A GOOD SMACK

Purpose: Debate about whether smacking children is appropriate Camera: Use of tripod in interviews (focus, steady camera), use of hand-held camera for panning and tilting shots, hand-held camera in the home when children playing (to capture shots quickly, enhances sense of realism, audience more involved and encouraged to believe the footage and findings) Most commonly used shots: Medium shots parents speaking, interviews (not too close up but no background distractions), CCTV long shots in the home (enhance the natural feel and realism) Principal Source of Sound: speech, ambient sound, VO Music used: Non-diegetic, fast paced instrumental effective (reflects upbeat and fast-paced shots), aggressive sounding music (fits in with sense of aggression and atmosphere), Madness One Step Beyond (effective popular, attracts desired audience) Editing: Quite fast-paced, quick interchange of images, recognisable narrative structure (begins with voice over quickly introducing the topic and main point of documentary new law in Scotland coming in) Graphics/Special Effects: Texts (captions for professional interviews), credits

Narration/Voice Over: Very successful (appropriate fits with interviews, well delivered, clear, articulate, good sound levels, concise)
Evidence of Research: facts/stats of how many smacks per week, relevant information about the families, Scottish Law planning to ban the use of smacking for kids under age of 3) Subjective/Objective? Subjective both families focussed on agree with smacking children to a certain extent (dominated by people who agree with smacking more likely for the audience to have the preferred reading), presence of the camera may affect the way the families act (could lack validity but most shots dont seem to be tainted by the presence of the camera conveys realism), objective other side of the argument was mentioned How successful was the documentary in conveying its purpose? Quite successful (conveys purpose early on, but a little over-compensated due to the domination of the view that agrees with smacking children) Conventions: Reconstructions (interviews seemed staged), technicality of realism, interviews, Voice of God narration in opening sequence , fly on the wall footage, music, actuality, visual coding, exposition, archival footage, interviews

TEEN SPECIES
Purpose: Life of Teenagers Camera: Use of tripod shots of teenagers, in their room whilst teens were speaking to the camera, hand held camera in house (sense of realism, more involvement of the audience), kids holding cameras showing spectators round the house Most commonly used shots: Medium close-ups conventional for interviews Principal Source of Sound: Ambient, VO Music: Disco fits with shots, upbeat, guitar slightly blues where teenage girl is in trouble (challenges conventions but works well), instrumental Editing: Recognisable narrative structure (starts with youngest teens, story unfolds, introduction introduces people who the documentary will focus on previews and snippets like a contents page, but title isnt shown straight away introducing setting first), fast quick fire editing, use of ellipsis (jumping ahead through time) Graphics: Animation of hormones and graphics of inside the body, through the microscope image of the body changing (educational purposes) Narration/Voice Over: Successful clear and articulate, guides the reader through the documentary, clearly expresses what the documentary will be about in the opening Evidence of Research: Background into families and teenagers who will appear throughout doc, scientific facts about the body and how it changes through puberty, Voice of God narration omniscient, made a script digestible for the target audience of teenagers How successful is the documentary in conveying its purpose? Successful facts in the script and use of graphic educates the audience well Conventions: Voice of God narration, music, facts, actuality, interviews, graphics, visual coding

Different type of music challenges conventions but works well could create this effect in our documentary (create own music, more serious than what would be expected?), introduction acts as a contents page for the rest of the documentary (shows previews and snippets of extracts that will follow in the rest of the documentary), title isnt shown straight away, could use Voice of God narration
