Introduction

Chemicalequilibriumisanimportantphenomenonasitoccursinreversiblereactions.Onestudy lookedatanewmethodofequilibriumconstantandenthalpyofreactionofhydrogenbondformation. Thiscanhelpusunderstandpolymersfurther.1Anothergroupresearchedtheequilibrium thermodynamicsofmetaladsorptionontobacterialsurfaceswhichhelpsusunderstandbacterial surfaces.2Thethermalconductivityofamixtureofgasesinachemicalequilibriumisalsoimportant becauseitcanhelpestimateheattransferindifferentsystems.3 ThepurposeofthislabistouseBeerslawtomeasuretheequilibriumconcentrationofa complexion.WithBeerslaw,wecanfindthechangeandequilibriumconcentrationstoplugintothe Keqequationtogettheequilibriumconstantfortheformationofacertainreaction. Thereactioninthislabisasshownbelow: Fe3+(aq)+HSCN(aq)H+(aq)+FeSCN2+(aq) Chemicalequilibriaisaphenomenonwheretheconcentrationsofreactantsandproductschange untiltheyreachastablestate.Inotherwords,thereactionmoveslefttorightuntilitreachesapoint whereitseemstostabilize.Itisimportanttonotethatthereactionneverstopsandproductsand reactantsareconstantlycreated.Achemicalequilibriumisjustthepointwheretherateofchangeofthe forwardandbackwardsreactionsarethesame. Withachemicalequilibriumcomesanequilibriumconstant.Theequilibriumconstantisalways equaltotheproductoftheconcentrationoftheproductsovertheproductoftheconcentrationofthe reactants.Ageneralformisgivenbelow.Withthereaction:

Theinitialmolarconcentrationscanbeeasilycalculatedfromdilutioncalculations.Thisissimply donebycalculatingthenewmolesperliterfromknownstocksolutions.Fromtheinitialconcentrations ofFe3+andHCN,theequilibriumconcentrationsofallthereactantsandproductscanbecalculated.A tablebelowshowsthesetupofhowtocalculateeachsubstance INITIAL CHANGE EQUILIBRIUM X Z XZ Y Z YZ [H+]init +Z [H+]init+X 0 +Z Z
