Christians who uphold integrity and faithfulness as important values cannot
help but feel a little uneasy with the season of Lent as it leads us inexorably toward a
grim symbol execution upon which our Savior endured a slow, lonely death. On the occasion of
Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem scant days before his arrest, many, many people who saw in
him the fulfillment of the Hebrew Scripture’s promise of a messiah came out to cheer his entrance
into the city. They were hopeful that they were seeing a day foretold in their Scriptures, and in
retrospect, they may well have seen the very thing for which they hoped. As with so many occasions
when we finally receive something for which he have yearned, when they looked upon their messiah
more closely, they were bitterly disappointed.
They had hoped for a warrior who would overthrow the evil empire of the Romans and
establish the religious nation of Zion once again. They had hoped for one who would carry out justice
with more than a smattering of retribution upon the tyrants who had ruled their lives, and in many
cases, destroyed their lives. They had hoped for one who would bring peace by eliminating evil.
Instead, they got a soft-spoken man who would not even defend himself when a soldier
accosted him. They got a prophet who demanded they treat all people with love and respect, whether
they were Hebrews or not. They got a messenger who proclaimed that God’s reign was all around
them while they still toiled under the burdens of oppression.
A few days after they cheered him in the streets, they gathered in those streets again and they
spat at him and reviled him. He had dashed their hopes and shattered their dreams! Oh, they wanted
a messiah, but they wanted a particular kind of messiah, and Jesus was most definitely not what they
expected. They abandoned all faithfulness to their failed messiah. They were happy to throw away
their values like once-comfortable sandals that had come to wear blisters on their feet. They had no
use for a messiah who would die passively on a cross at the hands of the Romans! What use was
integrity and faithfulness if it only got you crucified?
So, two thousand years later, we remember, and we shudder. We see ourselves on the road to
Jerusalem, in the Palm Sunday crowd cheering Jesus, and we are painfully aware of our absence at
the foot of the cross; we wonder if we are any better prepared to follow him than were the people
who cheered him two thousand years ago and a few days later abandoned him as he made his way to
Golgotha. We know we are called to live with integrity and faithfulness, but we don’t like looking at
what those values got the One in whose footsteps we follow.
God calls us to walk the path before us with the integrity and faithfulness God’s grace
provides, and our human failings mean we will be forever in debt to God’s grace and forever in need
of God’s forgiveness. We can either abandon our high standards or strive to live up to them accepting
our tendency to fall short.
I do know this—living without integrity or faithfulness is not living at all! Jesus taught us that
we were created to love God and love one another. Consequently, I invite you to set out with me on a
great journey during which we will fail often, but we will never give up. Happy Lent!
