If left unchecked, much of the speculative vision of the near future Atwood presents in Oryx and Crake is possible.

OR Oryx and Crake is actually a satirical vision of the contemporary world rather than a vision of a possible future. Genetic engineeringpossible, but not achievable to the extent of mixing animals, humans, etc. Recorded execution society/government would not record executions in the first place, let alone put them on the internet for people to find deathrowlive.com, brainfrizz.com, shortcircuit.com A biologically engineered disease that causes apocalyptic events which wipes out the human race except for Snowman. -immunization http://infotrac.galegroup.com/itw/infomark/539/701/22910312w16/purl=rc1_CLC_0_H1100109 831&dyn=3!xrn_15_0_H1100109831?sw_aep=fall83743 Helen Brown, for the Daily Telegraph, wrote "The bioengineered apocalypse she imagines is impeccably researched and sickeningly possible: a direct consequence of short-term science outstripping long-term responsibility. And just like the post-nuclear totalitarian vision of The Handmaid's Tale, this story is set in a society readers will recognise as only a few steps ahead of our own." If this society is attainable and so close to happening, then why hasnt it yet? Its not even close and its been 10 years since the novel was written. The Abominable Snowman--existing and not existing, flickering at the edges of blizzards, apelike man or manlike ape, stealthy, elusive, known only through rumours and through its backward-pointing footprints. Mountain tribes were said to have chased it down and killed it when they had the chance. They were said to have boiled it, roasted it, held special feasts; all the more exciting, he supposes, for bordering on cannibalism. satarical in a sense Speculative fiction is an umbrella term encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres, specifically science fiction, fantasy, horror fiction, weird fiction, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and alternate history in literature as well as related static, motion, and virtual arts.[1] http://listverse.com/2012/01/08/11-tech-and-science-breakthroughs-of-the-2000s/ http://oandcsynthesis.weebly.com/food--gmos.html GMOs are unnatural. We genetically modify food/crops in our world and in the world of Oryx and Crake. Therefore, in the long-run, crops/food lose more and more nutrients, which

becomes a major loss and defeats the purpose of those who are trying to get more nutrients by modifying crops/food/animals OrganInc, sounds like organic.I think its an intention naming on atwoods part becuase The name is ironic in itself for the the employees are paid to create organs, and modify them into organisms such as rakunks, pigoons, etc. These are obviously not organic in the slightest. However, literally the company name is OrganInc, meaning a corporation working with organs, so the argument can be made that they are doing what their name suggests. Companies like this in Oryx and Crake mirror the oppression of corporations in our world today. By displaying them in a negative and unethical light, Atwood is trying to show that this should not be desirable for our worlds coming future. Also, the idea of these GMOs is satirical because they are not for the good of society in the novel, rather they are meant to eventually take over and be part of the apocalyptic events in the making, which is why theyre satirical because no one in the real world/society would develop something to be part of the human extermination. A lot of these points are points we dont exactly need quotes for, which is why i didnt really look for any yet, theyre just points we can reference by referencing them aloud to the class, nothing major, it will also take away from our time to argue our point, what do you think? Where our printout/script should start: Speculative fiction is an umbrella term encompassing the more fantastical fiction genres, specifically science fiction, fantasy, horror fiction, weird fiction, supernatural fiction, superhero fiction, utopian and dystopian fiction, apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic fiction, and alternate history in literature as well as related static, motion, and virtual arts.[1] Thesis: The speculative vision portrayed in Atwoods Oryx and Crake is not possible in the near future, because the unethical use of technology and genetic engineering portrayed in the novel are just tools for satire about the contemporary world. quote1: need specific quote but nothing long, deathrowlive.com, brainfrizz.com, shortcircuit.commay be enough just as a reference analysis: Recorded execution the book allows Crake and Jimmy to watch these executions as a thrill, yet the idea that these executions would even be recorded and put up online although protected is beyond unethical. society/government would outside knowledge: In our society and government would not record executions in the first place, let alone put them on the internet for people to find, because it is so blatantly unethical and dark, which could also lead to more crazy murders and killings in our country quote 2: again if we want a quote just to reference it

analysis: A biologically engineered disease that causes apocalyptic events which wipes out the human race except for Snowman, who is basically immunized from everyone else who didnt survive outside knowledge: This is satirical because scientists of today yes are conducting genetic and biological engineering, but are not looking to find a disease to wipe out the human race, rather they are trying to cure cancer and other diseases. The apocalyptic events Crake undertakes are unrealistic because it seems that his entire project is funded and supported by the government and people, which is beyond unrealistic and unethical to an extent. quote 3: again, do we really need a quote? analysis should have enough info that qualifies as reference. analysis: OrganInc, sounds like organic.I think its an intention naming on atwoods part becuase The name is ironic in itself for the the employees are paid to create organs, and modify them into organisms such as rakunks, pigoons, etc. These are obviously not organic in the slightest.
