What is GPRS
GPRS brings packet switching in GSM >> Always connected, always on! New air channel coding scheme >> Higher data rate from 9.05kb/s to 171.2kb/s! A new sub network in GSM connecting to data networks (Internet) >> Utilize existing BSS coverage! The end user sees GPRS as a wireless Internet sub network >> Flexible Charging, based on data volume, access point, etc!

GPRS MS MODE OPERATION

Class A

simultaneous GPRS and Conventional GSM operation Can operate both services (Circuit-switched and GPRS data transfer)
simultaneously

Class B

can be attached to both GPRS and Conventional GSM services can listen to circuit-switched and GPRS paging supports either circuit-switched calls or GPRS data transfer but not
simultaneously (only one set of services at a time)

ClassC

MS is exclusively only attach to GPRS or Conventional GSM operation, no

simultaneous operation

GPRS Class Type

The class of the device determines the speed at which GPRS can be used. For example, the majority of GPRS terminals will be able to download data at speeds of up to 24Kbps (kilobytes per second). At the higher end, speeds are theoretically possible up to 171.2 kbit/sec when 8 slots are assigned at the same time to a single user. In reality 40-50Kbps. PC cards capable of GPRS will send data up to speeds of 48Kbps. Compare this to current data speeds available:

Type GPRS GSM CSD HSCSD Dial-UP ISDN Standard ADSL Broadband

Uplink (Sending) 14 kbps 9.6-14 kbps 28 kbps 56 kbps 64 kbps 256 kbps 2 Mbps

Downlink (Receiving) 28-64 kbps 9.6-14 kbps 28 kbps 56 kbps 64 kbps 512 kbps 2 Mbps

GPRS Multi Slots Classes

Multislot classes are product dependant, and determine the maximum achievable data rates in both the uplink and downlink directions. Written as (for example) 3+1 or 2+2, the first number indicates the amount of downlink timeslots (what the mobile phone is able to receive from the network). The second number indicates the amount of uplink timeslots (how many timeslots the mobile phone is able to transmit). The active slots determine the total number of slots the GPRS device can use simultaneously for both uplink and downlink communications.

TE : The TE (Terminal Equipment) contains the endtoend application, which is using the PS part to transmit and receive the endusers packet data : The MT (Mobile Terminal) establishes data communication between a TE and the PDN. The MT is associated with a subscriber in the cellular network and is connected over a radio network to an SGSN : The Equipment Identity Register (EIR) is a database holding information about MSs International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) : The Customized Applications for Mobile network Enhanced Logic (CAMEL) Service Control Point (SCP) contains the CAMEL service logic. The SCP stores service and subscriber data and executes the service logic program that implements the CAMEL service : Charging Gateway Function, The CGF receives CDRs from the GGSN in near realtime and may store the CDRs in a persistent storage. : Billing System, The BS Retrieves Charging Data Records (CDRs) from the GGSN : The Online Charging System (OCS) allows realtime credit control and charging of user traffic : The Policy and Charging Rules Function (PCRF) provides the GGSN with dynamic authorization and policy control information
