Saint Michael Parish Mission Statement:
We the parishioners of Saint Michael the Archangel, through leadership and strong traditions
are faithful disciples of the teachings of Jesus Christ and His Catholic Church. We commit our-
selves to be generous stewards of our faith, our parish, and our community. We strive to involve all
members to be united in one parish family for the salvation of all.

Notes from the Pastor: Thanks be to God for this Season of Lent! Our Holy Father, Pope Francis message
for Lent reminds us of our calling to imitate our Master: we Christians are called to confront the poverty of our
brothers and sisters, to touch it, to make it our own and to take practical steps to alleviate it. Destitution is not
the same as poverty: destitution is poverty without faith, without support, without hope. There are three types of
destitution: material, moral and spiritual. Material destitution is what is normally called poverty, and affects
those living in conditions opposed to human dignity: those who lack basic rights and needs such as food, water,
hygiene, work and the opportunity to develop and grow culturally. In response to this destitution, the Church
offers her help, her diakonia, in meeting these needs and binding these wounds which disfigure the face of hu-
manity...Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the
world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take
priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice,
equality, simplicity and sharingNo less a concern is moral destitution, which consists in slavery to vice and
sin. How much pain is caused in families because one of their members often a young person - is in thrall to
alcohol, drugs, gambling or pornography! How many people no longer see meaning in life or prospects for the
future, how many have lost hope! And how many are plunged into this destitution by unjust social conditions, by
unemployment, which takes away their dignity as breadwinners, and by lack of equal access to education and
health care. In such cases, moral destitution can be considered impending suicide. This type of destitution,
which also causes financial ruin, is invariably linked to the spiritual destitution which we experience when we
turn away from God and reject his love. If we think we dont need God who reaches out to us through Christ,
because we believe we can make do on our own, we are headed for a fall. God alone can truly save and free us.

The annual Diocesan Catholic Youth Conference will be March 22-23 at the
Double Tree Hilton Wichita Airport. The keynote speaker is Chris Stefanick.
He is a great speaker and is putting out some amazing videos. We are really
excited that we have 10 youth signed up to go this year. Thanks to everyone
in our parish for helping us with our fundraisers so that we are able to send
our youth to great Catholic events and retreats like this. This is a great way
for our youth to meet other Catholic students in our diocese and to renew and
strengthen their Catholic faith.

Pope Francis Observes a Milestone
This Thursday, March 13, will mark the first year anniversary of Pope
Francis election to head the worlds 1.2 billion Catholics. The choice of Ar-
gentinas Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio, 76, as our 266th pope came on the first
full day of the conclaves 5th ballot. It was fitting that a Latin American be
named since 40% of the worlds Catholics come from that part of the world.
He was chosen to succeed the retiring Pope Benedict XVI. Since 1998, he
has been Archbishop of Buenos Aires, where his style is low-key and close to
the people. Hes been described as an intellectual with managerial skills, cre-
ating new parishes in Argentina and starting new pastoral programs, such as a
Commission for divorcees. He is a man of strong will and compassion.
New Yorks Cardinal Timothy Dolan told reporters last March 13 that the
new pope met all of the cardinals qualifications saying, They wanted to
choose the right man, a man of God, a man of good pastoral governance,
with a sense of the church universal and a good communicator. Many in and
out of the Church wonder what kind of changes, if any, we can expect from
Pope Francis. We know by the name he chose, Francis, that he was dedicated
to simplicity of life. As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he set a tone of simplici-
ty and humility. He personally ministered to the sick and dying in the hospi-
tals there. As Pope, he seems to have signalled changes to the public face of
the papacy in matters of liturgy and ceremony. For his first papal Mass in the
Sistine Chapel, he called for the reinstallation of the altar facing the people
that Benedict XVI had removed. Therefore, we can conclude that his Masses
may be less dignified, though hopefully no less reverent than the Masses of
Pope Benedict. Fr. Jarrod Lies, Director of the Office of Faith Formation,
said, Pope Francis is reminding the church that the New Evangelization
must begin with proclaiming the Gospel--the basic message about the Father,
Son and the Holy Spirit and their saving work and redeeming love. Appar-
ently, we must spread the Gospel to all the world, whether as catechists in a
classroom or as faithful in the work-a-day world.
As to what sort of changes can we expect from our new Pope? We know at
least that neither he nor any pope will ever make doctrinal changes that our
sex-obsessed, violent, self-indulgent culture continues to demand. Pope Fran-
cis colleagues say that he has a good sense of humor; he may need that fac-
ulty as he journeys forth in the years ahead. Article by Marcel Normand
