Gabriel Scott Personal Statement Cancer is a disease that affects everyone, including physicians of all specialties.

Whether practicing in family medicine, heme-oncology, surgery or radiology, cancer is a diagnosis that physicians will often to have to make. Our advancement in therapeutics for neoplasms has been of great benefit to many patients suffering from this disease but there are still many others left without viable options. Cancer is the se cocond leading cause of death after heart disease and because of this, research towards new understandings of this pathology should be a top priority. As a future physician, my goal is to enter into a surgical oncology specialty. It is opportunities such as this summer research program, which will help develop the skills and traits necessary to continue being an academic in my field for the rest of my career. Ideally, by being able to be a part of the team at the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and USC Keck School of medicine programs during the summer, I would be gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to expand my skills for future use as an academic in the field of surgical oncology. Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and USC Keck School of medicine and its associated institutions are well-known for their strong academia and research merits and it would not only be an honor but also an extraordinarily beneficial experience to be trained under those with such strong expertise. In order to be a great physician later on it is important to build a really strong foundation now to support myself in the future. Being part of this research experience will not only strengthen my foundation but will also give me the tools to continue to grow as a health professional for the rest of my career. I have previous research experience and have always been an asset to the team. This not only comes from my strong motivation to find advancements in approaches to health care but also from my sheer dedication to finishing my goals. I like to approach problems that are tough because I enjoy finding ways to solve them. My main priority as a future physician will always be patient care, but research in itself is a form of patient care. I want to work on paving the way for progression towards better and safer patient care. I want to be able to look at specific pathologies that are hard to treat and help create a solution to these difficulties. Cancers, such as pancreatic cancer, which have very poor prognosis, are the types of pathologies I have in mind for my reasons to dedicate myself to this kind of research. I am currently only in my first year of medical school, but it has only strengthened my desire to work harder for my goals. For me, just being a part of the medical community has been a truly humbling experience. I come from a relatively small city, with very few members of my community going on to act as leaders in medicine. Being one of the few in this community that has been able to get the opportunity to enter this field has made me want to be the best physician I can be so that I can come back and serve as a leader to the city that raised me. After graduating medical school, I plan to do a residency in general surgery. During my residency I will continue to be an active participant in doing research. Following residency, I plan to enter into a surgical oncology fellowship. I then plan

to enter into an academic role to not only continue my research but also to help train future physicians with the skills and knowledge I will have gained during this time. I prefer being in an academic setting versus being a physician in private practice. I have talked to many of the academic physicians at my current institution and a large majority of them have made it clear that working in academia keeps you at the front lines of new expanding knowledge within medicine. One of the reasons I got into the field of medicine was due to the very fact that there will always be new things to learn. I have already worked hard to shine during medical school and make an impression on the faculty who I have encountered. I have worked hard to impress my research mentors and surpass expectations. These are commitments that I will continue to serve if given the chance to be a part of the Childrens Hospital Los Angeles and USC Keck School of medicine summer program. I will make myself a viable asset, and the benefits of this program will not only be received by me but also reciprocated back towards the overall research. I am certain this opportunity would be of great value to my future career and it would be treated with abundant determination out of the great respect I would have for being allowed to partake in this program.
