This assignment, the Candidate Analysis Essay, was an essay predicting the outcome of the 2014 Gubernatorial Election in Maryland. I had to pick three candidates whose campaigns and stances I had to analyze, and then predict who I thought would win. I got a 9/10 on the assignment. This assignment helped me grow in social awareness because it made me aware of social situations around my state. I learned a lot about the different ways to fix the important problems in this state through the different campaign ideas of each candidate. I also became aware of which politicians are doing well and which are doing badly in terms of popularity, which leads to more awareness socially. This piece helped me with streamlining my research. Like all NSL essays, it was long and researchheavy. However, this essay in particular was giving me a lot of trouble in the research stage. This was because all of the information, so new and ever-changing, caused me to overload. My brain was trying to research too many different things at one time, and that prevented me from learning anything useful about the project. But after a couple of frustrating class periods without accomplishing anything, I began to streamline my researching. I would pick a main topic and focus on nothing else until I had learned what I needed to know. This eventually helped get my essay off the ground and completed in a timely fashion. My results didnt differ much from the polls or the general idea. The election was not lacking in competition, but the outcome was not difficult to predict. The real difficulty in this essay came from the analyzing the viewpoints of each candidate. Though they all state their viewpoints of wanting to save everything and give everyone money, they couldnt realistically do it. Finding the realistic plan of each candidate, after many hours of work, was the true point of doing this assignment, for me at least. If I were to do it over again, I would streamline my research more. Though I did a lot of research, those precious lost days could have and would have made a difference. The most important information came towards the end of my research, and more of it may have come out if I had that extra time. That being said, the essay itself was quite long without the extra research. Cutting out information is hard for me to do, because I always want to whole issue to be shown. Extra research could have just complicated the project and made me cut out something that I shouldnt have.
