A Homebuilt Dip Station

Why Do it Yourself?

By CL Vancil For some its the high cost of sports equipment that prevents them from purchasing such things. For others, the location they live in hasnt got a convenient place to purchase fitness equipment or it simply costs to much to ship it to them. For many of us it the pleasure you get form making something yourself and the satisfaction of learning to use new tools, materials and systems. In this case its a simple Dip Station made of Galvani ed steel pipe or !"# pipe. $he %asic design is the same in either case. Galvani ed pipe is readily availa%le, %ut can cost as much as the product youre trying to mimic and requires some skill in assem%ling it without putting a lot of unions in the design. &ssem%ly can %e tricky with pieces of pipe %ecause of the nature of threaded parts. 'hile threading together more than two pieces you often are undoing one side while tightening the another( $his is where unions allow you to screw together parts, %ut you need to allow for the length unions add to any piece of pipe. So it might %e simpler and %etter for some to make this out of something lighter and easier to assem%le)!"# pipe. Im sure a *.+, inch schedule -. pipe would work as well as the galvani ed steel pipe and cost much less. $he galvani ed pipe assem%ly shown cost me over /*0. 1SD which is a%out the cost of the 1ltimate 2ody !ress 3u ana and Frederick use. 4ere is the parts list for the Dip Station I made5 6all are 07- inch galvani ed steel pipe8 *9* *7+ inch :ipple 6its what plum%ers call a short piece of pipe8 *9 + inch :ipple *9#oupling *9 , inch long piece of pipe *9 *; inch long piece of pipe + 91nions ;9 <. degree el%ows +9 =$ee>?

+9 *+ inch long pieces of pipe @9 +- inch long pieces of pipe +9 0@ inch long pieces of pipe $o assem%le the steel pipe version you will need an open space, gloves and at least one pipe wrench. Start at the union which is screwed onto the 0@ inch length of pipe. It really doesnt matter which end or which part of the union you use. 2ut, lets start with the + inch nipple and the part of the union with the two pieces. Aou then connect one of the <. degree el%ow and a +- inch length of pipe. $hen another <. degree el%ow and the *+ inch length of pipe. :eBt connect to one of the $CCs and another +- inch piece of pipe. Dkay do you get the general ideaE $he last thing you would assem%le would %e the cross %race with the other union and the , inch long piece of pipe and the *; inch long piece. 4ere is a parts list for a Dip Station made of *.+, inch !"# pipe5 ;9 <. degree el%ows +9 =$ee>? +9 *+ inch long pieces of pipe F9 +- inch long pieces of pipe +9 0@ inch long pieces of pipe &nd a small %ottle of !"# !ipe #ement Some places 6i.e., 4ome Depot8 you can %uy +- inch pieces of !"# pipe already cut to length. 2ut, you do need two *+ and two 0@. Dr I guess you could go with cutting a +- long pipe in half and with two couplings glue up two 0@. $hat would change how many +inch pieces you need and you might as well cut the other two *+ inch from a +- as well. $his wouldnt %e the cheapest route as a single precut +- inch piece costs a%out half as much as a *. foot lengths of pipe which normally you would cut to the correct lengths yourself. &s you can see this is a %it like %ig people GCGDs or Crector Sets. &nd if you make either of these Stations and actually use it for eBercise and not the dust collecting piece of art I designed it as, its your own fault(
