BACKGROUND
Forests host most of the worlds terrestrial biodiversity and are important for industries as well as billions of rural people. In addition to wood and non-wood products, forests also provide food that supplement what is obtained through agriculture, thus increasing food security. In the fast developing Asia Pacific region, tropical forests and forest genetic resources are threatened by deforestation, forest fragmentation and habitat degradation as a result of unsustainable harvesting of forest products and the conversion of forests to other land uses. IUFRO Kuala Lumpur 2010 conference will showcase advances in genomics and genetics research for forest species with emphasis on tropical forest species for sustainable management and ultilisation. It will bring together molecular, population, ecological, conservation and quantitative geneticists, managers, and professional foresters to exchange the latest information and technologies and strengthen collaboration. IUFRO Kuala Lumpur 2010 is the joint conference of IUFRO Working Parties 2.04.01 (Population, Ecological and Conservation Genetics) and 2.04.10 (Genomics) which will be held on March 7-12, 2010 at Legend Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and Bioversity International are the hosts for the conference. The conference includes invited and contributed presentations and posters, discussion sessions, workshops, satellite and business meetings and an in-conference tour.

OBJECTIVES
To provide a platform for exchange of ideas and information amongst researchers and practitioners in forest genetics, breeding and conservation. To discuss and evaluate the latest approaches and techniques in forest genetics research and management of forest genetic resources. To promote international co-operation and networking amongst practitioners and researchers involved in forest genetics, breeding and conservation.
