This module will facilitate the discovery of a range and depth of theoretical and practical knowledge pertinent to understanding self and the wider world. The module aims to foster confidence and self-belief in order to empower learners to find solutions to life challenges or to redesign themselves
Indicative content Ideas, customs and social behaviours that characterise particular people or societies. Theoretical concepts relating to historical contexts and modern cultural aspects including arts, media, sport and music. Cultural aspects: religion, ethnicity, language, sex, disability, science, politics, sociology and anthropology. Cultural challenges: citizenship, equality, diversity, social integration, communication, inclusion and participation. Identity, values and belief systems in relation to the individual, wider society and professional environments.

Learning outcomes: 1. Evaluate theoretical concepts concerning aspects of cultural behaviours in life. 2. Relate their individual cultural identity and beliefs to broader cultural challenges. 3. Explain how knowledge of cultural aspects may improve confidence in life.

Learning and Teaching method

Practical self discovery will be enabled through a combination of lectures and workshops. Group debates, on-line discussions and face to face tutorials will discuss cultural aspects of life in relation to the individual and challenges they encounter. These sessions aim to facilitate the linking of theoretical concepts to various aspects of life.

Breakdown of study time: Scheduled learning and teaching activities Guided independent learning Placement/study abroad Assessment and Feedback: Summative assessment: Students will be required to submit a 2000 word written assignment aimed at demonstrating their ability to meet the learning outcomes. This will evidence an exploration of the following areas. An ability to identify personal cultural identity and relate this identity to broader life challenges. The piece will evidence an evaluation of theoretical concepts pertinent to the subject that may be applied to broader aspects of life. Learning about how this knowledge of cultural aspects may improve confidence in a range of life contexts. 40 % 60 % 0%

Formative assessment: Regular group debates and discussions will be utilised to offer peer and formative feedback on issues relating to personal cultural identity. These discussion will link to on-line individual tasks and forums aimed at supporting students to explore aspects of culture. Formative lecturer feedback will be offered to these tasks as well as an opportunity for face to face tutorials. Feedback: Group and individual verbal feedback from lecturers and peers will be offered to students during the group discussions and face to face sessions. Group and individual written formative feedback will be given to students interacting with the online forums and tasks. Bespoke summative written feedback will be given within 4 working weeks of the assessment submission and comments sent by e-mail.

Related Modules This year one module is the cornerstone of the level 5 module LIP5006 Circle of life, Globalisation and sustainability. In year one, study focuses upon the individual in relation to culture and broader aspects of life. The year two module then develops these issues to analyse wider global considerations including sustainability.
