Brochure
Description:
Date:
March 29, 2014 A two sided folding brochure

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator.

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document. Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images. (Incorporate at least four quality images (Not including the logo). One should be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image.) Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three paragraphs.Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I set up my offset brochure layout in InDesign. I split the sections, making 4 in total. The over hanging edge would work for the finishing part of the cover.I used the brown that was found in the map on the front for the rest of the color scheme. For the image of the ring, I opened it up in Photoshop, and used the magic selection tool to grab the shape of the ring. I deleted the background once I was happy with the result and added it to my brochure on InDesign. Then I used text wrap to create a bubble around the ring that allowed the text to move around it. I placed it in the middle of the paragraph because I wanted to be able to have it be the center of attention .I created the logo of the thumb by finding a thumb that I felt would work, and tracing the outline, I then deleted the actual photo and touched my drawing up a bit adding Hitchhikers Guide inside and placed it on the cover. I used the pen tool and the text box in order to be able to create the desired logo. I was really happy with the outcome.

Montage
Description: Date:
This is a montage, which is made by blending two or more images together to make one, as well as the use of typography. February 15, 2014

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr Adobe Photoshop

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point and flow Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant message Learn to blend images together gradually, using masks. (Two or more images) Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills for layout with multiple elements. Use a mask to apply a filter to one part of the image (Copy the layer, then add the filter and mask it out on part of the image. If not an artistic filter, try sharpen > Unsharp mask, or Blur > Gaussian Blur.) Apply typography principles (titles, quotes, events or scriptures your choice) Format type: Legibility; Small copy & Title with varying text size. Theme word(s) Select good quality images. (Note background should be at least 16501275 pixels)

Process:

1. I made the background image big enough to fit clearly, and small enough to be able to use a border. 2. I had to use the Clone Stamp tool to get the word Sherlock off of the background. 3. I selected Sherlock and moved him over to the back ground image, created a mask and started to smooth away his hard edges at 100% opacity. 4. With a black paint, at 30% opacity, I blended Sherlock into the background so it looked like he was coming from the city. 5. I repeated the process with Molly, as well as falling Sherlock, I used the whole image for Molly and Falling Sherlock, and started to move everything until I was satisfied, then I started to blend until I was happy with the result. 6. Then I added a Script Text, turning the opacity down by 20%, taking a color from the scene to make it go with the color scheme.

I used the typewriter on the stationary as a water mark as well on the page as well as the back of the business card. On the card, I used the star tool to create the two triangles on the front, and I placed the typewriter on the back of the card to use as a reference to the stationary. I had to opacity at 20% on the typewriter on both of the pages.

Flier
Description: Black and white flyer used to inform graduating seniors about an up and coming leadership conference.

Date: January 24, 2014 Course/Instructor: Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Indesign Objectives: Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and logo from links on this page. Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign document to keep links intact.

Process: I created four sketches, and after that I asked

my roommates what would be more visually appealing to them if they were to see any in the school hall, their answer was consistent with mine. I then started to create my flyer in InDesign. I used different shapes to draw attention to people, and put the text in some of the shapes so people would be curious as to what they said, and want to come close and read more about it. I emphasized the word Graduate because I felt that was most important, after all this was a flyer for graduates who could come to a conference to gain leadership skills. I used the shapes to create a specific flow, by having them staggered around the page.

Logos
Description: Date:
February 22, 2014 Three Logos choices for a company

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr Adobe Illustrator

Program(s)/Tools: Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use your previous designs. Use only the tools to create and draw your logos. (No Illustrator pre-fab flares, symbols, etc.. No photos or auto live-tracing. You may use an image or drawing as a guide to trace it with the pen/pencil, but delete the image before submitting.) Gather opinions from at least ten outside sources about which logo appeals most to them.

Process:

It was difficult to figure out what to do at first, and then it came easy, I used the ellipse tool to create the donut shape, and used the eraser to carve out the middle of the donut. I would use some shading with the paintbrush to add a little bit of texture as well as the eraser to create the teeth marks. I used two circles to create the plate in the second logo design.

Webpage
Description:
A web page to describe a personally designed logo.

Date:March 15, 2014 Course/Instructor: Program(s)/Tools:

Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr TextWrangler and Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web

page so the long side is 300 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Include rationale for colors, appeal to target audience, design skills, etc,) Design a web page using HTML to display the logo and content. (Use TextWrangler (Macintosh) or NotePad++ (Windows)) Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Must include all required tags (Doctype (provided), html, head, title, meta charset (provided), & body. As well as tag that links to external style sheet. With in the body include h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, hr, and a (link to blog) tags.) Acquire a working knowledge of CSS. (Customize the Cascading Style Sheet (css) provided in I-Learn to add page formatting that complements the logo design, by changing at least the following: The h1 text color & background color, font colors for the paragraphs & list items, the background color, Font Families and add at least one css comment.Identify hex colors for web design. (Find and use hex colors in Photoshop to match your logo),Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.Open your HTML page in a web browser, and capture a quality screen shot with .5 inch margins for printing. (See tutorial below.) See the sample projects on this page as examples (contains 3 files: .css file; linked logo .png; .html file of web page.)

Process:

I designed this webpage in TextWrangler. Ive never had any experience with HTMLs or CSSs, so being able to work with them, and see if you could get your webpage validated was quite fun. I used the program TextWrangler to modify the code so I could place my information in the selected areas. I needed to get my logo onto the page, so I had to create a link that would connect it to the HTML document that I was working with, and seeing how that worked was interesting as well. After I had made my HTML, I had to connect it to my CSS. I then was able to add the colors from my logo and incorporate them into the web page, minus the red, with the help of the eyedropped tool in Photoshop. The text that I used was American Typewriter for the header at the top, as well as the header in the middle of the page, while I used Candara for the remaining text in the body of the page.

Photodesign
Description: Using Photography in order to convey a Date:
message and come up with a color scheme that was involved in the photo, as well as using photo editing skills. February 7, 2014

Course/Instructor: Program(s)/Tools:

Comm 130 Section 04 Cory Kerr Canon SX170 and Adobe Photoshop

Objectives: Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.) Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout. Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop Print with full-bleed margins. Trim only 1/8 (0.125) from all four sides.

Process: I first thought of things that I thought would be a

good color scheme, and I went around campus looking around for something that would go along with it, and I came across the image that I took on my way to the temple. I had decided on Split Complementary and this photo provided the colors that I was looking for perfectly. I took this photo with my Canon SX170 camera. I knew that I wanted it to have something to do with the temple, so I decided to make a poster about Baptisms for the Dead. I used the custom shape tool for the green and the water that is used in the photo. I was able to use the rectangle tool for the frame around the temple and also for the baptismal font. I used the anchor tool to create a rounded edge to the font. I used all of my colors for most of the objects in the project, but I decided last minute to use a feather and opacity on the water splash, and put a light green in the background, making that opaque as well. I used the line tool to create the columns that are on the font, as well as the top line on the font. I wanted to emphasize the idea of baptisms, which is why I made the splash, and I wanted to bring attention to that, so I caused the splash to work its way to the words Baptisms for the Dead and then I put a scripture referencing the work.
