Public Health Information for EHPs Jigsaw Supports Health Psychology Network Along with our friends at RHEnvironmental and Round Window Media we recently provided You Tube coverage of two East of England Health Psychology Network meetings in Welwyn Garden City. The network is hoping to raise the prole of Health Psychology in Public Health and has attracted interest from throughout the country. Talking Social Media with UNISON Last month we were invited to talk about Social Media at the AGM of Fareham BC Unison. It was interesting to learn how local government is still restricting access to social media for their own staff despite using it to spread messages to the public.
April 2014
Happy Birthday!
April 2013 saw the return of Public Health to Local Government and here we are one year on. Im sure everyone has a view on quite what difference the change has made and how successful its been. Certainly looking in from the outside, there have been plenty of encouraging signs. Headlines about obesity, sugar content, health inequalities, alcohol pricing and plain cigarette packaging have all given public health a media presence it had struggled to achieve before. Some of that is down to Public Health England but a lot is down to the innovative approach taken by Directors of Public Health. That of course has been possible because of the allocation of a ring fenced budget and keeping that is denitely the most signicant challenge on the horizon. Budgets are also high on the agenda for those local government services who have signicant inuence over the wider determinants of health. The continual cuts to Environmental Health and Planning to name just two will have a detrimental effect on Public Health and make the DPHs job that much harder. It has been suggested that in order to have maximum effect those services should fall under the ring fenced budget which would seem a logical approach. The argument is I know something Health Watch are starting to take up. Also prominent over the last month has been an acknowledgement that global warming may have had a big inuence on recent weather events. It seems that in most areas it is also nally being accepted as a public health issue. Highlights of the last 12 months for me were interviewing Public Health England Chief Executive Duncan Selby at the Hertfordshire Public Health Conference in December and watching JIgsawPSPH continue to develop thanks to all the great support weve been given. Heres to 12 more months of progress in keeping public health on the agenda!
