ith the mounting pressure to reduce the emission of

Greenhouse Gases, hydrocarbon processing plants
face big challenges in future operation. A combination
of new and complex legislation, trading opportunities,
public pressure and environmental consciousness brings
this industry into a new age where the Greenhouse Gas
(GHG) emissions may set constraints on throughput and
operating margins.
METHODOLOGY
As part of our Environmental Service offerings, we provide
a Carbon Management Services program to help plants
develop a strategic plan for implementing emission
reductions complying with legislation, while remaining
competitive.
Step 1 - Current Emission Levels
Using our experience in process plant technology
and operation, we review the sites current CO
2

emissions levels. This requires an assessment of the
sites ability to properly measure emissions and
a comparison of actual emissions with legislative
standards. For that, we employ our EFuel fuel
reconciliation model, Hydrogen balance model, and
KBC CarbonManager. This sets the basis for a future
GHG emission management strategy.
Step 2 - Benchmarking & Gap Analysis
Knowing the current emission levels, KBC compares
the plant with current Best Technology and Best
Practices to determine the maximum potential of
greenhouse gas emission reduction. The main
potential is in energy effciency improvement, but
other Gaps such as measurement facilities, faring,
fuel switching, and hydrogen network optimisation
are likely to be identifed.

Step 3 - Reduction Roadmap
Although the Gap analysis shows the maximum
potential for a customer to reduce emissions, only
projects that can be practically implemented should
be considered for the RoadMap. Projects on this
RoadMap are ranked such that the most benefcial
projects receive the highest priority. Depending on the
location of the site, KBC can assist the site in attracting
additional funding for implementation as a Joint
Implementation (JI) or Clean Development Mechanism
(CDM) project.
TOOLS
KBC CarbonManager is a tool for management level
representation of site CO
2
emissions, with a clear
breakdown of sources. It calculates CO
2
produced from
individual combustion equipment, not from emission factors,
but from combustion equations. The software incorporates
all relevant equipment in process plants, including those
shown in the following diagram:
KBC CarbonManager compares the emissions from
specifc units against the regulatory limit. It also evaluates
the potential for reducing CO
2
through energy effciency
and fuel switching. When linked to the DCS, KBC
CarbonManager can be used to trend the historical CO
2

emissions pattern of the site, and it can be used for day-
to-day monitoring and targeting of GHG emissions.
Step 4 - Implementing and Sustaining
To be able to sustain the lowest emissions, KBC im-
plements monitoring and forecasting tools, which will
closely tie in to the energy management system. Ad-
ditionally, our ProSteam software can be employed
for online open loop utility system optimisation.
