You are on page 1of 10

For this example we are going to spray a popcorn ceiling.

The first step is to cover up everything you Do Not want painted!. Move the furniture away from the wall 3' or so and cover with lightweight plastic. emove or mas! light fixtures" move all pictures" mirrors etc to another room and cover the floor with dropcloths" canvas or disposa#le paper dropcloths" availa#le at your paint store or home #ldg center. $f the walls are not going to #e repainted you will need to mas! them off using lightweight plastic or 3' wide #rown craft paper.

%hen you pic!up your spray unit from the paint store or rental store as! for an &extension& for the gun. These simply screw onto the gun allowing you extended reach and eliminating ladders" 'ery (andy. Mix all your paint into the ) gallon pail" insert the dip tu#e from the pump into the #uc!et or fill the hopper depending on which unit type you have" ma!e sure all your fittings are tight. Now" all units have two control !no#s" a pressure control and a pump*recirculate !no#. $n the recirculate mode the paint simply recirulates thru the unit" pumping out trapped air and allows the pump to prime. Turn the !no# to recirculate and turn on the power switch. +llow the pump to run for , minutes or so and it will prime and push out any trapped air. Now we are going to ad-ust the pressure. The #iggest mista!e most people" even some professionals" is spraying with too much pressure. .ou need -ust enough pressure to create an even fan with no &tails& which are thic! lines at the edge of the spray pattern. /ac!out the pressure !no# and screw it in a#out 0*3rd of the way 1screwing in increases pressure2" point the gun at the surface to #e painted or a piece of card#oard for testing and with your hand in motion" pull the trigger. 3ind of scary isn't it :-) 4ee" no #ig deal...... Now that the initial fear factor is gone lets do it again and this time pay attention to the edge of the fan. $f you see a thic! stream at the edge of the fan increase the pressure 0*5 turn at a time until the tail is gone. Now you have the proper amount of pressure for the material you are spraying. Techni6ue!!! 7very time you pull the trigger you must follow the same routine. emem#er that the second you pull the trigger the paint comes out instantly so" start your hand in motion first and then pull the trigger" release the trigger -ust #efore you reach the stopping point of your swing. $n a#out 08 minutes you will have it down to a science" -ust remem#er... hand in motion" pull trigger" spray" release trigger" stop hand motion. 4hould you mess up and load an area with too much paint simply ta!e a #rush and spread it out.

Maximum transfer of paint is accomplished #y holding the gun at the proper distance from the surface to #e painted. Too close and you apply too much paint" too far away and you introduce a lot of spray into the air as it is not hitting the surface. This distance varies and depends on the amount of pressure you are using and the viscosity of the paint so experiment until you find the proper distance" normally 0,& or so is a#out right. +s in all painting -o#s start with the difficult areas" where you would &cut in& and leave the large mass areas for the end. 9n a ceiling for example" spray up next to the edge first" near the wall and then spray out towards the center. 9n walls you want to start at the door and window openings spraying away from the opening and out towards the large area of the wall. $ cut pieces of card#oard a#out 0,& wide an 3' long and use them as a shield holding them up against the areas $ want to protect. cut several and when they #ecome loaded with paint lay them aside to dry and you can reuse them later. $ts a good idea to !eep a #uc!et of clean water and a sponge handy too" you are going to slip up and overspray onto something you don't want painted and this way you can clean it easily. %hen you have finished #e sure and clean the e6uipment up" most rental places charge a pretty hefty cleaning charge if you return the unit dirty. :ut the dip tu#e into a clean #uc!et of water" #ac! off on the pressure and put the gun into the ) gallon pail of paint holding the tip -ust under the surface of the paint. The line has a#out 0 6t of paint in it and you can push it through with water. +s soon as you see the water coming out release the trigger" move the gun over to the #uc!et of water again holding the tip -ust under the surface" and pump the water for a#out ,;3 minutes. Dump the water repeat the process until the water runs clean. Normally 3;5 rinses are necessary. Power OFF! Trigger the gun to release the pressure " clean off the exterior of the gun with a wire #rush" remove the tip" clean it well and replace it. /e sure and replace the filters #efore returning the unit if you removed them earlier. $ thin! you will agree that an airless is not only a great time saver #ut also a very efficient way to apply paint resulting in a very uniform evenly distri#uted paint film.

The walls of your home are bright white, right? Or some unsightly color that needs a change? And instead of seeing them as the perfect blan canvases to create a masterpiece, you see them as a laborious assignment you must tac le in order to improve the loo of your decor! "i e the rest of us you probably do everything to liven up your home#hang pictures, throw down a rug or two$ everything e%cept ta ing on what you believe will be the intolerable tas of painting! This is understandable! &ecause there is so much conflicting information out there about painting you li ely don't now what to listen to! (ell fret no longer! )ou have stopped on the right page! *ere you will receive some of the best tips that will ma e painting your interior walls as painless as possible! First Things First (What You'll Need) The supplies you'll need to adequately paint your walls are as follows+ ,isposable rubber gloves -#inch flat brush .mall angled brush to paint the trim and/or corners 0ewspapers, plastic or a canvas drop cloth to protect floors from paint spills and splatter The blue painter's tape that won't ta e paint off with it when you remove it .pac le 1to fill in holes and imperfections on the wall2 Putty nife .andpaper 1to sand down the spac le to a smooth, 3paintable3 surface2 Turpentine 1for oil#based paint2 Pail to wash out your brushes 4leaning rags Paint 5oller with e%tension rod to reach tall walls and ceilings Paint tray Primer Pick Your Paint 6n order to pic your paint you must first figure out how much of the stuff you are going to need! To do this, measure the square footage of the walls you plan to paint! Paint cans are labeled with the amount of square footage they contain in their cans, so bring along the measurements to the paint store and match them up with each other! O ay, so you now how much paint you need$ now, what type of paint do you need to buy? There are essentially two types of paint you should choose from+ "ate%#based paint and Oil#based paint! The easiest to wor with is late%#based 1acrylic2 paint! 6t can go on walls, floors, and wood and metal surfaces! 6t is also the easiest to clean up$ when you need to clean out your paintbrushes or if some late% paint gets on your s in, a little bit of soap and water will do the tric !

On the other hand, oil#based paint 1al yd#based2 is harder to clean up and needs a solvent#li e turpentine in order to wash out your paintbrushes and clean the paint off your s in! A plus is that oil# based paint is stain#resistant and adheres to walls and ceilings very nicely! This ma es oil#based paint a really good choice to use in your bathrooms and itchens! Find A Finish 0ow that you've pic ed your paint, you need to decide on a paint finish! Paints and finishes match up in color, so whichever paint color you select get the finish color that matches it! The types of finishes+ 7lat finish+ This finish is the most commonly used! 6t is good for large surfaces, and will not reflect light! 6t is recommend to be used on ceilings, and in bedrooms, living rooms and dining rooms! 0ot itchens and baths! 8loss finish+ This finish will always reflect light, especially on walls and ceilings and is often used in small quantities 1such as on trim2! .atin or eggshell finish+ This finish is terrific for brightening up hallways, common areas, and children's bedrooms and playrooms! 6t can be used anywhere that a slight sheen is wanted! .emi#gloss finish+ This finish is easy to clean, which means it is great to use in high#traffic areas such as in itchens, bathrooms, on doors, etc! Choose The Color 0ever an easy choice to ma e! 9ost of us choose a paint color based on a mood or to mimic a photograph we've seen in the glossy pages of a maga:ine! .o let's begin with the basics+ White. 6f you choose white, you aren't limited to a boring palate! )ou can still wor within its various color shades! Off#whites, crmes and beiges will bring the same bigger feel to your room that a bright white will, and no matter what shade of white, it still the best bet as the bac ground color to your dynamic decor! Red. 6f you'd li e something more bold and vibrant in your room color, red is a pretty good choice! 9aybe not for an entire room, but putting a nice deep red color on an accent wall will give your room dramatic pause! 6f you aren't for drama in your room, s ip the red! Blue. )ou thin blue and you thin serenity! &lue is a good harmonic choice for almost any room, especially bathrooms! 6n your bedroom, it offers the feeling of peace and softness! Too much blue can ma e your room feel cold! Black. )ou li ely never even considered this paint color, right? 6mages of a rebellious teen dressed in full blac regalia, donning the latest in goth ma eup and listening to heavy metal probably come to mind when you thin of a blac paint on a wall! Although most people will tell you to never paint your walls blac , in moderation blac could actually be pretty darn cool! )ou can use blac paint on a wall behind your bed as a replacement for a gaudy headboard and ta e a minimalist approach to your room! *owever, 6'd say never paint an entire wall blac unless you've got something strong in contrast to

place against it or hang on it! A white and blac combination on a wall does wonders, especially if you are going for a dramatic effect! Tip+ wor in warm colors too 1e%plained below2 with accent pillows, curtains, and furniture to ta e the edge off this very 3in your face3 paint color! Other common paint colors include yellow, orange, green and violet! &ut to sum it all up, the basic tenets of choosing your paint color are as follows+ The deep 3warm3 colors such as reds, oranges, and yellows will produce a co:y room feeling! The light shades, which are your 3cool3 colors such as green, blue, and violet, will ma e a room feel more open! (hite will also give off this feeling! Select A Shade There's nothing worse than selecting a shade of paint that loo s great under fluorescent lamps in a home improvement store only to find out later that you've brought an entirely different shade home with you! That's why the best way to select a paint shade is to loo at how the color shows under different lighting sources+ natural and synthetic! )our synthetic light is whatever bulb wattage you use in your lighting fi%tures! )ou can avoid ma ing costly mista es with selecting a paint shade by getting samples of the paints you want, and then using them to paint large sheets of white poster board! )ou will use these painted poster boards as large, 3real world3 samples that you can prop up against the walls you plan on painting! 9a e sure you critique these poster boards samples throughout the day in order to see how the color shade will loo in different light! The poster samples will also give you a sense of how your room will loo when it is painted a particular shade and filled with furniture! A word to the wise+ deeper paint colors distort more with lighting changes than pastel ones! Choose Your Paint rushes and Paint Rollers This is actually not a hard choice to ma e! )ou'll need both a paint roller and a paintbrush! The paint roller will ma e paint go faster and puts paint on the wall easier! Of course a roller cannot reach into corners and adequately paint trim and unusual surfaces, so this is where your paintbrush will come in handy! Paintbrushes are good for touch up ;obs too! Avoid using natural#bristle paintbrushes if you're using late%#based paint! 0atural bristles become limp when they absorb water! 6nstead, use synthetic bristles and rollers for the ;ob! 7or e%ample, nylon 1good for rollers2 is abrasion#resistant, and polyester brushes retain their stiffness in water and will maintain their shape! 0atural#bristles paintbrushes are best to apply oil#based paint! And use a lamb's wool roller! A -#inch or <#inch straight#edged brush will handle the general surfaces of your painting pro;ect! A =#inch brush is good to cut#in corners! And an angled sash brush, >3 to = >/=3 wide, is a good choice for painting trim, around window frames and moldings! To achieve the best#loo ing paint ;ob you can, you need to use quality brushes! A quality brush has a wooden handle with long, tapered bristles 1bristles that are a bit longer in the center than at the edges2 that are attached to the handle with epo%y cement instead of glue! The bristles should also have flagged, or split, ends, which is ideal for holding paint and spreading paint equally, smoothly, and with fewer brush mar s left on the surface you are trying to paint!

Co!"ort 0ever purchase a paintbrush without first testing it out! Ta e the paintbrush into your hands and mimic painting a wall! ,oes the paintbrush feel comfortable in your hand and not aw ward or heavy? 5emember that you will have to paint your wall with this brush#so ma e sure the paintbrush is springy, too! Pile #e$th 5ollers come in different pile depths! The pile depth refers to the thic ness of the cover's fiber nap on a roller! 6t is essential to choose the right pile depth for the surface you plan to paint! 6n general, a roller with a smoother pile should be used on smoother surfaces, and the rougher piles used on rougher surfaces 1to better reach those hard#to#reach areas2! *ere's a brea down of what pile depth you should use on what surface+ 7or metal doors and plaster#?ery .mooth pile depth 7or drywall#.mooth or .emi#.mooth pile depth 7or rough wood and acoustic tile#.emi#5ugged pile depth 7or te%tured ceilings and stucco finishes#5ugged pile depth 7or concrete bloc , bric and fences#?ery 5ugged pile depth The Pre$ Work (%etting The Roo! Read& For Painting) >! 7irst, clear all the furniture from the room, as much as possible! The furniture that can't be removed should be positioned in the center of the room and covered with a plastic or canvas tarp! 9a e sure that the furniture is completely covered, even the legs! =! 0e%t, cover the floor with drop cloths, tarps and/or newspapers! -! 0ow, remove all pictures, artwor and mirrors from the walls! <! 6f you painting the ceiling, ta e down light fi%tures @! 5emove all outlet and light switch covers! When 'orking 'ith $re(iousl& $ainted sur"aces) >! Ase a mild grease#cutting cleanser to wash down your walls! 6t is important to remove any dirt, grease and stains so that the paint can adhere to your walls properly! =! 5inse the wall very well! -! 5emove loose paint with sandpaper! <! .pac le holes by spreading a thin layer into each with a putty nife! "eave to dry 1at least a few hours2 then sand gently! @! 5un sandpaper over glossy or nonporous surfaces to help the paint stic better to the wall! (ipe or vacuum away any dust! 6! Apply primer! Primers allow the paint to grip to the wall better and longer! This means your

primer will seal the wall and produce a nonporous surface for the topcoat to stic to! 5emember to tint the primer to your chosen color by adding a small amount of the paint color to the primer! Ste$* &*Ste$ +nstructions to Painting Your Walls Ste$ ,) 6f you are painting your ceilings as well as your walls, paint the ceiling first! Allow them to dry for at least =< hours! 6f you are only painting the walls, go to .tep =! Ste$ -) Asing your painter's tape, cover the edge of the ceiling to prevent splattering and protect the trim! Ste$ .) 0ow cover the baseboards and whatever trim not being painted with tape! Ste$ /) Paint a =#inch strip with a small brush along the top of the wall##where the wall and ceiling ;oin! Ste$ 0) 6mmediately paint over the cut#in with your roller to eep the paint from drying and leaving a line on the wall! Ste$ 1) Apply paint to the wall in square#si:ed sections! (ith an up and down and across motion, apply a generous coat of paint to the wall! This style will prevent lines when the paint dries! Ste$ 2) Once the first coat has dried apply another coat! 5epeat the above steps for all walls that need to be painted! Should You 3se The S$ra& Techni4ue to Paint Your +nterior Walls5 The plus side of spray#painting your walls is it's the least costly painting method of the three methods#brush, roller and spray! 6t is also the fastest way to apply paint to your walls, and you can cover a large area in a small amount of time, especially if the surface to be painted is more irregular than not! )ou can buy an airless spray rig 1a pumping unit, hose and a gun2! An airless spray rig forces paint through a very small tip, which brea s up the paint into different si:e spray pattern fans! The benefit of airless spraying is there is little chance of over spray because air isn't forcing the paint out, which means the room doesn't become overrun with paint mist! 6n general, unless you are a professional painter the spray method is better suited for e%terior painting! The spray painting technique must be e%ecuted very carefully! *owever, if you thin you can handle the ;ob and choose to ta e the interior spraying challenge on, you must ma e sure that you cover your windows, doors and flooring, you have plenty of ventilation, and you wear long sleeves, goggles and a mas before you start painting! Ti$s) Paint a small test spot on your wall or surface before ta ing on the entire wall! 8ive yourself time to become comfortable with your rig! Point the spray gun directly at the wall! 9ove the gun in an up and down motion, always moving the painting gun parallel to the surface being painted! 6f paint begins to run you may be holding the gun too close to surface or wall! Beep a consistent

spraying technique to give your wall the best painting ;ob you can!
