FORGET ME NOTS STORY-TELLING WORKBOOK

The Giant Hen

1. Listen/Tell the story
In the library find the book The Giant Hen. The teacher will read an extract from the book
(pp. 2 - 5).
What were the animals and plants like a long time ago? Which animal was the best
loved? What was the name of the biggest hen in the world? In which country did she live?

2. Make
Glue together several sheets of paper. You have now a large surface for your drawing.
Together draw the giant hen. You can draw it and colour it. You can also make a giant
hen from old newspapers or coloured paper.

3. Listen/Play
The teacher will read the next extract of the story (pp. 6 - 9). Talk about what happens to
the giant hen in winter and about the games she plays with the children. What did the hen
do when the countryside was covered by snow? Who looked after her?
4. Listen/Tell the story/Draw a picture
Listen to the story of how people got the hen out of the cave (pp. 11 - 13).
Tell the story of the rescue action. Did the hen repay the people for their kindness?
Draw a picture of the hen and the children at play.

5. Make up a story.
Tell the story
- of the hen taking children over a busy road
- of the hen who knew how to bake the most delicious cakes
- of the hen who changed into a childrenʼs playground slide

6. Tell/Draw
The
hen
helped
people,
protected
them
and
played
with
the
children.
Who

you?

Who

takes
care
of
you?
Who
plays
with
you?

Draw.

7. Listen/Tell the story/Circle
Listen to the next extract of the story (pp. 15 - 17). Explain how the hen behaved with its
egg. At which point did she become most annoyed? What was the reason?
Circle the names of the animals that lay eggs:

hen rabbit duck pigeon rat

People
used
a
huge
earthworm
to

length
was
the

Has

such
a
huge
earthworm?

Why
did
people
make
a
big
fire?
What
did
they
want
to
roast?

Who
peered
out
of
the
eggshell?
What
did
the

do
after
that?

and

9. Tell/Make
The
hen
and
the

left
the
country
and
went
who

where.

Tell
a
story:

In
which
country
would
the
hen
and
her
chick
live
happily?

Describe
this
country:

What
kind
of
things
are
to
be
found
in
plenty
in
this
country?

In
what
ways
is
a
fairy‐tale
land
different
from
other
lands?

From
scraps
of
paper
and
boxes
make
a
