HELLO TUNES BREAK JAZZ SKILLS BREAK BALLAD HOUR JAZZ SKILLS BREAK TUNES COURSE ENDS SUNDAY 6PM HAROLD ARLEN COME RAIN OR COME SHINE OVER THE RAINBOW IVE GOT THE WORLD ON A STRING ILL WIND ONE FOR MY BABY RODGERS & HART ISNT IT ROMANTIC? MY FUNNY VALENTINE I DIDNT KNOW WHAT TIME IT WAS THIS CANT BE LOVE BEWITCHED BOTHERED AND BEWILDERED

We love jazz song, and recognise the hugely important place in the history and development of jazz of singers, from the rst itinerant singing blues guitarists through Classic Blues Singers Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith and the beautiful phrasing of Louis Armstrong, to the bittersweet interpretations of Billie Holiday, the jive bop virtuosity of the scat singers of the forties and fties, the political soul of Abbey Lincoln, the post-bop aesthetic of Mark Murphy and the exquisite time and feeling of Shirley Horn. All of these artists have with their fellow singers profoundly affected the playing of the instrumentalists around them and so have changed forever the course of the music. Playing with and for singers is a very special art - learning how to do it well will not only bring in the gigs but also immeasurably improve your all-round musicality and improvisation and ensemble skills. Hence this course, in which we call for jazz singers and singer-loving instrumentalists, frontline and rhythm section, to come and learn how to work together under the tutelage of a top professional team.

! MEET FAY WELDON

In the evening of Saturday August 9 (between 6.30 and 9.30) legendary writer Fay Weldon will be reading from her work and answering your questions about her life and writing. On Sunday August 10 (between 10.30 and 5.30) she will be leading a Dialogue Workshop for keen writers (and readers) of all levels of experience.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW...

! Format The basis of the Summer School courses, as of the regular Ensembles that we run at Jazz School UK, is the tutored playing session. You will be working in small groups (generally 5-8 in number, rhythm section plus frontline) of players of similar ability. The focus of these sessions will be the repertoire, development work and improvising skills that are essential for all jazz players. Some instrumental workshops may also be offered, depending on tutor and player numbers. These are small courses (24 players maximum) and we will be running three groups on each day, so early booking is advised to secure your place, especially in the rhythm sections. ! Preparation Summer Courses generally are a great way of getting in some serious playing time and hooking up with like-minded players, and of course, of getting valuable advice from experienced pros. On the downside, the amount of new information and repertoire on offer can be overwhelming. Players often emerge exhilarated, but strangely dispirited, nuggets of new understanding completely outweighed by what they suspect they haven't quite understood! This can lead to issues of low self-esteem and long term alcohol and chocolate abuse. Our courses are very different - we provide tune lists and recommended listening for each day's work well in advance, so that you have plenty of time to do the groundwork, and can therefore learn much more effectively when you get here. This way we combine all the buzz of the short course with maximum educational benet. ! Flexibility Come for as much or as little as you like. It's great if you can do the whole course, but as long as we can t you into a group, we're happy for you to come for a few or even single days. ! Playing level required Our Summer Course (like most others, whatever the organisers say!) really works best for players with quite a bit of instrumental, improvising and listening experience. However, if you are a strong musician with experience in other elds of music, one or two days on the Summer Course will usually work very well. If you are fairly new both to your instrument and improvising, we recommend our Beginners/Improvers course at Easter and also our regular Frodo or Sauron workshops which run monthly throughout the year - you can read more about these on our Ensembles page. ! Prices Early Bird (Booked and paid before May 1) Summer School Courses 80 (64) per day. 12.50 (10) for the Fay Weldon evening. Standard (after May 1) Summer School Courses 85 (68) per day 15 (12) for the Fay Weldon evening
