To : Director of Institute of Occupational Safety and Health Report of Mobile Phone Caused Problems Regarding to the title, as a manager of institute would like to writing this report to you to explain the scenario and safety precautions on how to avoid the problems become serious. This report also aim on dangers of excessive use of the mobile phone and some change need to be taken to reduce the problem to be worsen. Almost every adult has a mobile phone, and so do many children. Prof. Kenneth J. Rothman, one of the worlds leading epidemiologists, states the following: Within only a few years a substantial proportion of the worlds population has adopted a new technology that involves placing a small radio transmitter up against the head, in some instances for hours a day Mobile phone is a communication tool used to deliver message especially in the form of message conversation. Most phones operate by using an electric signal transmission via phone network that allowing the phone user to communicate with each other. No one can deny the importance of having a mobile phone as a person can contact anyone among the relatives even thousands of miles away, find out important news, current and latest issues just in a second. Since past few years the usages of mobile has increased very rapidly. Pretty much everyone have it now. People do not leave their homes without their mobile phone. For many people, it's convenient way to communicate. Many parents provide their children with mobile phone for safety reasons. Mobile phone had some disadvantages as well. It is also have impacted society. They have left an ever-lasting impression on our culture. The use of mobile phone has been proven to be big distraction. There are car accidents occurring everywhere due to the lack of attentiveness of drivers. Parents now think that it's better to buy mobile phone for their new teen drivers for emergencies, but do you really think that they are used for those only? And since mobile phone are so fabulous, then why do you always get busy, roaming signal and cause you to keep redialing number till you finally get 2

through to that person? After all that trouble you are normally bothered and frustrated. Things like these can created accidents and even death. Drivers should play a role for their own safety and aware that not only they are using the roads and the action actually will cause an accident to others as well. Campaign such as No Phone Zone is important to alert the driver that use of mobile phones on the road while driving is dangerous and they should have known there is a law states the prohibition on using mobile phones while driving. If it is emergency calls, it is better for drivers to stop for a while at the roadside to pick up the phones. The mobile phone makes work easier and gets the people to socialize, but sometimes it leads us to be antisocial. At the time of sophisticated and modern, all things done without having to sit and shift from one to another activity left such like transfer money, book tickets, shopping, ordering food and so many more will be done without leaving an inch of the seat. People become lazy to do anything, if this situation last for long period, it will destruct the social skills of individual and their self-confident to face another people. Especially in work, somebody that always be with their mobile phone, clearly seen to be less social with others. And it decreased the rate of their work. Previous research studies show no evidence of the impacts of mobile phones to human health. A wide research program on the implications of mobile phones effects has been started in a number of countries. A cohort study of 550,000 users was carried out in Denmark[10]. This is a retrospective cohort study of the incidence of cancer in all 420,095 users of cellular telephones during the period of 1982 to 1995. Overall, 3391 cancers were found, with 3825 expected, which yielded a significantly decreased standardized incidence ratio of 0.89. No increased incidence was seen for cancers of the brain or nervous system, of the salivary gland or for leukemia, cancers which were of a priori interest. The results do not support the hypothesis of an association between the use of these telephones and tumors of the brain or salivary gland, leukemia, or other cancers. Radiation is enormously hazardous to mobile phone users. The more cell phone uses, the greater chances become for brain cancer. When mobile phone first came out, people purchased them in case of emergencies. Now, people bring their mobile phone everyplace they go and use them for pleasure, not essentially for purpose. As convenient as mobile phone may seem, there is 3

more to it. Conscientiousness must be taken more sincerely and people need to be more aware of the risks that are involved in purchasing and using cellular phone. Dr. Hyland, a scientist who is based in the physics department at Warwick University and at the International Institute of Biophysics in Neuss-Holzheim, Germany said that the body is an electro-chemical instrument with exquisite sensitivity and the kind of radiation emitted from mobile phones has an impact on the stability of cells in the body. Children are particularly vulnerable Referring to the effect of microwaves from a mobile phone. He says, "The main effects are neurological, causing headaches, lack of concentration, memory loss and sleeping disorders. Children are particularly vulnerable because they are still developing their immune systems and are less robust than adults and can cause of epilepsy to them. Human laboratory studies of the acute effects of exposure to mobile phone signals suggest that exposure to mobile phone signals at exposure levels that fall within existing exposure guidelines have biological effects that are of sufficient magnitude to influence behavior. The causal mechanism is unclear, but could include a small, localized heating effect. However, these studies do not provide evidence directly relevant to the question of the safety of mobile phones in the long term. Experimental designs employed focus on only the consequences of short-term exposure. Malaysians mobile phone users are increased from time to time. According to the Ministry of Information, Communication and Culture, on average, a Malaysian has two mobile phones that later the statistics clearly show that it is been a necessity in our lives. Recently, the Ministry of Education announced the students can bring phones to school and it totally provoked mixed reactions among parents and teachers, whether good or bad reactions. Taking mobile phone to school can disturb their concentration in study. Fixed with online gaming, messaging, social network and so on could be one of the major reasons to destruct their study at school. It also be the same in workplace especially those who are work at factory. They have to focused on their work on the machine to avoid an accident occur. Safety first is considered whenever you are handling on machines. Serious injury may occur if you are careless.

In these modern days, where everything needs to do quickly and efficiently, we cannot avoid from using mobile phones to finish everything we need to do. Therefore, the action we need to do is we must reduce the dependence on mobile in resolving every matter in our life. Do jobs that require us to move normally as we need movement is a basis of life. Although using mobile phone we can still do some movement, yet the movement produced is limited. This situation will lead to hyperkinetic due to lack of movement to body muscles. The long-term effect of this hyperkinetic is heart disease, obesity, laziness and produce unhealthy social culture and lifestyle. The job that we know we still can do it physically, do it while we can, as we can remain healthy by doing it. Cell phone monthly bills are usually more than a landline bill. Sometimes, we may not require for have cell phone but we still buy one and start paying monthly bills; so it increases our monthly/recurring expenses. Use of hands-free (wired/Bluetooth) can at times pass on loud sounds to our ears which can result in weakening of ear-drums. Nowadays, one can download lots of songs, so keeping the hands-free glued inside your ears for long hours can really affect the sensitivity of ears in the long run of life. There have been cases of cell phone blasts, due to the excessive heating up of its battery. This can be a fatal issue; although rare. No joke, the surface of a cell phone has millions of bacteria and virus on it and that can be a strong reason of immediate skin problem on face or can result into other internal infections wherein the microbes creep inside the body through mouth or other openings. Some use the keypad excessively; due to size restrictions the buttons and keypad of the cell phone are not natural for human hands; so excessive and prolonged typing can be an issue for fingers and finger joints. All this disadvantage and distracted thing need to be control to reduce more unwanted incident occur. As we know, mobile phones are really important to everyone nowadays. But, if we not control the things which may cause trouble, it could be worsening. The manager of safety and health in every company should take action especially for those who are working and handling machine in factory. The act and company rules have to publish to workers for them to be alert the effect of their careless.

As a conclusion, everyone needs mobile phone for their activity and communication tools that connect us to everyone far from us, besides to find information etc. We can maximize it with many benefit of the technology. It is the right of individuals to use the mobile phones as the phone belongs to them, but it is our collective responsibility as a society to spread the impact or advantages results from the use of this tool on a regular basis in everyday. The most important is to excessive use of mobile phones and exceed because it may affect our work and concentration to other more important things.
