Motivational Appeals & Deception Introduction

McCloud 2

Motivational appeals are external inducements, often of an emotional nature that are designed to increase an individuals drive to undertake some course of action (Gass & Seiter, 2011). Theyre different motivational appeals from humor, pity, and heartwarming just to name a few. Weve all had some type of motivational appeal affect a decision weve made, but Im giving you in my opinion the best ones associate with it. These happen the most and are the most reliable. Body Since there are so many motivational appeals, it becomes quite difficult, at times, to know which other types of frameworks can also be associate with them. With all the reading that I have done, Ive discovered that one framework is really quite similar to the motivational appeals. That framework is the Four-Factor Model. The four-factor model is broken up into four different factors that can influence behavior which are arousal, attempted control, felt emotions, and cognitive effort. The four-factor model simply tries to explain the underlying processes governing deceptive behavior (Gass & Seiter, 2011). When broken down even more tries to tell you why people behave the way they do when they are lying. The reason why the four-factor model is most associated to the motivational appeal is because these behaviors affect/ influence the behavior of the motivational appeals. Without the four-factor model influence you really couldnt have motivational appeals. There are many motivational appeals for example heartwarming, pity and guilt, ingratiation. These different appeals show how if a person tries to persuade you into something depending on your appeal it may or may not have an effect on you to change your mind.

So when thinking about the motivational appeals and how they work, they are often off an emotional nature same goes for the four-factor model depending on the situation you could become very emotional, upset or stay the same. With all these frameworks and models its all about being consistent. If youre a warmhearted person, then most of time people will know that and say he/she is so friendly every time I see them. If you are telling a lie and every time you lie you blink your eyes three times then close family and friends will be able to detect the lie being told because its not the lie you are telling its how your behavior changed while telling the lie that gave you away. Conclusion Motivational appeals are things that I knew about but never really took the time to think of how they affect so many things in our life. How we are shaped by these appeals and then when you add the frame works of the four-factor model and how someone can tell a lie but when you add in how there behavior changes as well. Its something that makes you look around and become if you arent already observant of others and pay attention to the small things because they can become big things at some point.
