Love Your Job, Not Your Company

Posted by Khushi under Articles, Uncategorized [10] Comments Love Your Job, But Never Fall In Love With Your Company This is interesting. A MUST READ for people doing work late hours out there. An interesting speech delivered by a CEO of a premier IT company of India during an employee session with another IT company in India. He is incidentally, one of the top 50 Influential people of Asia according the latest Asia week publication and also the new IT Advisor to the Thailand Prime Minister. Extract of Mr. Narayana Murthy's Speech during Mentor Session: LOVE YOUR JOB, BUT NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR COMPANY 'COZ U NEVER KNOW WHEN THE COMPANY STOPS LOVING YOU - Narayana Murthy I know people who work 12 hours a day, six days a week, or more. Some people do so because of a work emergency where the long hours are only temporary. Other people I know have put in these hours for years. I don't know if they are working all these hours, but I do know they are in the office this long. Others put in long office hours because they are addicted to the workplace. Whatever the reason for putting in overtime, working long hours over the long term is harmful to the person and to the organization. There are things managers can do to change this for everyone's benefit.

Being in the office long hours, over long periods of time, makes way for potential errors. My colleagues who are in the office long hours frequently make mistakes caused by fatigue. Correcting these mistakes requires their time as well as the time and energy of others. I have seen people work Tuesday through Friday to correct mistakes made after 5 PM on Monday.Another problem is that people who are in the office long hours are not pleasant company. They often complain about other people (who aren't working as hard); they are irritable, or cranky, or even angry. Other people avoid them. Such behavior poses problems, where work goes much better when people work together instead of avoiding one another. As Managers, there are things we can do to help people leave the office. First and foremost is to set the example and go home ourselves. I work with a manager who chides people for working long hours. His words quickly lose their meaning when he sends these chiding group e-mails with a time-stamp of 2 AM, Sunday. Second is to encourage people to put some balance in their lives. For instance, here is a guideline I find helpful: 1) Wake up, eat a good breakfast, and go to work. 2) Work hard and smart for eight or nine hours. 3) Go home. 4) Read the books/comics, watch a funny movie, dig in the dirt, play with your kids, etc. 5) Eat well and sleep well. This is called recreating. Doing steps 1, 3, 4, and 5 enable step 2. Working regular hours and recreating daily are simple concepts. They are hard for some of us because that requires 'personal change'. They are possible since we all have the power to choose to do them. In considering the issue of overtime, I am reminded of my oldest son. When he was a toddler, if people were visiting the apartment, he would not fall asleep no matter how long the visit, and no matter what time of day it was. He would fight off sleep until the visitors left. It was as if he was afraid that he would miss something. Once our visitors' left, he would go to sleep. By this time, however, he was over tired and would scream through half the night with nightmares. He, my wife, and I, all paid the price for his fear of missing out. Perhaps some people put in such long hours because they don't want to miss anything when they leave the office. The trouble with this is that events will never stop happening. That is life!! Things happen 24 hours a day.Allowing for little rest is not ultimately practical. So, take a nap. Things will happen while you're asleep, but you will have the energy to catch up when you wake. Hence "LOVE YOUR JOB, BUT NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR COMPANY". Have a great time ahead!!! About these ads

VASANT Says: July 22, 2006 at 7:57 am LOVE YOUR JOB, BUT NEVER FALL IN LOVE WITH YOUR COMPANY.Mr. Narayana Murthy has told this atfer his long experince so it can be true. But working for a long time in a compony is directly depands upon the Bosses.if they keep every authority with them only and you needs to wait for his decission, for which he may be showing buisiness all the time.More over some persons are lasy so needs to be stayed.I am lucky to get the good bosses,so my Boss says that if you need to stay over, you are consider to be less efficient Reply 3. U WILL NEVER MAKE IT BIG IF UR CAREER IS JUST A CAREER,TREAT IT AS UR OWN BUISSNESS AND U WILL BE THIS MAN ONE DAY. Reply 4. Lawrence Says: July 17, 2007 at 10:33 am Id say, By all means love your company, fall in love with your company as long it is your own company. But neither love a job nor fall in love with it. It has lead no one anywhere. Look at the 95% percent of the people on earth called employees. The more they love their jobs, the better they get at it, and consequently the more the owners benefit out of it. Finally as a great employee, at age 60 you get your End of Service Award thats half the amount of what wasnt sufficient enough when you were younger. Hence the equation, JOB=Journey Of the Broke. 95% of the population of the had been there. If you love your job, you will be there too. Once you are equipped with a skill-set take your job as a platform to break away from the trap called job. Perform your duties to the best of your abilities and cherish every bit of it but this should be done with total and absolute emotional detachment. A job is a means to an end, and the ultimate end is the happiness of your loved ones (wife & kids) and providing the best to them and you have only once chance to do that. You are not on this earth with the purpose of loving your job. Let the CEO take care of that and he will, since he has vested interest. Its not your job to love your job. One last thing treating a company as if it is your own company just cannot happen for the simple reason that you just cant give the neighbours child your all, as you would your own. Its a contradiction in term, Im sorry. Cheers. Reply 5. Nishi Nair Says: September 16, 2008 at 3:39 am I dont think anyone might have put this quote in his signature. Reply 9. KRoy Says: July 6, 2011 at 8:04 am HA HA HA I cant believe that people are not understanding what NRN wants to emphasis here. When he said Your Company he meant your employeer and not your company as if you are the owner. Like love your job but dont love Infy/Wipro/IBM etc (Until and unless u r the owner or director Cheers KRoy Reply 10. ganesh Says: September 4, 2011 at 9:35 pm Yes !! this nice article Reply )
