Description: Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with original photo. Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: February 8, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: To make an appealing poster about the Ride of life. I wanted to incorporate an image that would help too convey the message so I chose to capture an image of a snowboarder. I chose a blue monochromatic color scheme to demonstrate my understanding of the color wheel. Process: I first chose a color scheme and decided on Monochromatic. I went and captured a quality image that I felt represented proper lead room with good light, sharp focus and nice composition. I used my Nikon D5300 DSLR camera. I then inserted the photo into Photoshop and used these specific editing techniques: levels, sharpness, and color balance. Then I design an 8.511 layout that including my photo, text, and repeating design elements. I then incorporated my color scheme title, and color name into my design. I used the eye dropper tool and adjusted the color to match a more accurately. I liked the lines I created using the square tool and matched colors that were in the picture to the different lines I used.

Brochure
Courtney Watson
Description: A two sided (duplex) folding brochure Programs Used: Adobe InDesign. Adobe Illustrator. Adobe Photoshop. Date: March 30, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: Inform my audience about The Spa. Through my brochure I am showing the many great amenities that the spa has to offer. Process: I set up my brochure in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into two sections with the concept that the one outer section would be shorter that the inside section of the brochure, that way when it was folded you could see the black that was showing through the second section. I used the shapes around the three pictures from the front throughout the brochure to create repetition and flow. I chose to outline the photos in white so they would contrast well with the background. To make my text wrap around my two images I used the text wrap option. I made sure to emphasize our four main goals at the The Spa by making each of the four goals bold and bigger than the other words that were used in the body copy. I created the logo in Illustrator using the pen tool and then I placed it into InDesign. I used the logo once on the front bottom-left side and again on the back of the brochure to show repetition.

Logos
Courtney Watson
Description: Three logo variations for the same company. Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: February 22, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: Inform my audience that Lisas Vegan Cafe is filled with delicious, high quality, unique dishes that are grown from local farms and organic suppliers. Process: It was a great experience creating a logo in Adobe Illustrator. I used the ellipse tool to create the basic shape of the flower that I used. I then used the up and down arrow keys to add and subtract triangles from the ellipse. After creating this shape I used the direct select tool to manipulate some of the curves. This gave the shape more of a flower look. I then used the pen tool to make the stem and leaves. I made the V of Vegan into the leaves to add creativity.

Montage

Description: An inspirational montage made by the blending of two or more images, and the use of typography. Programs Used: Adobe Photoshop Date: February 16, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: Advertise Doterra Essential Oils and respresnt the beautiful gift of the earth that they are. Process: In making this montage I first cropped the background image to 8.511. Next I selected the oil bottle and moved it into the background image, then I added a mask. With white paint and a 40% opacity, soft-edged brush, I painted away the hard image edges. With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 20% flow, I blended the hard image edges of the logo away into the background. I dragged the entire image to the background image and started masking it until there was a gradual blend. I used the white paint brush tool to blend the white in the logo so it ressembled a cloud and made the opacity of the paint brush 20%.

Programs Used: Adobe Illustrator Date: January 25, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: Reach recent graduates, who want to gain greater leadership skills, and inform them about how this leadership conference would help them to obtain greater leadership attributes. Process: I first created some sketches before working on the computer of my layout. Then I used the sketches I worked on as a guide to create this layout in Adobe InDesign. I used gray boxes with a black line to add contrast and repetition to my design. I also emphasized the word Leadership in white to show the main message I was trying to convey. I used a large picture that I felt represented leadership to help tie everything together. I left white space and kept my body copy small. I was given the image, logo, and content for this flier.

Website
Courtney Watson
Description: A web page designed to showcase a personally created logo. Programs Used: Text Wrangler. Adobe Photoshop Date: March 13, 2014 Course: Visual Media, Section 4 Instructor: Brother Kerr Objectives: To create a website for my company Lisas Vegan Caf as a resource for those interested in fresh made from scratch vegan food. Process: I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never written or used any HTML/ CSS. It was neat to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text editor. It was also very useful to use the http://www.W3.org HTML validator and the CSS validator. The validating cites were very useful and helped me make sure my code was correct. I first inserted my logo image and then attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used the same colors that I used for my logo in my web page. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Georgia. I used padding around the logo and text so that they would not be too close to the edge of the web page. Making sure everything was correct in my CSS code was probably the most challenging parts of working with CSS.

Process: I created the logo using Adobe Illustrator. I also used the shape tool to create the flowers that are used throughout the design. I positioned the placed logo in the top right corner of my letterhead. I then typed my contact information into a text box and positioned it on the right hand side of the letterhead. I made my name 10pt font to contrast with the 7pt contact information. I then pasted the flower that I made in InDesign and placed in so it ran off the page. I kept the opacity to about 9%. On my second page I copied/pasted the logo I used for the letter head and inserted into a new page in InDesign.
