INTRODUCTION
For over 200 years music boxes have fascinated and enchanted millions of people the world over. Antoine Favre, a watchmaker from Geneva, Switzerland, invented the first mechanical musical movement in 1796. The industry stayed centered in Geneva until 1811 when it moved to the village of Sainte-Croix, where the tradition lives on to this day. The most famous and world renowned manufacturer from this area is Reuge Music, which produces the beautifully toned Romance Musical Movements. In 1996 - 200 years later - The Berry Basket started a music box tradition of our own. Designing the first of hundreds of scrollsaw music box patterns to come, world renowned scrollsaw artist Rick Longabaugh, created a beautifully animated Christmas Nativity. From this first patterns overwhelming response came new patterns for snowmen, santas, angels, Noahs Ark, carousel horses and more. Now, we are proud to introduce to you the first scrollsaw pattern book in our Music In Motion Series. This unique pattern book will show you how easy it is to create beautiful animated keepsakes that will be treasured for generations to come. With full-size patterns and step-by-step instructions, youll be creating enchanting scrollsawn music boxes to celebrate the holidays of Christmas, Easter, Valentines Day and more.
LUMBER CHOICES
Selecting the type of material to use is very important for the final outcome of your project. Although, plywood could be used for many of the music box projects contained in this book, we highly recommend choosing any of the beautiful hardwoods available. The elegant nature of these heirloom-quality projects is far more impressive with the creative use of contrasting hardwoods. Mixing dark woods such as walnut, mahogany, koa, etc. with light woods such as maple, birch, alder, etc., will give the most striking effect. If you do not have a local source for your hardwood lumber, please contact the following suppliers: Sloans Woodshop 3453 Callis Rd. Lebanon, TN 37090 615-453-2222 Memphis Hardwood Lumber 6535 Church St. Memphis, NY 13112 315-689-3949 Good Hope Hardwoods 1627 New London Rd. Landenberg, PA 19350 610-274-8842 If you are relatively new to scrollsawing, we recommend using a high quality Baltic Birch plywood, for cutting such pieces as Overlays, Figures, the Tops and Bottoms, Turntables, etc. It is easier to work with, and can be stained for color contrast. If you are unable to purchase Baltic Birch from a local source, please contact THE BERRY BASKET at 1-800-206-9009 for pricing.
SANDING
For most projects, it is best to sand the work piece prior to applying the paper pattern and cutting the design. Once youve cut the design, and removed the paper pattern, it may be necessary to lightly sand any glue residue remaining, along with any fuzz on the bottom side.
PATTERN COPYING
The patterns contained in this pattern book are intended to be your master patterns. We recommend making photo/xerox copies of the project pieces and then using a repositionable spray adhesive to adhere them to your work piece. Please be aware that some copy machines may cause a slight distortion in size. This is more likely to occur on very large patterns. We highly recommend copying your patterns and using a repositionable spray adhesive to adhere them to your work piece, rather than tracing. It is easier, less time consuming, and far more accurate!
BLADE SELECTION
There are many opinions pertaining to which blade to use with which type and thickness of material, as well as, with how intricate the design in the project is. The more time you put into scrolling, the more your choice of which blade to use will become personal preference. For the beginning scroller we make the following recommendations to get you started: Blade Specs Material Thickness Blade Size Recommended 1/16 - 1/4 #2 1/4 - 1/2 #5 or #7 1/2 - 3/4 or thicker #7 or #9 Width .029 .038 .045 .045 .053 Thickness .012 .016 .017 .017 .018 TP1 20 12.5 11.5 11.5 11.5
VEINING
Veining is a simple technique that will bring a lifelike appearance to your project. The veins of a leaf or the folds of clothing will look more realistic when this technique is incorporated. To vein, simply saw all solid black lines as indicated on the pattern. Some areas of the pattern you will be able to vein by sawing inward from the outside edge, while in other areas you will need to drill a tiny starter hole for the blade.
STACK CUTTING
Stack cutting is fairly simple to do and can save you a lot of time when you have 2 or more identical pieces to cut for a project. If you are fairly new to scrollsawing and stack cutting, we recommend cutting no more than a total thickness of 1/2 for best results. On projects with fairly simple shapes to cut out, 2 or 3 layers could be held together by double-sided tape, or by using spray glue on paper to sandwich between the work pieces. On more intricate projects we suggest using #18 wire nails or brads slightly longer than the total thickness of the stack you are cutting. Tack the nails into the waste areas you will cut out, along with a few around the outside of the project. If the nail has gone through the bottom of the work piece, use a hammer to tap it flush, or use coarse sandpaper to sand the points flush with the bottom of the work piece. If you are stack cutting hardwoods, do not tack the nail too close to the pattern line or it may cause the wood to split. Another option would be to predrill for the nails with a slightly smaller drill bit so the nail will fit snugly and hold the layers together securely.
AUXILIARY TABLE
Most scrollsaws on the market today have an opening in the table around the blade that is much larger than what you really need. This often causes small and delicate fretwork to break off on the downward stroke of the blade. An easy solution is to add a wooden auxiliary table to the top of the metal table on your saw. To make an auxiliary table, choose a piece of 1/4 - 3/8 plywood similar to the size of your current saws table. If you choose, you can cut this plywood to the same shape as the metal table on your saw, or any shape or size you prefer. However, we do recommend that you make the table larger than what you think you will need for the size of the projects you will make in the future. Next, set the auxiliary table on top of the metal table. From the underside of the metal table, use a pencil to mark the location where the blade will feed through. Then turn the auxiliary table over and drill a 1/16 - 1/8 diameter hole, or slightly larger than the blade you will be using. Finally, apply a couple of strips of double-sided carpet tape to the metal table on each side of the blade. Then, firmly press the auxiliary table onto the double-sided carpet tape, making sure that the blade is centered in the hole.
FOOT INSTRUCTIONS
Several of the patterns contained in this book require the cutting of 2 or more Feet. Following is a simple procedure that produces the decorative wooden Feet that will elegantly support your music box treasure. Please see the Options section for additional Foot ideas. 1. Prior to applying the spray adhesive to the back of the pattern, fold where indicated on the dashed lines. Then spray with the adhesive and apply the pattern to the work piece. 2. Turn the workpiece upright so that the portion of the pattern marked Rear View is facing up. Then, cut on the solid line. Top 1 3. Next, turn the work piece so that the Top View is 2 facing up. Cut following the solid line 3/4 Back Rear 4. Remove the view paper pattern, sand 3 as needed, and 1 Top attach where view Back indicated on the project.
A music movement (tune), metal turntable, and key are required to animate each of the projects designed for this book. If the store where you purchased this pattern book does not carry the music box movement kits, please call THE BERRY BASKET at 1-800-206-9009 for tune selection and pricing. Please note: Before cutting the opening in the Frame for the music box movement, compare the size and shape of the plastic bottom with the solid line on the paper pattern as sometimes it varies. The plastic can be sanded to fit the opening, if needed or you can also recut the opening.
FINISHING
The finish can be applied to these projects either before or after assembling. For many of the pieces, especially those with a fair amount of fretwork, it is easier to apply the finish prior to assembling. We recommend a method called dipping. Pour your favorite penetrating oil, such as Watco Danish Oils, Tung Oils, etc., into a dishpan type of container. Then dip your pieces into the oil, allowing the oil to get into all of the cut out areas. Drain off the excess oil, and follow the oil manufacturers instructions for buffing, drying time, additional coats, etc. For a glossier, more protective finish, allow the oiled pieces/projects, to thoroughly dry then spray with a clear lacquer or varathane coat.
OPTIONS
By using your imagination and creativity, youll see that many of the Overlays, Figures, Turntables, etc. are interchangeable with one another. Another option to consider is using a 2 3/4 diameter forstner bit or hole saw to bore the hole into the Frame for the Music Box movement, rather than cutting it. Cutting the 1 1/2 thick Frame will probably be the most challenging part of these projects. Using the proper size of scrollsaw blades will make this step easier. A universal #9 or larger blade is highly recommended. This will make cutting quicker and more accurate. Also, depending upon the type of wood you are using for the Frame, you may want to consider using a double skip-tooth or precision blade. Another option for the Frame, is using a bandsaw with a 1/16 - 1/8 blade for cutting the outside Countersink to shape. Note: that the more teeth per inch on the 1 attach blade, the smoother the cut will be. Still, another option for cutting the Frame, is to cut two 3/4 thick pieces of wood separately, and then secure them together with wood screws or glue. To start, adhere the paper Frame pattern to one 3/4 thick workpiece. Cut the outer shape 3/4 and opening for the music box movement following the solid lines. Then, countersink in 2 locations for #6 x 1 1/4 F.H. woodscrews, being careful to NOT countersink where indicated for attaching the Bottom to the Frame. Secure this half of the Frame to the remaining 3/4 thick work piece with Cut on traced lines. 2 the #6 screws. Next trace the shape of the top Frame half onto the bottom half workpiece. Remove the screws and separate the 2 halves. Cut the bottom half on the solid line, then reattach the 2 halves together with the screws, and sand where they meet until flush. This method also allows you an opportunity to add a decorative touch to the middle area of the Frame. Prior to reattaching the 2 halves of the Frame use a roundover or beading bit where the 2 halves meet. 3 Reattach the 2 Options pertaining to the Feet, include using halves. decorative wooden finials, portions of axle pegs, spindles, or smoke stacks, as well as brass, metal, or porcelain pull knobs designed for drawers or furniture. Again, use your imagination and be creative!
ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTIONS
HORIZONTAL TURNTABLE PROJECTS
Assemble by first attaching the Top to the Frame with glue and finishing nails or silicone. Next attach the music box movement to the topside of the Bottom with screws or silicone. Before the silicone sets, be sure to position the Frame over the Bottom to make sure the music box movement is aligned correctly. Then secure the Bottom to the Frame. Next, attach any required Arch, Feet, Overlays, and Figures where indicated, securing with wood glue or silicone. Now attach the metal turntable to the bottom of the wood Turntable with silicone and then attach the Figure to the top. Finally, attach the turntable and key to the music box. NOTE: It is important that the music box movement bottom be in contact with the wood (topside of the Bottom) in order to have the best tone. If using silicone, be careful to not use too much as it may squeeze out from between the 2 pieces and get into the movement itself.
