Information to the students

Each student is responsible to keep updated on important dates, deadlines and other issues regarding their studies. Main bases and means of information from the college to the students are:

Internet Our comprehensive web pages contain most of the information you will need, and these pages will be your main source of information. From the college's homepage, you will find information about formalities, laws and regulations, routines, different services, curriculum, course descriptions, class schedules, as well as useful links and search options. See http://www.hit.no

Fronter Fronter is a communication system used for tutorial purposes throughout the Faculty of Technology. An introduction to this system will be given to all new students. Time and place will be announced. Each course will have it's own "home room" in the Fronter system, accessible for all students registered to that particular course and the course lecturer(s). In addition, Fronter has an Information Room (or a "bulletin board"), where messages and important information relevant to all students or groups will be posted on a day-to day basis.

E-mail All students will be assigned a formal student e-mail address (studentnumber@student.hit.no). Information/messages from the administration to individual students or smaller groups of students may be sent by e-mail. Only the student e-mail address will be used for this purpose.

When information is sent to the students in this way, it is considered to be official and it's the student's own responsibility to pick it up. It is therefore expected that you read this e-mail regularly.

Courses Handbook ("Studieomtaler")

The Courses Handbook contains detailed information about curriculum and courses, including detailed course descriptions, course requirements, assessment forms etc. The formal catalogue is published in Norwegian and English for the Bachelor programmes and in English for the Master programmes in Energy and Environmental Technology, Process Technology and Systems and Control Engineering.

We also expect students to make themselves familiar with the content of the parts of the Courses Handbook that concerns their own study program.

Courses Handbook

Studentweb
StudentWeb is a program that gives students and (authorized) staff access to academic administrative information through a browser. The system contains information about address, telephone number etc. for each registered student, as well as information about grades, study progress, assigned seating at exams etc. You will have your personal-password to this service. An introduction to this system will be given to all new students.

Courses and Credits

Credits Each B.Sc. or M.Sc. programme consists of a number of compulsory courses, electives, project work, a final semester project (B.Sc.) and a final semester thesis (M.Sc.). To obtain a B.Sc.s degree, you need 180 credits, while an M.Scs degree requires 120 credits. Courses are normally 5 - 15 credits. You will find detailed overview of courses and available electives in the Course Handbook (Studieomtaler): Courses Handbook

Course descriptions Each course has a specific course description, with detailed descriptions of objectives, content, tutorial means and organization, type of tests, assessments and examinations, prerequisites and recommended literature. You will find the course descriptions by clicking on the individual courses in the curriculum matrixes in the Course Handbook (Studieomtaler).

12

Work schedules By the start of each semester the course lecturer will publish a work schedule in class and in Fronter showing the course programme, number of tests, hand-ins or other course requirements, as well as types of assessments, final exams and examination aids.

Progress of study program A student may pass on to next year of study without having passed all courses from the previous year. However there are some exemptions: To start working on the 6th semester project of the B.Sc. programmes, a student must have earned a total of 135 credits (out of 150 according to normal study progress) by the end of the fifth semester. To start working on the final semester theses of the M.Sc. programmes, a student must have earned a total of 80 credits (out of a total of 90 according to normal study progress) by the end of the third semester. Please note that failing to pass one or more courses, will mean an extra workload in a following semester, or delayed graduation

Project work All B.Sc. programmes are characterized by extensive use of project based teaching and studying. The objective of this model is to teach individual students to cooperate in project groups to obtain technical as well as academic and social skills, and prepare them for "real-life situation" where project organization is widely used in industry and construction businesses. Also several M.Sc. programme courses are organized when project work.

There are formal routines to follow in a project organized course, including milestone progress, routines for submitting project reports and project presentations. There is a fixed layout for the project cover page, also in English. This is to secure that the project work is being conducted and complete in a proper manner, and that results may be registered and archived. If students or instructors fail to follow these routines, the project may be discredited and the diploma not issued. You will be given detailed information about these routines as a project organized course starts.

You should observe that all use of sources and quotations in the project reports (also Internet sources) must be listed in the list of references. If you fail to do so, this may be regarded as cheating or attempt to cheat. This is a serious offence that may lead to a student being expelled.

M.Sc. thesis The final semester thesis of the M.Sc programmes is an individual thesis where the student works independently and scientifically with a designated problem under the supervision of a senior faculty member. The thesis must be completed within 90 workdays counted from the day of the hand out of the problem.

Examinations
There is a set of formal Examination Regulations adopted by the College Board. An English translation of the Examination Regulations is included in your Welcome Folder, and is also be online. The Dean of each Faculty has the authority to add supplementary provisions to the TUC Examination Regulations. An English translations of theses supplementary provisions applying to study programs under the Faculty of Technology is in the process, and will be announced in due time before final exams of the Autumn semester. Examinations

It is important that students make themselves familiar with these regulations, as they clearly state the rights of the students as well as their obligations in order to complete examination procedures, and their rights to make formal complaints about their grades as well as their rights to lodge appeals against procedural errors during assessments or determination of grades.

In the following we have briefly outline some of the most important regulations and provisions regarding examinations.

Registration Examinations at the Faculty of Technology will normally consist of a number of tests throughout the semester, and a final written test, or project work and a project report. Other forms of assessments may apply. Check the formal course description for details. At the start of the semester the student has to confirm their Individual Education Plan in the StudentWeb system to be automatically registered for lectures and examinations in the compulsory courses of the selected study program. This will also give access to all other information available to students. The students are responsible themselves to register for the examinations in the electives or courses that are additional to or alternatives to the regular curriculum, within the set deadlines of each semester (se above under Important Dates). Registration must be done through the StudentWeb system. For any questions about examinations and registration, please contact the Exams Officer in the Service Centre, Amir Ebrahimi, Amir.Ebrahimi@hit.no

Candidate examination number The student is assigned a candidate examination number, generated in the StudentWeb system. Information regarding your assigned seating at the exams will be published in StudentWeb.

Withdrawal A student may withdraw from a scheduled exam by logging into StudentWeb and complete the withdrawal process at least 7 days prior to the examination date.

Exam schedules Final examination dates will be announced on the webside. Examination schedules

The room-and examination candidate number is published on the Studentweb only a few days prior to the examination. Dates concerning other examinations throughout the semester, such as midterm examinations, can be found on Fronter and in the plans for each subject. 14

Adjusted forms of assessment Adjusted forms of assessment for final exams, tests and assignments can be applied for non-Norwegianspeaking students (not applicable for students to programs taught in English), persons with reading or writing disabilities, disabled persons, pregnant women who require rest periods, nursing mothers or other persons who can document the need for adjusted forms of assessment. A written application must be filed. For more information, please contact Amir Ebrahimi. Special Examination Arrangements

Three attempts A student has the right to sit an Exam three times for the same course (attempts to pass or attempts to improve his grade). A legitimate leave of absence may be granted in documented cases of illness or other pressing reasons.

Please note: If a student fail to show for a schedules exam, and the student has not withdrawn (se above) or lodged for a legitimate leave of absence, the student will be considered to have used one of his three attempts.

Re-sit examinations Students who do not pass an examination may register for re-sit examination. At the Faculty of Technology re-sit examinations will normally be scheduled for the following semester (shortly before or after the scheduled ordinary Exams), provided a number of students have not passed, and at least 5 of these students request a re-sit. If a re-sit is being organised, other students who want to improve their grade, or who were granted a legitimate leave of absence from the ordinary Exam, may register for this re-sit.

Cheating Students caught cheating during an examination will be expelled for up to one year. Please note: All academic sources and quotations used in project reports (also internet sources) must be listed in the list of references. If you fail to do so, this may be regarded as cheating or attempts to cheat.

Grade system
In most cases the examination will be graded on a scale from A -F. A= excellent, B=very good, C=good, D=satisfactory, E=sufficient, F=fail. Some courses may use points or percentages as marks for tests or assessments, and only apply the letter grading system to determine the total and final examination grade. In some cases the students will earn a "Pass" or "No Pass" only, where a "Pass" indicates a result equivalent to an E or better. Grades will be published through StudenWeb, according to the assigned candidate examination number.

Diplomas/graduation
Diplomas are automatically issued to students who successfully complete a programme. If the student does not pass a course, it is up to the student to request for the Diploma to be issued upon the successful completion of courses not passed.

15

Each semester an informal Graduation Ceremony is arranged for students who have completed their Bachelor's or Master's degrees. Time and place will be announced.
