Lesson Plan Unit 4, Day 2 HEADING Karen Guarino Geometry Introduction to Triangles and Congruency OVERVIEW/ RATIONALE The

purpose of this lesson, the 2nd one in this mini-unit, is to have student investigate the exterior angle theorem and review the triangle sum theorem. These concepts and theorems are important components of geometry, and by exploring these ideas, my hope is that students will come to a deeper understanding of their value and where they come from. ENDURING UNDERSTANDINGS/ ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS 65 Minutes

What are properties of triangles that make them unique?

GOALS/OBJECTIVES Students will be able to identify/create special triangles and understand what makes them unique. They will also be reminded of the Triangle Sum Theorem and explore the Exterior Angle theorem. They will be able to recall and apply these theorems to solve problems. STANDARDS

28 B Identify/define/draw different types of triangles (obtuse, scalene, isosceles, equilateral, right) 29 D Use triangle theorems to solve algebraic problems (triangle sum, exterior angle, isosceles, equilateral)
Practices: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Attend to precision. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. MATERIALS PowerPoint presentation, Days1&2 Class Notes, Exterior Angle Theorem Exploration, straight edge, protractor, homework problems PROCEDURES BODY OF THE LESSON Students will first take notes in the guided notes page that I give them as we discuss the concepts as a class. Students will be constantly questioned in order to gather understanding, and will be asked to recall what they already know: 20 minutes

Students will work at their table groups on the exterior angle theorem exploration. As they are working, teacher will walk around to each group to monitor work and check for understanding: 25 minutes As a whole group, we will discuss what we found, what was interesting/exciting, and talk about the formal Exterior Angle Theorem. Students will be encouraged to use what they learned to recall how to apply this theorem (not necessarily memorizing it word for word): 5 minutes Students will then be asked to work at their seats to solve the application of these theorems given the two problems on the board. Again, teacher will monitor student work and check for understanding: 10 minutes CLOSURE Students will be given their homework assignment via canvas Final thoughts: Why is it useful to test out and critique theorems we learn in class? How can we take what we have learned today and apply it to future situations? How can we remember special triangles and their uniqueness in the future? ACCOMODATIONS Students who need extra assistance will be helped by SATs. Students may use calculators if needed (since doing the calculations by hand doesnt add to the purpose of the lesson). Students who prefer to work alone may do so. Other accommodations will be provided as needed. ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION (MAY HAPPEN IN BODY/ PROCEDURES) Students will be assessed formally on their ability to complete the Exterior Angle Theorem Investigation and the two application problems we do afterwards. They will be assessed informally through conversations, questioning, participation in whole-class discussion, and attention to all steps being taken, and general monitoring throughout the process.
