Subject Areas of Particular Interest
All courses offered by Loughborough College are open to adult learners. The course listings show entry qualification details and once you start, your Progress Tutor will assist and support you. This symbol indicates that the course has been identified as 'adult friendly' and meets the following criteria: Delivered within school hours or outside the working day Studying on the course should not affect eligibility for state benefits Flexible entry requirements and prior learning/experience is taken into account The course has a history of successful outcomes for adult students The course has previously met adult students' expectations

Experience Counts
If you are over 21 at the start of the course and don't have the formal qualifications for entry, you will be expected to provide evidence of your motivation to study and any relevant experience. Simply apply for your chosen course following the usual procedures. We appreciate that you may not have the necessary formal qualifications for entry and therefore most courses will take account of your skills and experience to date when considering your application. When we receive your application, we will invite you to come to the College for an informal interview. At this interview the tutor will discuss your prior learning and experience with you. If the tutor feels that you have sufficient relevant skills to start on the course, you will be offered a place. The tutor may feel you would benefit from additional study before commencing your chosen course. They may recommend an Access to Higher Education programme.

Access to Further Education (FE)

These courses are specifically aimed at adults who want to return to learning. The programmes are designed to fill gaps in your key skills and are made available at times and locations to suit you. You could also be eligible for an Adult Learning Grant (ALG) of up to 30 a week if your course leads to a Level 2 qualification (please contact the Student Welfare Team for more specific information on 01509 618211). Taking up these opportunities could lead to better employability or progression onto further education. See Access to Further Education for more details of courses offered.

The Access to Higher Education programme is designed specifically for this purpose. It is a widely accepted entry qualification for degree level study. The Loughborough College Access programme is modular and offers you a choice of routes to higher education, degree or professional courses. Access courses assume no prior knowledge and have no formal entry qualifications. Whichever route you choose, it will include study skills and a strong element of individual student support. See Access to Higher Education for more details of courses offered.

Formal Qualifications for Direct Entry

You may feel that the best option for you is to take additional formal qualifications before you start on your course. This prospectus shows you the wide range of vocational and academic courses available at different levels. These can enable you to gain the qualifications you need for your next stage of study.

The College has also worked with Leicester Tigers Rugby Club to launch a major community health and fitness initiative, as well as on the education programme for its academy scholars. The college is situated on the same campus and works in close partnership with Loughborough College. This ensures that students have a highly supportive environment of a specialist college together with fully supported access to the varied courses available at Loughborough College.

Links with Other Organisations

Loughborough University As well as adjoining campuses and a joint students' union, Loughborough College enjoys close links with the university. Regular liaison ensures that opportunities for joint initiatives can be pursued and ultimately the students of both institutions benefit. For example, Loughborough University guarantees Loughborough College 'Access to HE' students an interview for entry onto any of its undergraduate programmes. For College HND students the university also offers a range of progression opportunities. The profile of Loughborough as a centre of sporting excellence is also high on the agenda for collaboration.

Further advice is available from the Student Welfare Centre on 01509 618211. Many of the courses offered in this prospectus are made up of modular units of study, which can be selected for part-time study. This way the full qualification can be taken over a period of time without affecting your availability for work. When you gain employment you may be able to continue the course as most of the modules are also offered on a day and evening basis.

Examination and Registration Fees

The College pays examination and registration fees (except re-sits) for students under 19 who have demonstrated real commitment to their work and who have a realistic chance of success in their exams. Our Courses Continued

General Vocational Qualifications
These are courses which support learners in the development of skills, knowledge and understanding related to a general occupational area. The programmes include the development of Key Skills such as Communications, Application of Number and IT. Work placement may be an integral part of the programme. Assessment is mainly through coursework, though there are tests or examinations in some of the courses. The courses are available at NQF Levels 1, 2 and 3. Learners may start at any level, depending on their previous qualifications and experience. At the end of a course, a learner may progress to the next level, or to employment. The Level 3 qualifications allow progression to higher education. For those who are unsure about the vocational area they would like to enter as a career, and who need to develop more underpinning skills to support their learning, our Foundation Programme, or Entry to Employment may provide the right opportunity. Level 1 General Vocational Qualifications These include the BTEC Introductory and GNVQ Foundation Awards. They are designed to support the development of personal skills and attributes needed to build confidence in the ability to work, learn and achieve in the occupational area. Level 2 General Vocational Qualifications These include the BTEC First Diploma and GNVQ Intermediate Awards, both of which are roughly equivalent to four good GCSEs. They support the further development of skills, knowledge and understanding within an occupational area. Those who are dissatisfied with their school GCSE results should seriously consider taking one of these qualifications as a more stimulating and interesting alternative to re-takes. An additional GCSE may be taken alongside the vocational programme if appropriate. Level 3 General Vocational Qualifications These include the BTEC National qualifications and the Vocational A-Levels (formerly VCEs), which develop higher level vocational skills, knowledge and understanding. Many of our learners use these qualifications as an entry to higher education. The BTEC Nationals are available (depending on the subject) as 6, 12, or 18 unit qualifications. The 18 unit National Diploma is equivalent to three A-Levels, the 12 unit National Certificate is equivalent to two A-Levels, and the 6unit National Award is equivalent to one A-Level. Vocational A-levels can be studied at AS and A-Level, and as a single award (one AS or A-Level), or double award (two AS or A-Levels). An additional GCSE, AS or A-Level may be taken alongside these qualifications, if appropriate.

Foundation Degree
Foundation degrees are two year qualifications which can lead on to the final year of an honours degree or into employment.

HND (Higher National Diploma)

A Higher National Diploma is awarded by BTEC. This qualification is a widely recognised higher education qualification, normally regarded as comparable to the first two years of a degree course. HND courses generally have a more vocational or practical approach than a degree course. An HND will probably take you two years to complete. The College's Higher Education Prospectus gives full details of HND opportunities.

NVQ Levels 1-5

NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. This qualification combines both theory and practice and is designed to reflect real standards of work performance. You are awarded an NVQ when you can prove that you can actually do a job, not just write or talk about it. There are five levels of NVQ. Level 1 reflects basic/craft level skills and at the other end of the scale, Level 5 reflects professional/senior management skills. To get an NVQ you need to prove that you can perform tasks to set standards at work or in a realistically simulated work environment. Previous learning and work experience can be taken into account through 'Accreditation of Prior Learning' (APL). Training for NVQs is offered in units which can be assessed separately or as part of a complete programme. There is no set time during which training and assessment must take place.

HNC
HNCs are available for part-time study and are normally considered equivalent to the first year of a degree. The College's part-time guide and HE Prospectus give further details.

Other Study Opportunities

In addition to further education, Loughborough College offers a range of other training and education opportunities. Hospitality & Catering

This fast growing industry continues to demand the talented and well-trained students that Loughborough College teaches. Many of our students can look forward to progressing well in the industry, often while they study. The high standards of students have been recognised by a string of high profile competition successes at regional and national level. A new training restaurant will be open by autumn 2006 with new facilities in the first of two new buildings at the College.

Case Study
Emma Barrett has studied NVQ Specialist Pastry courses through to Level 4. Her medal winning souffls have been part of the College's outstanding success in prestigious cookery competitions around the country. The College has gained a reputation for achieving competition success against very stiff competition. 'The mixture of nerves and excitement at a competition is hard to describe. All you can do is try as hard as you can on the day, and it was fantastic to win several merits and gold medals. Another highlight was helping celebrity TV chef Phil Vickery demonstrate some dishes at a Chef Academy.'

Case Study
Kelly Jones has completed the first year of a BTEC National Diploma in Sports Studies. She lives in Trowbridge and chose Loughborough College because of its reputation as a Centre of Vocational Excellence. The Netball Academy was also a big draw. As she is 17 years old, Kelly has a room in the College's modern accommodation, the 'Gables' situated a five minute walk from the campus. 'It's brilliant in the Gables. We have a warden to look after us and everyone's part of a big community - we have some good social events. I live in a flat with three people on the course. Some people I study with are international athletes. I hope to get a place at university, perhaps Loughborough or Bath, to study physiotherapy or personal training. I recommend the College to anyone - it's a brilliant experience!'
