Article: A plan to keep the carbon in check Author: ROBERT H. SOCOLOW AND STEPHEN W.

PACALA Main Ideas: Climate change is making more stronger hurricanes and thinner polar bears We are releasing more CO2 every year faster and faster The amount of CO2 released has doubled since the industrial revolution The emissions of CO2 is still increasing It will be up to 14 billion tons of CO2 a year by 2056 The other chance of the future is that that amount of CO2 will decrease About 6 billion of the CO2 emitted will be from producing power Residential and commercial building use about 60% of the global electricity demand A plan is to bury the CO2 The high oil prices are slowing down the technology to be able to bury CO2 To capture all the CO2 we will need to build about 800 coal plants In 1952 the U.S. made up 39% of the carbon emissions In 2002 the U.S. made up 23% of the carbon emissions Nuclear power is one the most controversial wedges now Oil accounts for 43% of the global carbon emissions New ways of power must be created so that there is an increase in competitive options If emissions of natural gas increase the emissions of coal an oil must decrease It is harder to decrease the amount of CO2, and it will be easier for the future people to keep it that way Summary:

The amount of Coal released into the air is increasing faster and faster each year. The future holds two possibilities either the amount of CO2 will decrease or it will damage the environment dramatically. By using other technology for energy we can go to the good future. One wedge is two create carbon plants that trap the carbon and release it underground. Nuclear power is one alternate power source but it is very controversial because it cant be disposed. With nuclear power we can decrease the amount CO2 and then in the future it can be easier to keep it that way My Thoughts: I think that other sources should be used for power because most of the CO2 is used for power plants. With other power sources we lower the amount of CO2 emitted. Also with more options for power sources the cheaper it will be because they will have to compete with each other. So what? The future holds two possibilities and it depends on us which we will live in What If? If nuclear power is used how will the future be What does this remind me of? The movie we watched in class about the people in the future seeing how we lived Say who? ROBERT H. SOCOLOW AND STEPHEN W. PACALA
