Dear Parents,

Today has been a great, but busy day! Please allow me to include my speech for the special assembly for Filipiniana instead of a
regular Friday Bulletin Post.
Mabuhay and Good Afternoon
It is my privilege to provide a few closing remarks to what has been an amazing assembly!
I would like to endorse Jonathan’s opening remarks, welcoming everyone to Filipiniana 09. I would like to particularly thank you all
for your involvement this year, in what has been a slightly different Filipiniana program, Bayanihan sa ISM. Bayanihan often refers
to the Filipino spirit of unity and cooperation and it has been said that in times of calamities, the Filipino bayanihan spirit never
fails to surface. You can see it everywhere. This was especially true in ISM’s case, as a school we mobilized into action to support
three different groups of people: our own severely impacted ISM employees, both contracted and non-contracted, and those whose
lives were destroyed in the communities that PCF and the Papaya Academy support.
I stand before you today very proud and very humbled in being ably to briefly report back on what we have achieved over the last
few weeks. Through the following efforts we have achieved a tremendous amount. Through direct donations of goods, cash and
labor, through our student organized “Singing in the Rain Benefit Concert” and subsequent free dress day, through IASAS tee shirt
and gatorade sales, through today’s Filipiniana event and with other events planned such as the Fine Arts Council’s upcoming
silent art auction
We have raised approximately US $ 55 000 in cash and much much more in donations in kind. We have to date already disbursed
with immediate relief worth approx US $30 000. In addition a decision was made this week to give a direct cash donation of US $
6000 to both PCF and Papaya Academy for them to use as they see fit on rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. The remainder
of the fund will be used for ISM staff on an application basis.
What you may not realize is that a major reason we were able to respond so quickly in the days immediately after Typhoon Ondoy
was due to PCC and Filipiniana. For some years now the proceeds/profits from ISM’s Filipiniana have been banked into the ISM
disaster relief fund. Having resources available from day one was instrumental in being able to meet the needs of our partner
service learning organizations. Also central to our efforts was the relationships we have built with these service learning
organizations. We trusted them and they trusted us. In PCF’s case their truck comes every night to collect ISM’s waste so that they
can use it to sustain a livelihood.
I commented last year that days like this in the school calendar are wonderful examples of school and community working
together. This comment seems even more appropriate this year, post Typhoon Ondoy. As a school we have done well but there is
always so much more we can do and I strongly encourage everyone to keep up the magnificent effort.
In making this day a success there has been a tremendous amount of work done by PCC. This was more difficult than usual as PCC
took the courageous decision to refocus this year’s event towards heroism within the community. I want to publicly acknowledge
the work done by Jonathan Fong and Jimmy Go and the PCC. I would also like to thank the support of all who have helped
especially our gracious and kind sponsors and the donations they have made.
Our own ISM mission aims to build a community of reflective learners who are passionate, caring and responsible contributors to
the world in which we live.” In addition one of our 5 school wide student goals states that we expect students to work to the best
of their ability to be: Responsible, caring and ethical contributors: who can empathize and be tolerant of difference and are
committed to make a positive impact on their communities and environment. Last year I asked the following questions: are you
living out our school’s mission, are you making a positive contribution to our community? This year the answer is an unequivocal
YES!
Again congratulations to PCC on a great Bayanihan sa ISM 2009
Enjoy the Filipino cuisine and have a well earned and restful holiday.

Please donate your glossy magazines to PCF!

WHY?
Glossy Magazines cannot be pulped and recycled like regular clean paper here in Manila so if you don’t ensure that they’re made into
something else… they just end up in a land fill.
WHAT does PCF do with them?
Parents of the school children are employed to make beads out of them which, in turn, get made into jewellery and bags.
HOW does this help families?
The money from the products generates income for them so that they can afford to buy food and clothes for their children.
WHERE?
Collection boxes can be found in ES, MS and HS offices

Thank you for your support!
