Greer Idol/Teen Idol debut during Freedom Blast

BY AMANDA BRADfORD STAFF WRITER Audiences received a taste of the talent that can be expected to compete in this years Greer Idol competition during Family Fest in May, and now this Saturday at 6 p.m. during Freedom Blast, audiences will have a chance to see 26 contestants 13 adults and 13 teens compete again while singing American inspired songs. This years Greer Idol Contestants are: Hannah Clayton, Jamesia Downs, Judy Fowler, Jonathan Hannon, Kieffer Ang Mendoza, Javy Pagan, Brionah Pride, Squeaky Joe Patrick Quinn, Lauren Michelle Surkamer, Nikita Thompson, Megan Watts, Lauren Ashley Waynick and Chase Wolfe. For Clayton, being in the public eye will be nothing new. Clayton has a background in theatre and is a regular performer on channel 16 WGGS Niteline, in addition to being a member and singing at New Beginning Full Gospel Church. This fall, Clayton will be a sophomore at North Greenville University where she is studying music. Presently, Clayton has an artist contract with T3 Talent in Spartanburg. In addition to singing, she loves playing guitar and writing music. Downs, a graduate of Byrnes High School, is a lead vocalist of The Enforcers Band and in 2011 she placed third and in 2012 she placed fifth overall in the 32nd Annual Evening of Talent Expressions. Downs has been singing since she was able to talk and hopes to open her own nightclub where she can sing. For as long as she can remember, Fowler has been singing. At age 5 she began singing in church and she has competed in the Spartanburg Model Cities Talent Show, the Dodge City Country Music Showdown and sung on the Grand Ole Opry Stage, where she won third place. I mostly do gospel music, but artists that inspired me were the great Patsy Cline, of course Dolly Parton and Loretta Lynn, Fowler said. Presently, Fowler and her daughter perform together with the gospel group Mercy and Grace at nursing homes and prison ministries. In addition to singing, Fowler plays guitar and mandolin. Saturday, Fowler will sing Lee greenwoods God Bless the U.S.A. At age 13, Hannon picked up the guitar and later began performing with his churchs youth group. Recently, Hannon began incorporating

Surkamer has a four-year vocal degree from Dallas Baptist University and is a singer and songwriter. Surkamer plays piano and guitar and helps lead worship at Southside Fellowship. Thompson has sung for 11 years and was part of her church choir. Thompson and her sister sang at the Relay for Life of Travelers Rest and in high school she would compete in talent portions of pageants. Saturday she will sing Country Strong by Gwyneth Paltrow. I have been singing on and off all my life, at churches, cancer survivor dinners, as well as the Travelers Rest Relay for Life along side with my sister. Ive never sang alone, Thompson said. In the next couple months I will be singing on my husbands show Down Home Gospel, on WGGS 16. Winner of last years Greer Idol Teen, Watts will be returning this year to compete as an adult. Earlier this year, Watts performed in Charlotte, N.C. with her guitar and original songs. The past three years, Watts has been a finalist in the Nashville Connection, and this years she was also a finalist in The Best Singer in the District. At age 13, Watts released her first iTunes song, You and Me, and she presently performs in musical theater. Saturday she will be singing Travelin Soldier by the Dixie Chicks. The artists that inspire me most are Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood. They are both not only extremely talented and successful, but kind, caring, and generous within their community and around the world as well, Watts said. Watts said that after winning last year, she was eager to audition for the adult Idol this year. Waynick, a Travelers Rest High School graduate, began singing at 3-years-old and has since sung in pageants, at sporting events and on several auditioning rounds of the X Factor. Waynick plans to attend USC Upstate this fall where she will study broadcast journalism and sports management. Saturday Waynick will sing American Honey by Lady Antebellum. My friends and family encouraged me to audition and it is an amazing opportunity to showcase my talent and hopefully further my music career, Waynick said. Wolfe is a member of the Woffords a cappella group, Wofford Men. Wolfe, who recently returned from a study abroad trip to China, performed as a professional in Spartanburgs Dancing with the Stars.

I started singing when I was 7 in school choirs and started singing solos in churches and musicals shortly after. Pagan said. Some artists that have inspired me are Michael Bolton, Pink, Justin Timberlake, Luther Vandross, Adam Levine and Kelly Clarkson. Pagan will sing Walking in Memphis by Mark Cohn at this weekends Freedom Blast. Pride, winner of Greer Idol Teen in 2010, is returning this year to compete as an adult. The 17-year-old, who is a junior at Riverside High School, directs the music ministry at her church and is first soprano in her high school honor choir. Pride has been named first and second winner in Greenville Countys Best Singer in the District competition.

In order for me to best communicate what is going on in my head, I write and sing songs. I have been given breath to breathe, and I intend not to waste it, Hannon said. Mendoza began singing around age 12. In 2012, he was a finalist in Greenville Countys Best Singer in the District competition and in 2013 he competed with the Greer High School Honor Choir at the S.C. State Festival, where his choir earned third place. This weekend he will sing, If youre Reading This, by Tim McGraw. Some of my musical inspirations are the Civil Wars, David Crowder Band, Blink-182, and Owl City. And oddly, I also really enjoy Taylor Swifts music, Mendoza said. WHeReas, that commitment to both their families and communities mirrors the brave and selfless spirit of their deployed patriots; and WHeReas, military families are the ultimate support team for those who protect our freedom, as evidenced by the tears of sorrow that fall upon separation to the tears of joy that mark a homecoming; NOw, tHeRefORe, Greer City Council proclaims May 28, 2013, as Military Spouses and Families Day in the City of Greer, and encourages citizens to celebrate and support the extraordinary spouses, children, parents, and other loved ones who are heroes in their own right for their unparalleled sacrifices and unconditional support of those who defend our nation.

Salute to the Armed Forces

9:45 p.m. on the Main Stage
The City of Greer takes a few minutes following the main concert to remind everyone why Freedom is in the name of the event. The annual Salute to the Armed Forces precedes the fireworks display and is an original program on the Main Stage designed to help all in attendance remember that freedom is not free. It not only honors current members of the military, but also veterans in attendance. Freedom Blast provides a system through which the public can recognize veterans service to our country, said Preston Johnson, Commander of D.A.V. Chapter 39 in Greer. Personally, it provides me with a good feeling toward my fellow man. Come thank our heroes for their service.

hONORING OUR BRAVE

WW2 veteran looks back on war, life

bY WILLIAM BUChheIT STAFF WRITER If youre one of those who believe men were tougher back in the day, Jim Wrights life would support your claim. The 94-year-old keeps a scrapbook of old photos and commemorative certificates in the Greer home he built 63 years ago. At least four of these are documents he received for Perfect Attendance as a middle school student in Clifton. In fact, Wright missed just one day of school from 1930-1934. Without a doubt, his stout constitution and stunning mental toughness have served him well throughout his nine-plus decades on earth, just as they did in the Pacific theatre of World War II. Wright was born in Clifton back in 1919 to a mother who gave birth to 11 children (5 died during infancy) and a father who delivered mail from a horse and buggy. He never got to know one of his grandfathers, who drowned in the infamous Spartanburg Flood of 1904. He joined the workforce early, and says he didnt have time to play high school sports because he was too busy shining shoes after school at his uncles barbershop. The cost of a shoeshine in those days was a nickel. After graduation, he began working full time at Clifton Manufacturings #2 mill. But in August 1942, he was drafted into the Army and sent to Camp Wolters (Texas) for basic training. I was at Fort Jackson four days and then went to Camp Wolters, Wright recalls. Then I went to Camp Stoneman in California and we got on an old duck ship and went to New Caledonia. Then we went to Guadalcanal and joined the outfit there. That was in January of 1943, just as the Americans were taking control of the tropical Solomon Island where over 7,000 US troops had died. In March of that year, Wrights father died of a heart attack at age 70. The young soldier didnt receive word of his passing until nearly six months later. By then, action was heavy in the Pacific. Wrights company suffered mass casualties on the Philippine island of Cebu.

They (enemy forces) would

almost always let the [first scout] go through and hit about the fourth man in the patrol. The first scout would hardly ever get shot at.
Jim Wright
There was a Watson guy from Saxon (SC), he got killed. The Japs got him, recalls Wright. He and I would have to go down at night to get the water and supplies, and the Japs got in his hole while he was gone and knifed him when he got back in. Wright says he was almost killed in combat himself when an enemy soldier charged him. Thankfully for him, it turned out the Japanese soldiers gun was unloaded. That man was one of two known kills Wright made in the war. He chased down another Japanese soldier inside a cave and emptied an entire clip on him. It was him or me, he says. Early in his service, Wright was appointed first scout of his platoon, meaning that he would be the first soldier to penetrate enemy lines during a mission. Ironically, the veteran says being first was a safer position than that of the soldiers following him. They (enemy forces) would almost always let the [first scout] go through and hit about

the fourth man in the patrol. The first scout would hardly ever get shot at, Wright explains. Following the fighting in Cebu, Wright and crew traveled to Bougainville, another province in New Guineas Solomon Islands that the Japanese had taken over early in the war. After enduring another extended period of fierce fighting, Australian forces relieved the US troops and Wright and his company headed back to Guadalcanal. Days later, the troops were informed theyd be heading to Japan. Wright was admitted to the hospital suffering from jaundice and malaria. It was a blessing in disguise, as hospital staff informed him he had accumulated enough points to earn an honorable discharge and return to America. [The army] tried to get me to re-enlist right after I got discharged but I told them I was through with it, he said. So in 1945, nearly four years after he was sent to Camp Wolters, Wright headed home to Clifton and was back at work within a month. In 1948, two important things happened. He mar-

In the Great War, he earned several honors, including a service medal, Philippines Liberation ribbon and a bronze arrowhead made on the beachhead of Cebu. But the fact that he is just as proud of his perfect school attendance awards should not go unnoticed. It illustrates that his toughness and commitment were acquired early in life, and those virtues have served him well, both during his brave military service and throughout his long life.

Offer thanks for your independence

The role of the brave men and women who serve in the military is an important one, and its one that warrants appreciation and celebration. The following are a few easy ways to celebrate veterans and their significant contribution to our country this Fourth of July. Offer your thanks. Serving in the military can feel like a thankless job, as those who have not served might not be aware of the risks men and women in the military take and the sacrifices they must make to protect our country and help the less fortunate across the globe. As a result, something as simple as saying Thank you to a current service member or military veteran can go a long way. Veterans know they dont serve in vain, but its still a great idea to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts and sacrifices. Help families of active military. Many service members are currently stationed and serving overseas, and their families back home may need or just appreciate a helping hand. Invite family members of active military over for dinner, offer to do chores like cutting the grass or shoveling the driveway when it snows or help around the house if something needs fixing. Even if families of active members serving overseas appear to be getting along great, offer your friendship and let them know youre there to help should anything arise. Visit hospitalized veterans. Unfortunately, many veterans are hospitalized after suffering an injury during a tour of duty. These veterans sacrificed their physical well-being to protect our way of life, and many spend extended peri-

ods of time in the hospital. Visiting a hospital to get to know a veteran and spend some time with him or her, sharing a few laughs and thanking them for their service, is a great way to celebrate the holiday and lift a veterans spirits at the same time. Recruit friends and family members to visit hospitalized veterans as well. Pay for a veterans night out on the town. Like many people, veterans appreciate an escape from the daily grind. Men and women who want to show their appreciation to veterans can treat a veteran to a night out on the town. Have extra tickets to a ball game or play? Donate them to a local VFW. Or if you see a veteran out on the town, offer to pay for his meal. Thank businesses who support veterans. When a local business shows its appreciation to veterans, patronize that business and let them know you appreciate their efforts to help veterans.

Dos and donts of fireworks

As the mercury rises, the parties and festivities that have come to signify summer excite revelers far and wide. Summer has become the season of pool parties, trips to the beach, barbecues, and, of course, fireworks. Love it or hate it, warm weather seems to beckon neighbors out of hibernation and incites a desire to set things on fire. When cooking over an open flame doesnt satisfy that desire, many take to shooting off bottle rockets and whistlers. But fireworks can still be dangerous, and not everyone is equipped or legally allowed to ignite fireworks. Therefore, to avoid potentially dangerous injuries, fines or arrests, it pays to follow these fireworks dos and donts. DO check any safety guidelines and warnings on the wrapper of the fireworks before lighting them. DONT light fireworks near people, trees, homes, or any combustible materials. DO keep a fire extinguisher or water hose nearby in the event of a fire. The National Fire Prevention Association notes that the Fourth of July features more reported fires than any other day of the year. DONT forget that sparklers and firecrackers are no safer than other types of fireworks. The tip of a sparkler burns at a temperature of more than 1200 F, which is hot enough to cause thirddegree burns and is hotter than the temperature it takes to melt glass. DO leave fireworks to the professionals to avoid injury or fire. DONT light more than one firework at a time. DO wait 15 to 20 minutes after lighting a firework to see if it has ignited. If not, dump the firework in a bucket of water and move on to a fresh firework. DONT let small children handle and light fireworks. DONT have any part of your body over the firework when lighting it. Try to use a lit stick or butane lighter to keep as far away as possible. DO say no to alcoholic beverages when lighting fireworks. Your perception and dexterity can be compromised by alcohol. DO make sure spectators keep their distance. They should be 25 to 40 feet away from groundbased items and even further for aerial ones.
