Social IN
The Olympus Group, blending with society as a whole, and sharing its sense of values, proposes new values through its business conduct and thereby pursuing and securing a healthy, happy, more meaningful life for mankind.
We now name this result "Social IN", describing the basic Olympus philosophy underlying all our activities. The term Social IN derives from Social Value in the Company.
We aim towards establishing firm ties with the society through the three INs.
Social Involvement
Mission
The objective behind Social IN is Our Commitment as a Value-Creating Company. Being a Value-Creating Company means earning a high degree of trust by creating and delivering the value that society needs.
a great dream
Precisionand Technology.
Social IN is Olympuss management philosophy. It embodies who we are, our mission, and our dreams for the future. Since starting out as a producer of microscopes, Olympus has opened up new frontiers in optical technology by taking up the challenges of the microscopic world. This optical technology has contributed to advances in bioscience, and by combining it with advanced technologies from other fields, Olympus has astonished the world with high quality products in medicine, life science and industry, imaging, and information and communications. Ways of helping people achieve healthy and fulfilling lives that are now only a dream may in the near future become reality and in doing so bring forth new dreams. Olympus seeks to give shape to these dreams of infinite potential.

Corporate R&D Center Supports Product Development with Advanced Platform Technologies
The Corporate R&D Center is responsible for product innovation. It provides technological support across the entire Olympus product range while developing and facilitating new technologies that look ahead ten years into the future. Its aim is to utilize new ideas and technologies to turn dreams into reality and create a prosperous future for everyone. To achieve this, the R&D Center builds on Olympuss worldleading opto-digital technology by combining advanced technologies in ways that go beyond individual disciplines to produce its own leading-edge technologies in fields such as medicine, life science, and digital imaging.
Making a Business out of Medical Technologies that Benefit People and Society
An aim of research and development is to turn new technologies into practical solutions that can grow into new businesses. One such example is the OSferion bone replacement material supplied by Olympus Terumo Biomaterials Corporation which was commercialized through research and development of techniques and materials that support the natural healing abilities of the human body. Elsewhere, Olympus collaborates with universities to explore new possibilities. The example include the use of stem cells taken from fat and research on minimally invasive treatment techniques such as the use of intelligent robotics technology to perform surgery. This later technique uses a robot operated from outside the body to minimize the surgical incisions.
Intelligent robotics technology that medical doctors can manipulate as if it were their own hands (example of actual use).
The advanced optics in this spectroscopic video endoscope help achieve very early detection of cancer by detecting small changes in cells.

The Future Creation Laboratory undertakes research into services, tools, and other products based on new concepts devised by imagining what future values the society and people of the future will seek. Past developments have included a display unit in the form
of a pair of glasses that can provide information at the ideal timing and an imaging system that can capture and display panoramic 360 images. The laboratory will continue to produce new imaging and information services that support a lifestyle full of delight and discovery.

Asahi Microscope
Olympus founder Takeshi Yamashita established the company with the dream of producing microscopes, the first of which came out in 1920 and was called the Asahi. During this same year the company went on to develop and produce six further microscope models designed for use in applications such as medicine, silk production, and elementary and middle school classrooms.
Imaging
Olympus continues to supply products that convey a sense of new value, particularly digital cameras and IC recorders. For its interchangeable lens system digital cameras, Olympus has developed the Micro Four Thirds System which it uses to provide small and lightweight designs with high image quality and ease-of-use. Meanwhile the functions of products such as linear PCM recorders and radio servers have been upgraded in response to user feedback. To give more people the opportunity to experience the joy of photography and the delight of sound, Olympus will continue to open up these worlds in ways made possible by digital technology.

Endoscopy
Endoscopic Video Imaging System Broncho Videoscope
This endoscope system has three imaging enhancement features (narrow band imaging: NBI, Auto Fluorescense Imaging:AFI, Infra Red Imaging:IRI) that, by controlling the wavelength of light, allow for observations such as thickening of the mucous membrane, deep blood vessels, and capillaries on the surface of the mucous membrane, which are characteristic of lesions. It provides support for early detection of cancerous minute lesions and pre-operative diagnostics for endoscopic therapy and surgery.

Using Photographs to Present the People Working to Achieve the United Nations Millennium Development Goals
Together with the United Nations Development Programme and Agence France-Presse (AFP) Foundation, Olympus has been running the Picture This: We Can End Poverty photo contest since 2009 to showcase the ongoing work that people are doing to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) which include the aim of halving poverty by 2015. A photography exhibition and award ceremony was held at the UN headquarters in New York to coincide with an MDG summit. The winners were awarded prizes from Olympus. The many photographs carry a strong message and show the world the tough conditions faced by some countries and the significance of what people are doing about this.

Working with the TABLE FOR TWO Organization to Solve Poverty and Hunger
TABLE FOR TWO is a charity organization originating in Japan that simultaneously addresses hunger in the developing world and obesity and other life-style related diseases in the developed world. To support this objective, Olympus in October 2010 introduced menu options at its staff canteens and beverage vending machines in Japan that allow staff to make a monetary donation of 20 yen per meal or 10 yen per drink to developing countries through the TABLE FOR TWO International nonprofit organization. School meals not only satisfy empty stomachs, they also play an important role in fighting poverty by, among other things, improving attendance and boosting basic health.
Products that Everyone can Use ... Product Development with an Emphasis on Accessibility
Olympus is also working to develop products that can be used by everyone. It consults with disabled organizations in Britain and America as well as Japan and reflects their views in product designs. For example, the digital voice recorder DM-4, in addition to its standard features, also includes a DAISY* talking book function and voice guidance for its operation menus. It has been awarded Color Universal Design certification for the way its design is suitable for people with different color perception. The Social IN management philosophy also extends to designing products that are accessible to people with disabilities.
*DAISY is an Abbreviation of Digitally Accessible Information System.

Access and Benefit Sharing is Considered for the Country that Provides Bio-Resources Based on the Convention of Biological Diversity
Olympus markets and sells a microscope for cell function analysis which makes possible to capture feeble bioluminescent light from live cells. Since much brighter bioluminescent reagent is required in the use of this microscope, bright light-emitting species of firefly from Malaysia has been examined. At the start of the research, Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) for Malaysia has been considered based on the Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD). This research was conducted jointly with a Japanese venture company that is allowed to access to Malaysian bio-resources by Malaysian government and was also developed under the split of benefit sharing such as filing patent application jointly with the involving parties including the authority of Malaysian government and the rate of royalty if it moves towards to a reagent business.
