ASHOK

LEYLAND

To get the best out of our eco-friendly engine technology through reduced emissions, round-the-year awareness and action programmes are held at operator meets and service campaigns. Indias first CNG-powered Bus was introduced in 1997 in Mumbai. Today, over 6,500 CNG buses ply on the roads of Delhi, Ahmedabad, Vijayawada and Mumbai. Indias first Hybrid Electric Vehicle was showcased in 2002 marking the introduction of another alternative vehicle technology. Indias first CNG Hybrid Plug-in Bus: which uses a combination of CNG and electricity was launched in 2010 and was in service during the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The countrys first Hythane engine was developed in 2009. 20% of Hydrogen is added to CNG to make the engine more fuel efficient and to emit less than normal CNG engines. ACC LIMITED REDIFINING WASTE

ACC has embarked wholeheartedly on a new path of promoting the use of Alternate Fuel and Raw Materials (AFR). The aim is to pursue conservation of the earths mineral resources through waste management solutions. The concept of co-processing is an important plank of ACCs AFR approach. Co-processing is the act of adapting an existing industrial process whereby certain socalled waste materials may be put to use to serve as alternatives resources either as fuel or as alternative raw material in cement kilns, dryers and captive power plants. ACC pioneered the utilization of blast furnace slag, a toxic waste from steel plants, and deployed it into the cement manufacturing process to convert it to make Portland Slag Cement (PSC). ACC also utilizes another hazardous waste namely; fly ash from thermal power plants to manufacture Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC). In December 2005, ACC was recognized and felicitated by three ministries of the Government of India (Power, Environment & Forests and Science & Technology) for registering the countrys highest utilization of fly ash.

Initiatives for Preservation of Global Environment

Phasing out of Ozone Depleting Substances
Carbon Tetra Chloride (CTC) is an Ozone Depleting Substance (ODS) with an Ozone Depleting Potential of 1.1 CTC. It has been traditionally used in steel plants for cleaning electrical machines, oxygen storage tanks, circuit breakers and electrical installations. It has a highly destructive impact on the ozone layer. In order to address the problem of ozone layer depletion, a global agreement- the Montreal Protocol has been drawn up and signed up by over 190 countries. Under this protocol, the Govt. of India along with UNDP has taken up an umbrella project for the replacement of Carbon Tetrachloride (CTC), by Trichloroethylene at the six production units of SAIL viz. Bhilai Steel Plant, Durgapur Steel Plant, Rourkela Steel Plant, Bokaro Steel Plant, IISCO Steel Plant and Salem Steel Plant. UNDP has made available equipment to help SAIL stop CTC use at the plants. SAIL has ceased using CTC in its production activities now. It is hoped that phasing out of CTC by SAIL will contribute towards preservation of the global environment through removal of ozone depleting substances.

Some Novel Initiatives

Bio-fuel Plantations
Bio-fuels today are emerging as the energy options for future. Some promising bio-fuel species like Jatropha and Pongamia are being used traditionally for domestic purposes in many parts of India. Karanj, (Pogamia pinnata), a plant native to India, appears to have good potential for bio-diesel. Bhilai Steel Plant has large populations of Karanj trees both in the plant and the township. In a novel initiative, the seeds from the Karanj trees were collected from the plants growing in the factory premises and used to produce 100 litres of bio-diesel. This bio-diesel has been used in the plant vehicles. This brought a saving of not only costly fuel but also enabled plant employees become sensitive to the need to protect the environment.

MAHINDRA & MAHINDRA LTD

As part of our long-term sustainability plan, all our facilities are following comprehensive plans to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize emissions. At Mahindra, we believe our responsibility to our stakeholders extends beyond providing satisfying products and services to the integrity of our production processes. In 2009, our Farm Equipment plant in Nagpur won the Confederation of Indian Industries (CII) National Award for Excellence in Water Management and our Automotive plant in Nasik received second prize in the state-level award for Excellence in Energy Management. All our Automotive, Farm Equipment, and Components plants are either already ISO 14001:2004 certified or in the process of obtaining certification.

Environmental initiatives make a difference both to the planet and to our everyday lives. When we clean up garbage and pollution and plant trees, we help heal degraded areasand raise our own living standards. Each year, Esops organizes cleanliness drives to clean up buildings or entire villages. In 2010, 75 volunteers from Mahindra Steel Service

Centre Ltd and Mahindra Ugine Steel Company Ltd organized a trash pickup day to make Kanhe a completely garbage-free village. Mahindra World City Developers Ltd organized a comprehensive two-day cleanliness drive at the Government Hospital at Chengalpet, Chennai.

Our biggest environmental initiative yet is Mahindra Hariyali. In 2007, we set ourselves the ambitious goal of planting 1 million trees nationwide to increase Indias green cover and offset national greenhouse gas emissions. In 2008, the Mahindra Hariyali project surpassed our goal by over 200,000 trees. Hariyali brought together Mahindra employees across all sectors and regions. Every Mahindra location, be it a factory, corporate office, or even a dealership, organized tree planting days in partnership with local stakeholders including schools, colleges, trusts, and government forest departments.

All our business initiatives incorporate environmental responsibility, from our zero water waste automobile factory at Chakan to our LEED-certified Mahindra Lifespaces residences. Quality of life and environmental health are two sides of the same coin.

In addition to leading new green business endeavors, we are systematically transforming old practices. We believe big change can arise from small actions, from increasing recycling, reducing waste, and conserving energy in our offices to restricting usage of hazardous substances in our manufacturing activities
