Thanks all Since many people have requested me for my preparation strategy, i believe its my duty to share my experience

with you,so i am writing my experience with Electronics and Telecom but it will be beneficial for other branches as well. (Note:- If you are looking for some magic trick or shortcut then close right now) FAQ When to start ? Easy way :-If you work hard in college you can crack IES easily without much effort. Those who have strong basics can clear it easily even while in job. Hard way:- Unfortunately I belong to this category,I was never serious in college and was 4th in class, but after realizing my mistake i have to start from scratch(almost zero) and had to leave job to focus solely on IES. Is IES only for toppers ? This is other misconception, anyone can clear IES with hard work.I was 4th in my class with 79% aggregate and cleared it in my first attempt with 7 months dedicated preparation so first thing WORK HARD Is Coaching must to clear IES ? I am against coaching, even though i joined made easy and studied there for 7 months but i left in between to do self study(it worked) and would advise others to do same unless you have too much money to spare. IES requires special material and notes ? Absolutely not unless you are lazy and looking for shortcuts,I had Made Easy material but never referred them and always focussed on standard books and have self made notes (and please dont ask me to upload them you have to earn them, make your own note HARD WORK pays ) How to start ? Well Begun is half done True but dont waste too much time in thinking what to do,if you are from E&T/electrical start from Network numericles and practice,Once you gain confidence with numericles then half of your preparation is over(make sure you are not shy with calculator) .Then start with other subjects accordingly but again Practice as many numericles as possible.

Materials to follow Electrical and Electronics(partially) ? I am against using too many books and would advise aspirants to focus on limited books Here are topic wise books that i followed :1.Network-: I referred only one book AK Chakrobarty even though there were many mistakes in this book but still there are enough problems to practice, other than this make sure you solve both EE+ECE IES and IAS previous 10 years conv problems 2.Control Systems-: I referred selected problems of Manke and Nagrath but mostly i focussed on previous year problems of IES+IAS (both EE+ECE) 3.Measurement and Instrumentation: Cover all the instruments given in the syllabus thoroughly from the Sawhney. Here also guide will be IES questions 4.Analog Electronics :- Diode, Transistors and Amplifiers are easy and can be done from any book while for other (IMPORTANT) topics refer JB Gupta Topics that are to be covered from JB Gupta are: Oscillators, Op Amp, Wave shaping circuits, Multivibrators, Waveform Generators and Power supplies. 5.Digital Electronics :- For Electrical people its not that imporant just refer any coaching notes and solve some standard questions asked in IES. FOR EE::::(Collected from my EE frnds) 6.Machines :- For theory refer Ashfaq Hussain and make good command over all the numerical given in this book and PS Bhimbra(only for numericles) from my electrical friends. 7.Power System :- I referred CL wadhwa,Power System Analysis by Ramanna(very good book for concepts and numericles) Chapters of Protective relays and circuit breakers (from Wadhwa) cover large part of the syllabus in much better way.(for EE) 8.Power Electronics and Electric Drives:(EE) PS Bhimbra is sole source and cover it thoroughly Chapter 2(characteristics of diode, BJT, MOSFET, IGBT), chapter 4-Thyrister(complete), chapter 5 Thyrister commutation techniques (complete), chapter 6 Phase controlled rectifiers(Leave dual converters), chapter 7- Choppers(Leave Thyrister Chopper circuits and multiphase choppers) , chapter 8 Inverters(Leave force-commutated thyrister inverters, current source and series inverters) and chapter 12-electric drives(complete). Cover all the derivations (like deriving expressions for particular type of rectifier or inverter) as well as working of circuits.

9.Analog Communication: Selected Chapters from Singh and Sapre are more than sufficent usually problems asked are very easy from this topic and one must not leave this topic at any cost 10 Microprocessors and Microcomputers: Only one book Gaonkar Cover chapters 1 to7 and 9, and parts of chapter 8 and 10(from which questions has been asked in IES exams), In peripherals cover 12, 14, 15, 16 (Focus more on whatever has been asked in IES papers). 11 Materials ;- Sp seth along with previous year questions is more than sufficient 12. E.M. Theory: Refer Sadiku for selected topics also see SP seth for EMT i found it really useful (Thanks to Prakash Sir for his guidance ) Does IES and Gate require different strategy ? True,IES is 80% hard work and 20% luck based but in Gate lot depend on luck as 1 silly mistake can drop your rank drastically but i would still advise you to focus on IES and Gate would automatically be covered (make sure practice as many numericles as possible) I never prepared for Gate and was focussed solely on IES . How to prepare GS ? GS cannot be prepared in one week,it requires long term effort. Case 1 :- If you are from Hindi Medium till class 12 and weak in English Then make sure you develop habit of reading, don;t start with Hindu type stuff, start with http://www.short-stories.co.uk/ Childrens Section (We must learn to walk before we can run.) After that start with Hindu Newspaper and never mug up words make it part of your usage Case 2 :-If you are from English Medium till class 12th and feels IES english portion is a piece of cake then just make sure you practice questions from previous papers of upsc GK portion ( IES made easy notes /PD) 1.History :- Read History of modern India (Old NCERT)-Class 12 Bipin Chandra (one can easily get it from Jawahar Book shop) This book is real fun and should read it like a story book twice or thrice (no need to make notes) After that solve previous year question papers of IES+CDS+CPF(AC)+NDA

2.Geography :- Read NCERT class 11 and 12 then solve previous year question papers of IES+CDS+CPF(AC)+NDA 3.Polity:- Read NCERT (our Constitution at work Amazing book) then solve previous year question papers of IES+CDS+CPF(AC)+NDA 4.Current Affairs :- Dont waste too much effort on them as its vast and it will drain your energy.just refer some coaching notes to get quick revision and then pray 5.Biology :- Refer NCERT class 11 and 12 then solve previous year question papers of IES+CDS+CPF(AC)+NDA Other Important points :1.If you have time then do listen to debates All india Radio (Spotlight @9) it will improve your general awareness and communication skill 2.English portion is more scoring focus more on it 3.Avoid spending too much time on Social Networking Sites like Facebook, during my preparation days i was off facebook as its a big distraction and would advise serious aspirants same (ALL THE BEST) Regards!!!
