UJIA People-to-People Programme

The purpose of the UJIA Peopleto-People Programme is to create opportunities for building long-lasting relationships and individual friendships between British Jews in the UK and the residents of the Galil. It brings an extra level of closeness, understanding and empathy between our community and Israel. And when people meet and get to know each other, amazing things can happen. The UJIA People-to-People Programme gives us great ways to support Israel and enhance our own community at the same time. Both the UK and Israeli communities benet enormously from the relationships these programmes create we estimate that over 90,000 young people and their families benet either directly or indirectly each year.

from the Galil each May during the week of Yom Hazikaron and Yom Haatzmaut to stay with UK families. Teenagers from these UK families are then hosted by Israeli families in the Galil.
 With our UJIA School-to-School

Partnership, 10 schools from the Galil are partnered with 10 Jewish schools in the UK, with visits to each other allowing pupils, families and teachers to connect with and learn from each other.
 UJIA Mifgashim (Encounters) brings

young people from the Galil to UK youth movement camps, and British students on Gap Year to the Galil.
We partner with Arsenal in the

Community to involve Gap Year participants in coaching football to boys and girls, Jewish and non-Jewish, in the mixed Arab-Jewish city of Akko. Will you help us maintain and strengthen these connections? Lets rst hear from Jack:

Let me tell you the story of my father - his family is from Aden. His parents had to leave when things got difficult for the Jews there. They went to Addis Ababa where they lived for 35 years until Haile Selassie was overthrown - then they had to leave Ethiopia and went to Israel.
So my Dad grew up with both the Hebrew traditions and a few of the Ethiopian ones too especially the food which we all love including my mother who is English! Jacks family is now established in the UK Jewish community. Pacados family have been in Israel for just over a year.

Pacados father explains why they had to leave Ethiopia:

So, given they that they live thousands of miles apart, what brought Jack and Pacado together? The UJIA Ethiopian Bar and Bat Mitzvah Twinning Programme. UJIA provides funding for Ethiopian children living in the Merkaz Klita (absorption centre) in Tsfat to learn about their roots, build on their Jewish identity and strengthen family ties. In the second half of this programme, each Israeli youngster is twinned either with an individual child in the UK or one of UJIAs twinning clubs in London, Manchester, Leeds and Glasgow. Whats inspiring about the twins is how close they get, despite their very different backgrounds and the language barrier. There is a Jewish connection between them which is so powerful it overcomes these obstacles.

There has always been anti-semitism in Ethiopia, and its getting worse. We still have families back in Ethiopia and they tell us that the non-Jews shun them or yell at them Go with the other Jews. Youre taking up space here. This is not your land.
He continued: Coming to Israel was a lifelong dream. We struggled for years and gave up everything that we had for the chance to bring our children to Israel where they can grow up as proud Jews.

Both twins get an extra dimension to their Bar/Bat Mitzvah experience which becomes very important to them. It celebrates both their differences and what unites them. And it creates a bond that isnt just between them as individuals and families, it is also one of the strands that creates a link of real meaning between our UK Jewish community and the people of Israel.

These strands come together in the UJIA People-to-People Programme, an amazing series of projects all built around the energy and vitality that happens when people meet face-to-face.
