Text book : Reading 2, Agus Riyanto,dkk, Universitas Terbuka 2010 Tutorial module consists of 12 parts but will be cover in 8 classes.

Class 5 : Module 5 Previewing and Predicting. Class 6 : Module 6 Synonym & Antonym, Hyponym and English Affixes. Class 7 : Module 7 & 8 Understanding Written Conversation and Main Ideas and Topic of Paragraphs. Class 8 : Module 9 Previewing, Scanning and Skimming.

MODULE 2 THE GIST PROCEDURE


GIST = Generating Interactions Between Schemata and Text GIST also called as main ideas of paragraphs One approach to summarizing a text Summarizing requires focus on the main ideas of a text and decide what is important without omitting key ideas Main idea can be found in first sentence usually but not always, sometimes it will appear in the middle or even in the last of paragraph Main idea same as topic sentence

The term color blind is a bit misleading because its extremely rare for a person to be unable to see any colors. People who are called color blind can see color

GET THE GIST


Preview the text by looking at headings, subheading, pictures, etc Then read the selection carefully

Highlight the who, what, when, where, why and how on the text
Write a 20 word gist summary using the information you have highlighted

Follow the steps! Scan the page/section Read the paragraph Who or what is the paragraph mostly about? This paragraph is mainly about .. What important pieces of information are linked to the who or what? Put together the answer above and tell the main idea in 10 words or less!

MODULE 3

DETAILED READING FOR EXTRACTING INFORMATION ACCURATELY


Where you read every word, and work to learn from the text In this careful reading, you may find it helpful to skim first, to get a general idea, but then go back to read in detail. Use a dictionary to make sure you understand all the words used

READING FOR DETAILED INFORMATION


Read the detail information of the text carefully Confirm whether the information is present on the text or not Concentrate on the specific word Do not spend too much time on reading the whole text

USEFUL TIPS
Underlining and highlighting Helpful to find information vastly based on the text Use colors to highlight different aspects Note key words Write down key point in the paragraph Questions Read question first before read the text Summaries

Around 35 museums in Yogyakarta are scheduled to join a carnival in the city's most famous street, Jl. Malioboro, on Sunday, in hopes of attracting more future visitors.
