Name:_____________________________ Smoothie Sales Its a hot day in sunny California, and your little brother asks you if you

could bring him to Jamba Juice to buy a smoothie, so you do. You buy two smoothies at the store, and each cost $4. While it was enough to satisfy your brothers thirst, you felt that the taste was mediocre for the price that you paid, and felt that you could make better smoothies yourself. You decide to try your hand at it, and see if you can make a profit off of selling smoothies. Your little brother eagerly agreed to help. On the Internet, you found this simple, but promising, recipe. Smoothie Recipe 1 cup apple juice 1 cup frozen strawberry 1/2 cup frozen banana 1 cup vanilla frozen yogurt 1/2 cup ice

*Makes 3 smoothies

Next, you make a trip to the grocery store to find out how much ingredients will cost. To do this, we first need to figure out the unit price for each ingredient. Unit price is the price for a single quantity (i.e. price per cup, price per item, price per liter, etc.) In our case, the units for all the ingredients in the recipe is in cups, so the unit price that we want to find is price/cup. Please complete the table, showing your work, and round to the nearest hundredth place. Note: Calculating the unit price for bananas may be slightly trickier. If you need to, check out hint card #1 at the front of the class.

1. How much would it cost to buy ingredients for 1 batch of smoothies?

2. How much would it cost to buy ingredients to make a single smoothie?(Remember: 1 batch = 3 smoothies)

3. How much would it cost to buy ingredients to make n smoothies?

After you buy all the ingredients, you realize that you dont own a blender! Fortunately, amazon.com sells blenders at an affordable price. You decide to use your allowance money to purchase this one:

Hamilton Beach 58148 Power Elite Multi-Function Blender, Black

Total price (including shipping) = $30 After purchasing the blender, you realize that the cost of making smoothies just went up by $30, and you want to know how the purchase of this blender affects how much money you can make. 4. If you take into account the money you paid for the blender as well as the money you paid for the ingredients, how much would it cost to make a single smoothie?

5. Taking into account the ingredients and blender, how much would it cost to make 2 smoothies?

6. a) Taking into account the ingredients and blender, how much does it now cost you to make n smoothies?

After talking it over with your little brother, you decide that since Jamba Juice sells their smoothies for $4 and you want to be competitive, you should sell your smoothies for $3 each. b) As the number of smoothies you make increases, do you think the total profit you make will increase or decrease? Why?

You are interested in seeing how the profit you make per smoothie changes as you change the number of smoothies you make, so you do some calculations: Complete this chart, showing all your work. When you think you have noticed the pattern, generalize each column for n smoothies :) (Remember: Revenue is how much money you make, and Profit= Revenue - Cost) # of Revenue Smoothies, n 1 10 100 Cost of ingredients & blender Profit Profit per smoothie, Q(n)

Write Q(n) in terms of n: Q(n) =________________________________________________ Your little brother is confused as to what exactly Q tells us, and asks you if you could explain it to him. 7. In your own your words, explain what n and Q represent:

Use your graphing calculator to make a graph of your equation. Sketch the graph below, paying careful attention to important points such as x and y intercepts: Be sure to label and scale your axes!

8. What are the units of the values on the x-axis?

9. What are the units of the values on the y-axis?

10. For what values of n make sense in the smoothie context? Please explain your reasoning.

11. Looking at your graph, estimate the minimum number of smoothies you need to make in order to cover all your costs: (If you need a hint for this one, check out Hint #2)

______________smoothies

12. Using the equation you came up with for Q, algebraically calculate the exact number of smoothies you need to make to cover all your costs. (If you need a hint for this one, check out Hint #3)

Of course, it is not enough to simply cover all your costs--you want to make a profit to make all your effort of making all those smoothies worth it! 13. How many smoothies do you need to make to make a profit of $1 for every smoothie?

14. How many smoothies do you need to make to earn a total profit of $100? Refer to your equation for profit in the table.
