Sugar Process Chemical

AVIFLOC*S 5580
Floatation Flocculent For Raw Sugar Refinery

Copolymer of acrylamide and sodium acrylate manufactured to precise tolerances
containing specific chemical groups to give a strong adhesion to calcium phosphate
precipitates.

consumption)

Description and Use

AVIFLOC*S 5580 water soluble polymers which have been developed specifically as
aids to the rapid flotation of phosphatation scums at the clarification stage of
refinery processing.
The clarification process makes use of the two stages of flocculation termed primary
and secondary. Primary flocculation effected by phosphatation is followed by
aeration. Secondary flocculation occurs using AVIFLOC*S 5580. It is gather both
primary flocs and air bubbles into secondary flocs that have an extremely rapid
flotation rate resulting in brilliant clarified liquor.
When used in conjunction with AVISTOLPC40 & AVISTOLM75 colour precipitants
or other decolorants, AVIFLOC*S 5580 ensure rapid floc flotation and stable, free
draining scums. The temperature and the retention time in clarifiers is reduced
giving lower sugar degradation losses and considerably increased plant capacity. It
can also be used successfully in scum desweetening to increase recovery of sugar
from phosphatation scums.

Typical Applications
AVIFLOC*S 5580 is a medium to high molecular weight, slightly anionic flocculant in
a highly active powder form. This product is recommended for the clarification of
high concentrated liquids, as in refinery liquors or syrup, in the process of
clarification, particularly for the production of direct consumption sugar. The
product often works at very low dosages. The use of jar tests helps to establish
correct dosage levels.

Advantages
AVIFLOC*S 5580 are carefully tested to ensure each batch meets our strictest
specification for anionicity, solubility and viscosity thereby ensuring the high
quality of our product.
The specifications of AVIFLOC*S 5580 are in accordance with the requirements
of the FDA.
Increased plant capacity and lower sugar degradation are obtained because of
the significant reduction in retention time and temperature in the flotation
clarifier.
When used in conjunction with any of Cheminova range of decolorants, the
secondary flotation action of AVIFLOC*S 5580 results in a brilliant clarified
liquor and rapid floc flotation.
It gives more compact, less fluid scums which means better drainage.

Preparation: Dosage &
A 0.1% solution should be prepared (1 kg per 1000 liters of soft water at a
temperature of 50-60C) in a mixing tank filled with air spurge pipe, educator or
slow speed paddle for agitation of no more than 400 rpm. The solution should be
aged for a minimum of 2 hours in a holding tank. Enough should be made up for one
shift or one day's operation (but no more) as flocculent solution more than24 hours
old will lose its activity.
Point of addition:
How to Use:
Using a metering pump, add 8-10 ppm (based on sugar solids) into the normal
process stream of raw sugar production, just prior to the aeration equipment, in
order to ensure a homogeneous mix of the flocculant.
The clarification and purification of syrup and refined liquor is complemented with
the previous application of our decolorizing agents, such as AVISTOLPC40 &
AVISTOLM75(please refer to technical bulletin for further reference).

It should be stored in a dry, clean environment away from direct sunlight and
preferably at a temperature above 5C and below 40C.
Storage stability when stored as recommended:
Storage & Handling
Granular powder in original packing : at least 12 months
Stock solution in tap water (0.5 %) : at least 3 weeks
Ready-to-use-solution in tap water (0.1 %) : at least 10 days

AVIFLOC flocculants have a low order of toxicity. The acute oral (rat) LD50 and
dermal (rabbit) LD50 values are >2.5 g/kg and >2g/kg respectively. Direct contact
with these materials may cause eye and skin irritation.
Health & Safety:

AVIFLOC*S 5580 is a packed in 25 Kgs. net polybag.
