng (the eang of one main meal and two smaller meals with no in
between snacks) applies to those between ages 21-59 who are in good
health and would not be hampered in their work by fasng. The only days
that are legislated by church law are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. The
other days of Lent and/or all Fridays are encouraged but not obligated by
law.
Absnence (the exclusion of meat for the enre day) includes anyone
from age 7 and up to any age where the loss of meat for one day would not
be harmful to ones health. The days of full Absnence are Ash Wednesday
and all Fridays during Lent.
Lent is a me for us to voluntarily choose to do penance and morcaon
as an expression of gratude to God for what Christ did for us through His
Own Suering and Death. It is an aempt to respond to the love that He so
willingly gave to us.
