SOUND SCAPE

By Daniel Harrington

Salvador Dali The temptation of St. Anthony

painted in 1946 this is a masterpiece in its self it is inspired by the master of the 16th century the most popular theme of art At this time. Was the religious art based on biblical story or depicting angles and saints. This painting is a depicting of St Anthony and his struggle against the temptation of lust and the female body. This painting was painted in the studio that the artist occupied for a few days next to the Colony Restaurant in new York. It is the rst and the only time that he participated in a contest. It was an invitational artistic competition for a painting on the theme of the temptation of Saint Anthony, organised in 1946 by the Loew Lewin Company, a movie-producing rm. The winning picture was to gure in a lm taken from the story "Bel Ami" by Maupassant. Eleven painters took part in the competition, among them Dali, Paul Delaux, Max Ernst. The prize was given to Max Ernst. In this painting we notice that saint Anthony is being dwarfed by and inclosed in the bottom left of the painting by the approaching beast. the empty space and around saint Anthony and the foreground are meant to show the distance of temptation in front of him also knelling in the nude which suggest submission to the temptation and also shows the weakness of esh. he could also be in this position because of a unseen force which is pushing the giant white horse back and knocking him back a saviour the power which is symbolised by the cross his religious shield of sorts. which he is holding up as if it was a great shield or has such a force and such power it is frusting him down and knocking the white horse back. this image of a giant horse being scared of saint Anthony and his small body is a strange image maybe Anthony is painted naked cause he has given in to the temptation already. The position of the horse indicates this display of power by how the horse is up on its hind legs exposing its undercarriage. Its mane is blowing in the wind and looks like ames of a re, which might representing the ery passion of sex. The muscular body of the horse can also represent a females voluptuousness. This is reinforced by the horses gaze at the nude womans breasts all the elephants which are in this painting have spindly legs which means they get taller the closer they get which in dali world show mans desire to excel. the lead elephant is carrying on its back the golden cup of lust in which a nude woman is standing precariously balanced on the fragile pedestal, a gure which emphasises the erotic character of the composition. The other elephants are carrying buildings on their back; the rst of these is an obelisk inspired by that of Bernini in Rome, the second and third are Venetian construction in the style of Paladio. In the background another elephant carries a tall tower which is not without phallic like overtones and in the clouds we can glimpse a few fragments of the Escorial, symbol of temporal and spiritual order.

Sonic concept

My sonic concept is echoing sounds and dull thumps i want the echoing sounds because my picture is set in a wide open space i think and seems to be about the mental state of man. It is also a test of mans will so i want to have strong physiological sound Which hint to openness and a wide space both mentally and physically. The fell of the music and sound effects from inception or the new Godzilla trailer are the outcomes I'm looking for. Im playing on getting some drudging sound for the elephants and a trumpet sound mixed with female voices for the temptress. I also want to collect some mumbles or chanting for ST Anthony seeing as in the painting he seems to be praying i think all these elements brought together will create the perfect sound mix to feel my scene.
