Making a Business out of Medical Technologies that Benefit People and Society
An aim of research and development is to turn new technologies into practical solutions that can grow into new businesses. One such example is the OSferion bone replacement material supplied by Olympus Terumo Biomaterials Corporation which was commercialized through research and development of techniques and materials that support the natural healing abilities of the human body. Elsewhere, Olympus collaborates with universities to explore new possibilities. The example include the use of stem cells taken from fat and research on minimally invasive treatment techniques such as the use of intelligent robotics technology to perform surgery. This later technique uses a robot operated from outside the body to minimize the surgical incisions.

Seeking out Life Science Technologies that Illuminate Biological Processes

In the life science field, Olympus has been strengthening its collaboration with the worlds leading researchers, research organizations, and medical institutions to support its research and development, commercialization, and marketing of medical equipment. Olympus is contributing to peoples health and progress in medical science by developing technologies that support the practical use of advanced diagnostic techniques such as 3D live cell scanning technology and molecular imaging technology that can selectively illuminate cancer cells.

Detecting tumors with a fluorescent probe.

The advanced optics in this spectroscopic video endoscope help achieve very early detection of cancer by detecting small changes in cells.

Creating Inspirational Digital Imaging Technologies

Capturing beauty in images that inspire emotion in the people who take or view them. This ideal is the motivation behind Olympuss development of advanced algorithms and imaging devices and its efforts to improve the capabilities of image processing. For example, Olympus studies how the brain function changes in response to an image. In other words, Olympus analyzes the relationship between the emotion and the brain activity when we look at an image. This knowledge is then incorporated into image processing systems. This work gave birth to the i-FINISH mode in which the camera automatically identifies and analyzes the photographic subject to achieve vivid reproductions that make you feel as if you were there when the photograph was taken.

Manufacturing

Robust Manufacturing Plant Supported by Superior Production Technology The High Quality of Olympus Products and Services is Underpinned by our Manufacturing DNA

Seeking Technology Leadership

Microfactories
In recognition of the threat of global warming, manufacturing plants need to operate in ways that minimize their emissions of CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other waste. Olympus devised the concept of Microfactories for in-house manufacturing using small-sized production machinery as part of its company-wide manufacturing strategy and is now working to implement this idea. One practical example is a small lens film coating machine which is less than half the height and width of the previous machine, 90% smaller in volume, and emits 75% less CO2. The machine also reduces the process time by 70%, providing both superior environmental performance and cost savings. Olympus is also developing other very small production machines for use in component processing and assembly processes. Microfactories not only allow manufacturing to be performed in an environmentally sensitive way, they also encapsulate know-how in the form of a black box and are expected to play a major role in preventing the loss of production technology offshore.

Close Attention to Customer Needs

XZ-1 High-End Compact Digital Camera
If a small but clear lens were available that took beautiful photographs ... The dream that encapsulates this hope was one shared by high-end compact camera customers. In response, Olympus overcame numerous technical hurdles to start fullscale production at its Shenzhen Plant in China of compact cameras that for the first time ever were fitted with the ZUIKO lenses that its customers have loved for three-quarters of a century. However, the road travelled to bring about this achievement was a hard one involving repeated trial and error. Although the optical performance is equivalent to a interchangeable lens system camera, a high level of precision was needed to make the lens smaller and thinner. After much work, the production line was established with assistance from Olympus OptoTechnology Co., Ltd. in Japan. The XZ-1 high-end compact digital camera came about thanks to the pride and effort of Olympuss optical technology specialists and others who worked on the project and has been highly rated by third-party consumer reviewers in Europe and America.

Manufacturing the Olympus Ways

Manufacturing has been part of the Olympus DNA since its very beginnings. To pass this DNA on to the future while devising and commercializing new generations of Olympus products and services, Olympus established a Corporate Monozukuri Innovation Center (CMIC) in April 2010. Olympuss aim is to boost its performance dramatically by improving the level of its production technology and the capabilities of its manufacturing plants as well as by seeking to achieve sustainable manufacturing from the development stage through to environmental measures.

Building our Brand through Quality

Endoscope Repair Service (San Jose, USA)
Endoscopes are used inside the human body, so even small faults in their operation have the potential to cause medical accidents. Accordingly, the quality of these instruments after repair and servicing needs to be as good as new. Olympus has established an industry-leading repair and servicing organization so that patients can be confident about undergoing endoscopic tests and treatments regardless of where in the world this is done. A typical example is the San Jose National Service Center in California, USA which is the worlds largest endoscope repair center. This very large service center has a staff of about 250 and can perform repair work to a standard equivalent to the endoscope assembly process at the factory in Japan. Currently Olympus has more than 200 service sites spread across 6 continents. These deliver the best possible service regardless of location thanks to a global service quality evaluation program managed by the service headquarters of the Medical business unit. Manufacturing quality is the basis of Olympuss endoscope business.

Monozukuri (Manufacturing) Makes People

Technical Master Program at Ina Plant
Even in our era of fine-scale processing machines that use advanced computer-based numerical control, a high degree of human skill will continue to be needed as long as people are part of the production line process. Now, many manufacturers face the question of how best to transfer the finely honed skills of these master craftsmen to the next generation of workers. Olympus has established a system for training technical staff with a high level of skills that is based on the idea of people as a manufacturing asset. The origins of this system lie in the Technical Master program at Ina Plant which produces microscopes (Olympuss first ever product) with a focus on staff training and succession. Also, manufacturing workplaces always have master craftsmen. Over time, a variety of skills have been handed down through the apprentice system. In particular, the long history of Olympus microscopes could never have come about without the handing on of know-how by teachers. These exceptional skills handed down over time are passed on from the past to the present and from the present to the future.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Olympus is Engaged in a Variety of Activities for the Benefit of Every Living Thing on Earth as well as Creating a Sustainable Society

Relationship between Society and its People

Using Photographs to Present the People Working to Achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals
Together with the United Nations Development Programme and Agence France-Presse (AFP) Foundation, Olympus has been running the Picture This: We Can End Poverty photo contest since 2009 to showcase the ongoing work that people are doing to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which include the aim of halving poverty by 2015. A photography exhibition and award ceremony was held at the UN headquarters in New York to coincide with an MDG summit. The winners were awarded prizes from Olympus. The many photographs carry a strong message and show the world the tough conditions faced by some countries and the significance of what people are doing about this.

Working with the TABLE FOR TWO Organization to Solve Poverty and Hunger
TABLE FOR TWO is a charity organization originating in Japan that simultaneously addresses hunger in the developing world and obesity and other life-style related diseases in the developed world. To support this objective, Olympus in October 2010 introduced menu options at its staff canteens and beverage vending machines in Japan that allow staff to make a monetary donation of 20 yen per meal or 10 yen per drink to developing countries through the TABLE FOR TWO International nonprofit organization. School meals not only satisfy empty stomachs, they also play an important role in fighting poverty by, among other things, improving attendance and boosting basic health.

TABLE FOR TWO

Products that Everyone can Use ... Product Development with an Emphasis on Accessibility
Olympus is also working to develop products that can be used by everyone. It consults with disabled organizations in Britain and America as well as Japan and reflects their views in product designs. For example, the digital voice recorder DM-4, in addition to its standard features, also includes a DAISY* talking book function and voice guidance for its operation menus. It has been awarded Color Universal Design certification for the way its design is suitable for people with different color perception. The Social IN management philosophy also extends to designing products that are accessible to people with disabilities.
*DAISY is an Abbreviation of Digitally Accessible Information System.

Support for Brave Circle Colorectal Cancer Prevention Campaign

Colorectal cancer can usually be cured if identified early enough. However, only 27.5% of males and 22.7%* of females in Japan have received colorectal cancer checks. One factor contributing to delayed detection is that there are few subjective symptoms in the early stages of the disease. To change this situation, Olympus launched the Brave Circle colorectal cancer prevention campaign in 2007. The campaign has organized a range of events and other measures such as putting up posters to encourage people to have colorectal cancer checks. The organizing committee registered as an NPO in 2009 and Olympus will be supporting its activities as an official supporter from 2011.

Establishing Eco-Friendly Facilities that Suit Local Conditions

Olympus Surgical Technologies Europe (OSTE) deals with environmental issues in ways that are appropriate to local circumstances. At its service center in the Czech Republic, it has reduced electricity use by 74% with the aim of becoming the first plant in Central Europe to achieve the Class A environmental classification. To make more efficient use of resources, the company has also installed equipment to allow the reuse of organic solvents that it uses in its processes. At its factory in Germany, it now purchases all of its electricity from natural renewable sources to achieve zero electricity-related emissions of CO2, a saving approximately 2,000 tons per year. This corresponds to an annual saving of approximately 2,000 tons of CO2.

Access and Benefit Sharing is Considered for the Country that Provides Bio-Resources Based on the Convention of Biological Diversity
Olympus markets and sells a microscope for cell function analysis which makes possible to capture feeble bioluminescent light from live cells. Since much brighter bioluminescent reagent is required in the use of this microscope, bright light-emitting species of firefly from Malaysia has been examined. At the start of the research, Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) for Malaysia has been considered based on the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). This research was conducted jointly with a Japanese venture company that is allowed to access to Malaysian bio-resources by Malaysian government and was also developed under the split of benefit sharing such as filing patent application jointly with the involving parties including the authority of Malaysian government and the rate of royalty if it moves towards to a reagent business.
