Keynote Speaker
Why should I care for debating?
Ary Ferreira da Cunha, the World Debating Champion, made himself available to be in Colgio Internato dos Carvalhos, enrolling as the keynote speaker for the XIII CICMUN. Later, when we get home and this experience belongs to the past, well probably wonder Why did it matter? and thats how Ary began his brilliant speech, focusing on debating and its purpose. Why should we debate? he firstly asks and then answers: we should debate because it changes us, it changes society, it makes you care and we need people who care. It makes you value yourself and opens horizons. Ary also explained that it is very important to start as soon as possible, saying I wish I had started younger. I was afraid of being vulnerable in public. Focusing on the MUN itself, this young speaker stated that debating the question of fighting terrorism in the Middle East, the immigration or the European problems is an important way to change the world and, as he said, Whats cooler than that? As a final advice to all the young public, Ary encouraged the audience to grow up fast, bright and empower themselves. They desperately need to, because someone out there actually cares.

The Lobbying
The 13th CICMUN started off with the opening ceremony, where the organization team expressed their vows of good luck to all the presents. The lobbying began immediately, and the delegates moved directly to the room according to their issues. Although the majority of students were from CIC, they all exchanged different points of view. Between the discussions, it was realized that everyone was feeling excited and interested, and the main goal was clear: finding the right resolutions. The resolutions approved were submitted by the United States, India and Libya. As the end of the first day of CICMUN arrived, a feeling of accomplishment and joy overwhelmed all the involved. Next step: day 2!

INTERVIEW TO ARY FERREIRA DA CUNHA

The press team had the privilege to ask a few questions to Ary Ferreira da Cunha, and he gladly responded.
Firstly, were in CICMUN so we must ask you, whats your opinion about this kind of experiences? It is very important for young people to speak with each other, to debate, to be in someone elses shoes, to address people who have very different opinions from their own. a bit nervous but as you speak more and more, to larger audiences, the nervous feeling you have actually diminishes. It is very important for you to speak as much as you can, because feeling nervous is not a bad thing per say, it is when it blocks you. Getting a little nervous is also good for you, so youll never stop preparing your speech. this prize, but we thought that, when this eventually happened, we would be old. Who are your biggest inspirations? When I was young, I had a passion for JFK. He was a brilliant speaker. Then, I was very moved by Martin Luther Kings speeches. Today, Id say Barack Obama, whom I admire deeply as a politician and as a speaker. Last but not the least, whats your vision towards your future? Thats a tough one. Im doing a PhD in Law, so thats basically what Ill be doing for the next years. The rest I dont know (smiles).

We have to ask this. How does it feel like to be the World Debating Champion? It feels very unreal, especially because we only started this two years ago, so achievDo you ever get that nervous feeling ing something like that so soon is amazing. when youre speaking in public? We wanted this for the University of It diminishes a little over time. When you Oporto, but we never thought it would have some extra pressure, you always feel be us. More Legends
Jos Ribeiro, last years Head of Press, also spoke to the Press Team. Whats your opinion about this CICMUN edition? Its being very interesting and Im finding exciting to see juniors and seniors participating and debating. Last year you were head of Press. Whats the feeling now that you are a guest? It feels a bit strange and, at the same time, really good. I just want to participate again. Its a whole new vision, and it feels like the time flies while being a member. As a guest, its both good and sad, but I also feel very proud to know that I was a part of this huge experience. Since youve been Head of Press, I assume youre majoring on something related to Journalism. Is that true? Im in Languages and Business relations at Aveiro University, Are you planning on coming again and maybe participating in the CICMUN legends as a delegate? Yes, it would be a new and exciting experience. Raquel Sequeira Sabine Rocha
