Pipeline Event at Capitol Teatre
Learn more about opposition to pipelines in BC at the Talk,
Music, Action evening at the Capitol Teatre in Nelson on
Tursday, March 27 at 7 pm. Several speakers, including Ger-
aldine Tomas Flurer, the communications coordinator for
the First Nations Yinka Dene Alliance. Brian Rosen and other
local musicians will be performing. Tickets for the event will

Local activist group Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC is
putting on the event to build opposition to the proposed En-

decision on the Enbridge Northern Gateway project in June.

Income Tax Program (CVITP)
Did you know that community organizations and vol-
unteers help over half a million Canadians fle their tax
returns? Te CVITP is a collaboration between the Can-
ada Revenue Agency (CRA) and community organiz-
ations who host tax preparation clinics and arrange for
volunteers to prepare the returns. Te objective of the
CVITP is to help eligible taxpayers who do not know how
to prepare their income tax and beneft returns, and who
have low to modest income and a simple tax situation.
Under the auspices of the Senior Citizens Association
Branch #81, clinics will be held from 1-5 pm Tuesdays
and Fridays at the Seniors Hall in Kaslo commencing
March 11. If you are unsure if you meet the criteria for
this service or, if you wish to make an appointment, please
call 250-353-7725 between 8 am and 8 pm daily. All en-
quiries will be kept in strict confdence.
Ron was born April 29, 1973 in Castlegar, BC and passed sud-
denly on January 28, 2014 at the University of Alberta Hospital
in Edmonton.
Ron was born to Bill and Sally Douglas and grandparents Ron
and Pearl Leslie and Bill and Mavis Douglas, all of Winlaw, BC.
Ron will be missed greatly by his wife Melanie and children
Allison and Heidi. His life was totally devoted to his wife and
children. Whether it was camping, fshing, hunting, swimming,
or skating, all of his passions centered around his family.
Ron was a dedicated member of the Masonic Lodge 89 of Peace
River, Alberta. He was a devoted employee at the Tolko Sawmill
and was a friend to all the men and women he worked with. He
will be sadly missed by all but remembered forever!
A service was held at Winlaw Hall February 4, with interment
at Slocan Cemetery following. A celebration of life was held at

(Wenger then), has been happily serving Kaslo and the West
Kootenay ever since. To commemorate our 35th birthday in
2010, we produced a movie about the 35 years of Pennywise.

Starting as an 8 page, typewritten paper with hand-drawn
graphics, the Pennywise quickly took off because there was
nothing else like it. Over the years this paper has become a
contender on the international stage...the recipient of numer-
ous international awards for creativity and excellence.
We are very proud of these awards, and enjoy the envy of
our peers who serve much larger markets in areas like Chica-
go, Boston, New York, Miami, Seattle, Red Deer you name
it. We go head to head with big cities all the time and consis-
tently bring more than our fair share of trophies and awards
home to Kaslo, our small town...where our hearts are, says

as quick unexpected movement can scare her. She is looking for an
active semi-retirement home that will take her out on lots of walks
and let her lounge in the sunshine on a nice green lawn, she would
do well with lots of space to exercise as shes a busy girl . Even better
if you have a pond or beach for her to play at, Amber loves the water.

Nell Olive Alexander passed away with her
daughter Cheryl at her side, on February 6,
2014 at Jubilee Manor in Nelson at the age
of 97 years. Nell was born on December 30,
1916 to James and Marion Latimer in Stur-
geonville, Alberta, near Camrose.
Nell was the second youngest of a family of 13.
She received her education in New Norway
where she worked on the family farm.
In 1944 Nell married Ernie Al-
exander in Kaslo, BC. Tey made
their home at Cooper Creek in the
Lardeau Valley where Nell resid-
ed until 2010. Nell lived with her
daughter Cheryl for two years be-
fore moving to Jubilee Manor in
Nelson.
She was very active in the
community, serving thirty
years in diferent positions
for the Lardeau Valley
community. Most of
Nells interests and time
was dedicated towards
family as she always helped out her children and grand-
children, even babysitting her youngest grandson in her
80s. Nell was an avid gardener and also loved to be bak-
ing in her kitchen. She learned to ride a bike at age 67
and got her drivers licence at age 72. Knitting,
and particularly making quilts, were two of
Nells favourite pastimes. In later years she
became an avid landscape painter and gave
every family member a painting.
She was predeceased; by her parents, 12
siblings, her daughter Linda (1972) and
her husband Ernie in 2001.
Nell will be lovingly remembered by
her sons Richard of Cooper Creek and Ken
(Birthe) of Creston, and daugh-
ters Donna Stickney (Dave) of
Nelson and Cheryl (Bob) Sin-
clair of Cooper Creek; as well
as her 11 grandchildren, and
11 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life
will be held at a later
date. Friends wishing
to make a memorial
tribute in Nells name
may do so to the
Lardeau Valley
Historical Society.

Nelson Steps Up To Te Plate For
Wendy And Norman Richard
Nelson is known for its generosity, to lend a helping
hand when life deals you a curve ball. Tats why friends
and neighbours of Wendy
and Norm Richard are in-
vited to come together on
March 22 at Bigby Place
on Front Street in Nelson
for a community gather-
ing of music, and support.
We want to show our
support for these two
wonderful people who
are experiencing fnancial
stress due to a long and
continued health crisis,
says Nelson artist Yvonne
Munro.
Wendy is one of those
people who tries to fnd
the silver lining in every
situation and she is cer-
tainly being tested here. Yvonne and Wendy have been
friends since the 1980s. We have followed each other
around the province, raised our kids together, and sup-
ported each other through the highs and lows of growing
up and growing wiser. Wendy is truly my Sister by Love,
says Yvonne, who organized the gathering.
Sixteen months ago, Wendy was diagnosed with ad-
vanced and aggressive breast cancer. Tis has been fol-
lowed by grueling chemotherapy, a mastectomy, radiation
therapy, and continued chemotherapy, as well as natural
and supportive therapies. As with many people under-
going cancer treatments, the therapy has caused serious
fnancial strains on the family. Norman, a musician him-
self, is well known for or-
ganizing the Unplugged
acoustic music sessions
at Ellisons on Saturday
afernoons.
Music seems like the
perfect way to bring
people together for an
evening, says Yvonne.
Yvonne has organized
a silent auction on her
facebook page under
Yvonne Munro, which
starts March 7, and runs
to March 21. Successful
bidders can pick up their
items at the evening
event.
Te support has been incredible, says Yvonne. We dont
need any more gif donations for the Silent Auction, but if
people want to donate money, they can do so at the CIBC in
Nelson in an account that has been set up for the Richards.
People are welcome to bring a small snack to share at the
event and bring their own beverages, Yvonne says.
