Dear P.E.A.

Members Just as many of us are reviewed by our administrators, holding us to the professional teaching standards, administrators have a set of standards that they are supposed to be held accountable to. These standards call for the administrators to not only efficiently run a school, but to do so in a way that involves all the stakeholders in education. The Association of California School Administrators supports the following California Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (from their web site www.acsa.org): Standard1 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community. Standard2 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth. Standard3 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by ensuring management of the organization, operations, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment. Standard4 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by collaborating with families and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources. Standard5 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by modeling a personal code of ethics and developing professional leadership capacity. Standard6 A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by understanding, responding to, and influencing the larger political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context. Many of the benchmarks at a lower level call for the administrator to work with the teaching and other staff of the school to meet the standards. This survey is designed to focus on those benchmarks. Standard 6 does not have any benchmarks that involve working with the teachers at the school in any significant way. It is often difficult for those evaluating the administrators to accurately gage how well the administrator deals with his/her staff. P.E.A. is seeking to provide this information to the district governing board to better their knowledge of what is happening at the schools they oversee. We know that each teacher sees the situation differently and are requesting the widest possible involvement to provide quality information to the board.
